Donald M. Darrach serves as
president and general counsel
to Royal Atlantic Developers,
a real estate development company
engaged in constructing high-rise
residential condominiums and
conversions in Florida. Earlier in
his career, he was a partner in the
law firm of Worley and Gautier in
Miami and subsequently founded
Darrach and Mark, P.A. Mr.
Darrach graduated from the
University of South Florida in
1967 with a B.A. in economics and
earned a J.D. from the University
of Florida School of Law in 1970.

Belissa Alvarez recently joined
Baptist Health Foundation as director
of development for Baptist Health
Breast Center. Prior to joining the
Foundation, Ms. Alvarez served as
the director of development for
Miami Children’s Museum, where
she was responsible for leading
fundraising efforts in close
partnership with the CEO, board of
directors and committees. She had oversight of the major
gifts program, corporate partnerships, grants, special
events and direct mail programs, as well as the museum’s
membership program.
Ms. Alvarez’s past professional experience includes
managing the fundraising, grants and scholarship
programs for Burger King Corporation’s philanthropic
arm, Burger King McLamore Foundation. She also
directly managed community relations initiatives for
Burger King Corporation, including partnerships with
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Red Cross, Habitat for
Humanity, Muscular Dystrophy Association and
Amigos for Kids.
She holds a B.A. in international relations from
Mount Holyoke College and earned an M.S. in mass
communications from Florida International University.
Ms. Alvarez has served as a leadership coach for the
mentoring organization Strong Women, Strong Girls and
volunteers at Posse Miami.

Hall of Dreams Gala and Celebrity Golf Tournament
Benefit Baptist Children’s Hospital
The Baptist Children’s Hospital Foundation Hall of
Dreams weekend kicked off February 7 with a Celebrity
Golf Tournament hosted by former Major League
Baseball players Jorge Posada and Mike Lowell. The
tournament was held at the Biltmore Hotel and each of
the foursomes included an MLB alumnus. PGA
champion Tom Weiskopf also was on the course
supporting Baptist Children’s Hospital.
The Celebrity Golf Tournament was chaired by
Carlos and Victoria Lowell in partnership with the Major
League Baseball Players Alumni Association and
sponsored by Sazón Goya, Pacifica Real Estate and UBS.
On February 8 the Hall of Dreams Gala welcomed
nearly 500 guests, 100 of whom were children. The Gala
was held at the Trump National Doral Resort and the
theme celebrated children of all ages. WPLG news
anchor Laurie Jennings was mistress of ceremonies. The
Hall of Dreams Gala was chaired by Gene Drody and
Lani Kahn Drody, Peter and Gina Gardner and Matthew
and Cristina Sullivan. The honorary chair was Sherry
Kranys, who generously donated $1 million to establish
the Sherry Kranys Children’s Innovation Fund. Gala
philanthropic chairs were John and Selene Devaney.
Major sponsors to the Hall of Dreams Gala were
BenTrust Financial, Bacardi, Sheridan Healthcare and
Ocean Bank. The Hall of Dreams weekend raised
$769,036. Proceeds will be used to support the
Honorary gala chair Sherry Kranys and family.

Baptist Children’s Hospital NICU
Baptist Children’s Hospital NICU provides patient- and family-centered care and has a capacity of 22 Level II
and 14 Level III neonatal intensive care beds. The unit provides around-the-clock care for babies with a wide
variety of medical problems. Having a Level III rating means that Baptist Children’s Hospital can care for very
sick newborns who need immediate surgery and those who weigh less than 1,000 grams (2.2 pounds). For

Country Club Reception
Founders Society members who also are members
of Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club enjoyed a
reception sponsored by NetJets and MorganStreet
Investments.
The April event was an opportunity to thank our
Founders for their ongoing support and generosity and
to recognize Sherry Kranys for her recent $1 million gift
to Baptist Children’s Hospital to establish the Sherry
Kranys Children’s Innovation Fund.
The grant, one of the largest gifts in Baptist
Children’s Hospital’s history, will support research,
programs and technology to improve patient outcomes
and transform the experience of children treated at the
hospital. Ms. Kranys established the fund in appreciation
of the high-quality care the hospital provided her
granddaughter, Kendall, when she was a patient at
Baptist Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit more than a decade ago. Ms. Kranys witnessed
firsthand the NICU team’s dedication and commitment
to medical excellence.
Guest speaker Barry T. Katzen, M.D., founder and
executive medical director of Miami Cardiac & Vascular
Institute, provided an update on the $100 million MCVI
expansion project and announced the systemwide
integration of Baptist Health heart and vascular services.
This integration reflects the power of Baptist Health’s
combined resources of experienced physicians and
leading-edge treatments and technology.

