Purdue University North Central College of Liberal Arts Department of Social Sciences Minor in Philosophy-Ethics-Religion 15 credit hours, 5 courses Academic Objectives Upon completion of the Philosophy-Ethics-Religion (PER) minor, students are expected to 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Understand the basics of philosophical, ethical, and theological reasoning, mainly in the western tradition. Gain a historical overview of key philosophers in the western tradition, divided by historical periods (ancient, medieval, and modern). Gain an overview of sub-areas in western philosophy like aesthetics, ethics, philosophy of religion, etc. Gain philosophical knowledge of eastern and western religions. Develop skills to work on their own research projects. Be prepared for graduate studies in the humanities (like Philosophy, Religion, History, and Literature). Be prepared for graduate studies in applied professional fields (like Law, Social Work, Business, and Medicine). Academic Requirements 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Students must take 15 credit hours minimum for this Minor, with no credit hours taken Pass/No Pass. Students will work with their academic advisor or a faculty member to develop a plan of study that includes courses at the 10000, 20000, 30000, and 40000 levels. Any deviations from this program of study must be approved in writing by a philosophy faculty member or the chair of the Social Sciences Department. Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in each philosophy course used to fulfill the Minor requirements. All appropriate prerequisites must be fulfilled before enrollment in Minor courses (see PNC catalog). Minor must be attached to a Major in any discipline and all Major requirements must be met as well. The 15 credits for this minor may be selected as follows. A.
