What exactly is Early College High School? Early College High Schools are small schools designed so that students can earn both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree or up to two years of credit toward a Bachelor’s degree. Early College High Schools have the potential to improve high school graduation rates and better prepare students for high-skill careers by engaging all students in a rigorous, college preparatory curriculum and compressing the number of years to a college degree. 2. Who pays for the textbooks for ECHS students? The CHISD and DISD absorb the costs for the textbooks. 3. As a professor, do I modify my instructional content or style for college courses? All of the college courses taken by ECHS students are taught by college faculty (adjunct and full-time). College instructors are expected to teach classes which have college level rigor to college students. The fact that ECHS students are also in high school should have no bearing on the instruction. The ECHS students met the same TSI criteria as any other student in class, and they should be treated exactly the same as any other student. Note: Any high school classes offered at CVC are taught by high school faculty. 4. Can ECHS students participate in student clubs and organizations? Yes. Most of our ECHS students are members of various clubs on campus. Many are members of Phi Theta Kappa. 5. Who would our faculty members contact in case of IT issues in ISD classrooms? Cedar Hill Collegiate: An administrator will facilitate their IT issues. In addition, each professor will be assigned a login and password. Gilliam Academy: Faculty can notify the main office and ISD will submit the issue to our campus Tech. 6. Would ISD campuses like for our faculty to take daily roll of students? Cedar Hill Collegiate: Yes, roll sheets are available in the receptionist office located in main hallway. These should be turned in the same location by the end of their scheduled classes. Gilliam Academy: Yes, that way we can ensure accountability for our scholars as well as communicate issues regarding attendance to parents. Cedar Valley College has implemented several strategies to assist students. It is the professional expectation of the faculty to emphasize the requirements to be successful in the course, include the drop date in the syllabus, review the consequences of dropping the course, and speak with the student prior to dropping the course. The date for withdrawal from a class is published in academic calendar. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the student to perform the following: 1. Regularly attend all classes in which he/she is enrolled 2. Consult with the instructor regarding any absences 3. Withdraw from the course by the appropriate date A drop/withdrawal prior to the published date will result in the student receiving a “W” (Withdraw) in each class dropped. Failure by a student to drop a class may result in receiving a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”. To withdraw/drop a course, an ECHS student must see their High School Counselor. A drop/withdrawal request by any means must be received in the Registrar’s Office by the official drop/withdrawal deadline. No drop or withdrawal requests are accepted by telephone. Incomplete/WX Contracts Incomplete contracts- With permission from the instructor, an “Incomplete” grade may be granted in case of an emergency such as serious illness, a death in the family, etc. The “I Contract” must be signed by the instructor and student; the work must be completed within 90 days of the first class of the next regular semester. WX contracts - The grade of “WX” may be given when a student has not completed a minimum amount of work to receive a computable grade for the course. When this grade is given, a student receiving a “WX” contract must register for this course within 90 days of the first day of class of the next regular semester. Failure to do so generally results in the conversion of the “WX” to “F.” Final Grade Submission ALL FALL GRADES MUST BE INPUT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND PRIOR TO 5:00 P.M. on the Monday following finals. Grading through eConnect opens three days prior to the close of the term and remains open three days after the close of the term. End of Semester Checkout List A complete End of Semester Checkout List form must be submitted to your corresponding Division Office. The checkout list must include the following: 1. Final Grade verification print out 2. Permanent Class List (eConnect Roster) 3. Incomplete and/or WX grade contracts (if applicable) 4. Copy of syllabus for next term eStudent Progress Report ECHS/CVC instructors who want to notify the ECHS office that an ECHS student is in academic peril can use the ECHS eStudent progress form. The e-version of the ECHS eStudent Progress Form is live and places on CVC’s Homepage under Early College High School. Once the ECHS office receives notification all information will be given the High School Counselor or High School Official. The High School will then be in charge of meeting with the student and taking corrective measures. All ECHS faculty (full/adjunct) are encouraged to use this e-form to report how well ECHS student are performing in their classes (on-site or off-site).