South Miami Hospital’s 54th Annual Mercury Ball
a Fundraising Success
South Miami Hospital’s 54th Annual Mercury Ball
raised $448,670 for the Child Development Center
Endowment. The Center provides diagnostic and early
intervention services to help babies born with
complications, as well as children who have or are at
risk for developmental delays and disabilities. Babies
admitted to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
are also offered follow-up care at the Center.
The March 1 black-tie affair, attended by 500 guests,
transformed the Grand Ballroom of the JW Marriott
Marquis into a “Cirque du Safari” atmosphere
resembling an African savannah, with circus-themed
entertainment. Music was provided by The Headliners.
The event was hosted by South Miami Hospital
Associates, community and business leaders who are
goodwill ambassadors and fundraisers for the hospital,
and the South Miami Hospital Foundation.
Former patient Ricky Zeichner expressed his gratitude
to the Center and its staff for helping him overcome
developmental challenges. Now a teenager, Ricky was
a patient of the Center since he was an infant.
Charles K. Miller chaired the ball, supported by
co-chairs Dorcas and Anthony Gonzalez, M.D. Individuals
honored during the evening included the Person of the

Pineapple Sauté & Sip
Benefits Baptist Health Breast Center
The seventh annual Pineapple Sauté & Sip
Interactive Dinner invited more than 600 guests on a
culinary tour de Paris, surrendering to the aromatic
scents from the patisseries and cafés along the Avenue
des Champs-Élysées. The gourmet gala, presented May 3
at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, raised $880,307 to
benefit Baptist Health Breast Center’s CareCoach and
Genetic Testing programs.
The list of celebrity chefs read like a Who’s Who of
the culinary world. Chefs Adrianne Calvo, Doreen
Colondres, Giuseppe “Beppe” Galazzi, Jeremy Goldberg,
Thomas Griese, Cindy Hutson, Martin Rodrigue and
Norman Van Aken were paired with Baptist Health’s
executive sous chefs, creating a delectable Parisian
cooking experience extraordinaire. Additional sous chefs
from Baptist Health Dining Services, Coral Gables High
School, Ferguson High School and the Miami Culinary
Institute were on hand to assist guests in whipping up
the night’s delicious courses.
Honorary chairs for the event were Betty Klinedinst,
in honor of Molly and Kit Klinedinst; Fred Newcomb
and Norma Ryder; and Ophelia and Juan Roca. The
evening’s philanthropic chairs were Olga and Pete
Pizarro. “We are extremely thankful for the support of
our honorary and philanthropic chairs,” said Patricia
Rosello, CEO of Baptist Outpatient Services, “and
especially grateful for the total commitment of Eris
Thomas, Sauté & Sip’s Host Committee chairwoman,
who helped elevate breast cancer awareness.”
“The Sauté and Sip raises funds for Baptist Health
Breast Center, which continues to provide exceptional
care to breast cancer patients. I am proud to make
an impact in the fight against breast cancer,” Ms.
Thomas said.

Doctors Hospital Ball
Raised Funds for Operating Room Renovation
More than 700 guests spiraled down the rabbit hole
into the Doctors Hospital Whimsical Wonderland Ball,
May 17 at Florida International University’s U.S.
Century Bank Arena. Distinguishing itself as the grand
finale to South Florida’s gala season, the ball ignited all
of the senses while raising $796,192 to benefit the
hospital’s Operating Room Renovation Project.
“We are grateful to our committee chairs and
volunteers for planning another event filled with our
signature elements of enchantment, excitement and
energy,” said Nelson Lazo, CEO of Doctors Hospital.
“Celebrating the magic of the city we live in and the
community we serve, the Whimsical Wonderland Ball set
the pace for our future by supporting the commitment
and dedication of our physicians and caregivers.”
Presented by Doctors Hospital Foundation and
organized by community volunteers, the ball was chaired
by Ilien and Keith Hechtman, M.D., with co-chairs
Patricia and Carlos Garcia, Esq., and Abby and Jose
Portuondo, M.D. These dynamic team members have
chaired the ball since its inception and continue to bring
their signature passion to this spectacular event.
Guests danced to the sound of the Drew T Band and
were entertained by a performance by Mobius 8, stilt
walkers; an interactive food wall; and interactions with
Alice in Wonderland characters including the Queen of
Hearts, the Mad Hatter and a Cheshire Cat aerialist.
The energy did not end at the Whimsical Wonderland
Ball; just when guests thought the night was over,
#AfterWonderland, sponsored by Mynt Lounge, kicked
into high gear, bringing young philanthropists from our
community together for the second part of the evening.

South Miami Hospital — Adolescent Bariatric Program
The Weight-loss Surgery Program offers a comprehensive approach to bariatric surgery for adolescents, including
psychological evaluation and counseling before and after surgery. Many teens who meet the health conditions are
precluded from the program because their families are underinsured or have no insurance. Under the leadership of Anthony
Gonzalez, M.D., the program will identify and underwrite the cost of the surgery and treatment for three to five adolescents with

‘Thank You’ to Very Special People
It was a quiet Monday evening when partygoers
filled the Green Turtle Inn in Islamorada for the annual
thank-you celebration hosted by Mariners Hospital
Foundation. The evening, sponsored by Buddy Wilton
and Shay Doll, was the hospital’s opportunity to thank
members of the Mariners Hospital Founders Society,
whose generosity has had a tremendous impact on the
hospital. By partnering with Mariners, through
donations of money and time, the Founders have helped
the hospital continue to provide the highest-quality
healthcare to the Upper Keys community.

Young Philanthropists of Baptist Health Enjoy a Musical Evening
It was a perfect evening for mingling and music
when the Pérez Art Museum Miami Contemporaries
invited the Young Philanthropists of Baptist Health
(YPBH) to the museum to enjoy a private reception
before the presentation of New York-based musical artist
Venus X. Guests spent the evening jamming to sweet
sounds while sipping beverages and enjoying the
ambiance of the evening.

Speediatrics, the Betty Jane France Children’s Emergency Center at Homestead Hospital, is a dedicated pediatric
unit founded by the chairwoman of the NASCAR Foundation. The Emergency Center sees nearly 30,000 children
per year and is the only one in south Miami-Dade County dedicated to pediatrics. It features a pediatric trauma
