thought leader in the science of service, John has presented hundreds of lectures and has consulted on designing customercentric organizations across a diverse range of industries.
Paul Ranky Ph.D
Quality Design Review Methods, Tools, and Case Studies
Paul G. Ranky, BS / MS (Hons) Mech. and Ind. Eng., MS (Eng. Edu.), PhD (Automation Eng. with IT He is a
Full Tenured Professor of Engineering Design, Manufacturing, Industrial and Management Systems at the
Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology),
with an additional faculty appointment with NJIT's IT (Information Technology Program), as Professor of IS &
IT. His core research and teaching interests are quality systems, sustainable design and automation engineering,
quality design reviews, and others. He is also an internationally known rescue diver.

executives and functions across the enterprise, creating value (along all elements of product, process and
capability), and developing high-performing teams.
Jeff Lee
Process Improvement: The Greatest Thing That Nobody Wants
With a desire to explore new grounds and serve his country, Jeff volunteered to deploy to Kuwait in 2010 and
became the Systems and Process Improvement Special Staff to the Commander during Operation Iraqi
Freedom. During the height of the US troop drawdown, Kuwait served as the hub for all equipment exiting Iraq
and equipment going to Afghanistan. Jeff successfully initiated, created, and implemented multiple process
improvement initiatives which enabled the processing of 3,500 armored vehicles per month through the Kuwait
hub. Operation Iraqi Freedom was formally recognized to be the largest logistical operation in the history of
mankind. As a result, Jeff received a commendation letter from the office of 3-star Lieutenant General
Pillsbury, the prestigious Superior Civilian Service Medal from 2-star Major General Fontaine, 8 performance
excellence coins, and multiple recognitions from the unit he served in.

Jeff Boatman is a Quality Systems Subject Matter Expert at QPharma, a regulatory and compliance consulting
firm in Morristown, N.J. With 25 years in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries, Mr. Boatman has
worked in virtually every aspect of life science engineering, from laboratory supervisor, manufacturing
engineer, R&D, and quality and compliance management. He is an ASQ Certified Quality Auditor and frequent
speaker at industry conferences and contributor to industry publications. Selected by PharmaVoice Magazine as
one of 2010's "100 most influential people" in the drug industry, Mr. Boatman graduated from Air University in
1981 with a degree in Nuclear Physics.
Richard Eng
Applying Machine Learning Techniques to Improve Quality
Richard F. Eng is the Associate Department Head of Applied Software Engineering at the MITRE Corporation.
He has over 20 years of industry experience in telecommunications and software systems. His areas of interest
are quantitative methods to improve business, IT processes, and software quality. Richard is an ASQ Certified
Software Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer, and Quality Engineer. He is a certified Projects in Controlled
Environments (PRINCE2) Practitioner and a PMP. Richard graduated from Georgetown University with an
MBA. He graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute with a M.S. in Bioengineering and B.S. in Chemistry.
Nicholas Ruffini and Thorsten Roberts
Reliability Modeling and Design for Reliability best practices
Nicholas Ruffini is a Reliability Engineer with the Armaments Research Development and Engineering Center
(ARDEC) at Picatinny Arsenal. He currently works in the Reliability Management Branch of the Science and
Technology Division, Quality Engineering and System Assurance Directorate. Since coming to Picatinny Arsenal in
2010, he has been focusing on exploitation of test, analysis, modeling and simulation, and other statistically
defensible or data-driven means to design in reliability to various armament systems.
Thorsten Roberts:
Thorsten Roberts is a statistician in the Statistical Methods and Analysis Group within the Armaments Research
Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) at Picatinny Arsenal. He is an ASQ CRE , received his B.E. from
Stevens institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering (’99) an M.S from the Naval Post-Graduate School in
Systems Engineering with a Reliability Concentration (’07) , and is currently pursuing an M.S. from New Jersey
Institute of Technology in Applied Statistics (’17). Since starting at Picatinny Arsenal in 2003, his work and
studies have led him in a natural progression from quality engineering, to reliability engineering, and finally to
applied statistics.
