Aldo Leopold Estancia Lago Strobel Rio Chico, Gobernador Gregores Province of Santa Cruz Patagonia, Argentina E stancia Lago Strobel lies in the center west of the Province of Santa Cruz, a vast property of 30,318 hectares (74,917 acres) which includes the shores of the Strobel Lake and the Barrancoso River, famed as much for the quality and quantity of their rainbow trout as for their difficulty of access. This is an outstanding investment opportunity for a recreational fishing lodge. THE PROPERTY W ith reportedly some of the best fly-fishing in the world in the unspoiled depths of the 11,000 hectare (27,182 acre) lake as well as in the Barrancoso River which flows into its waters and a hundred other smaller lagoons, the estancia also offers opportunities for year-round cattle farming and has a herd of 500 breed cows. The farm buildings include a cottage and farm sheds, as well as ideal sites for an airstrip. This would substantially facilitate access to the property which lies 130 km (80 miles) from the nearest town of Gobernador Gregores: the last 30 km (18 miles) by road are rough and stony, taking some three hours to cover. From Buenos Aires, it is a three-hour commercial flight to the nearest airport of El Calafate, 395 km (250 miles) due south. The climate is chilly and dry with an average yearly rainfall of 170 mm: winter temperatures hover around 0º C (32º F), and in summer range from 15º to 20º C (59º to 68º F), sometimes reaching 30º C (85º F). recreaTIONAL ATTRIBUTES T he exceptional fishing in pristine surroundings is undoubtedly one of the privileged features of the estancia, the perfect setting for a conservation fishing lodge run under the catch and release principle to preserve the sustainability of its trophy-sized trout while promoting the sport itself. In addition to the Strobel Lake, fed by the ice-melt Barrancoso River, there are great sporting opportunities for fishermen in the myriad chain of smaller and well-stocked lagoons which dot the otherwise arid landscape. The Andean-Patagonian Fishing Rules apply to all fishing activities, which must be carried out during the season spanning the summer-autumn months from November to April. Other outdoor pursuits include horse riding and hiking into the mountains or across the Patagonian steppes, as well as bird watching around the lakes and lagoons. CONSERVATION values T he prehistoric volcanic craters filled with snowmelt lakes of differing magnitude and the shrubby arid plateau landscape offer a highly varied environment for many different bird and wildlife species, including the protected macá tobiano, a diver bird with striking black and white plumage, indigenous to Strobel Lake. The area is also home to other rare species, such as the shy mountain wildcat, the Patagonian fox, pink flamingos, guanaco and the small South American ostrich, the ñandú. There are also the remains of a petrified forest nearby, as well as some prehistoric rock paintings which are estimated to be some 9,000 years old.
