What are the odds of being canonized as a saint? (1 in 20,000,000)
What are the odds of becoming an astronaut? (1 in 13,200,000)
The odds of winning an Olympic medal? (1 in 662,000)
The odds of being struck by lightning? (1 in 576,000)
The odds of dating a supermodel? (1 in 88,000)
The odds of scoring a 34 out of 36 on the ACT exam? (1 in 31,452)
The odds of a high school player becoming a professional athlete? (1 in 16,000)
The odds of becoming an exchange student in a foreign country? (1 in 4,329)
Thomas Edison’s mother home-schooled her son after his first teacher said that he did not have what it took to be a good student. Critics of the Wright Brothers warned: If
God wanted man to fly, he would have given them wings!
Odds may motivate us to work hard and accomplish our dreams, but odds may also be discouraging and convince us that we really do not have anything special to offer this world.
Jesus has some really exciting news for you, and it comes with unbeatable odds!
Jesus says: Y ou did not choose me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last (John 15:16). Jesus has chosen you to be his disciple, and he has a plan for you to carry out! A plan that will allow you to bear fruit; in other words, a plan that will allow you to show God’s love to others by your words and actions.
There are times when we may feel too ordinary to be of value to God. There are times that we may feel too average to make a difference in this world. But, according to
Jesus, God has a purpose for your life, a purpose that only you are qualified to accomplish. Jesus asks you to keep an open mind and an open heart; to spend time in prayer; and to ask and to listen, so that God’s plan may be revealed to you.
Remember: God has no phone, but you can still talk to Him at any time.
God has no Facebook, but you are always His friend.
God does not twitter, but you can still follow Him . . .
What are the odds that God has important work for you? According to Jesus, the odds are 1 in 1, and you cannot get better odds than that anywhere!
Grace and peace ~ Pastor Jim

We thank Gary Reitz for recycling our aluminum cans and other metals for the past
20 years. Over the past 10 years alone, he has collected $2,227 for our congregation, showing that each small gift adds up and makes a difference. Ron Andris has volunteered to continue the recycling program for our church! If you have aluminum or tin cans, please continue to put them into the recycling container located on the south side of our church building. Tin cans will stick to a magnet but aluminum cans will not. Please rinse tin cans and remove the paper from them, and place aluminum and tin cans in separate bags. For appliances or larger metal pieces, please contact Ron at (309) 475-6771 for pick-up. Thank you, Ron, and thank you to everyone who recycles!
The Gibson Area Food Pantry is asking our church, along with the Bible Church, to host the Mobile Food Pantry scheduled for this Saturday, June 6 . The Food Pantry is held in the red metal building across from the main entrance to the hospital. Entrance to the building is on the west side. We would like to have about 15 – 20 volunteers sign up to help. We will need a few to help unload the truck and set up at 8 am and the rest come at 8:30 am. The distribution runs until noon, but if you have to leave early that would be okay. Please park in the parking lot located on the southeast corner of
Hager Drive and Melvin. You will be given instructions when you arrive. If you have any questions please feel free to call Mike Bleich at (217) 781-4433 cell phone or
Gary Lutterbie at (217) 784-5647. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in
Parish Hall.
Would you like to have a little assistance with your yard work this summer? Such jobs as weeding, gutter cleaning or maybe putting your basement or garage in order?
Do you have something you want Ron Andris to haul away? There are volunteers from your church family who would like to help you! Please call Gerry in the church office
(784-4841) so that we can get a list and start scheduling!
Cleaning House? We will be holding a garage sale in Parish Hall this fall when
Gibson City has its City Wide Sales. Start saving those priceless treasurers for our garage sale!
If you would like to borrow tables from the church, please contact Gerry in the church office to check out the wooden tables that are stored in the northwest furnace room. Our church council has set the policy that the white tables in Parish Hall may not be removed from the building unless it is an official church event.
In order to save on expenses, our church council voted to print black & white bulletin covers on Sunday mornings, and only print colored bulletin covers on special occasions. This will save us 12 cents a bulletin. If you prefer to have your bulletin e-mailed to you so you can follow the worship service on your cell phone or iPad, please let Gerry know. She will e-mail it to you on Thursday morning. This will also save the cost of printing your bulletin.
Many of us give in to the myth that aging and memory loss go hand in hand. The reality is that memory does change as we age, but forgetfulness is common for people at all stages of life. It is important to note that memory can be strengthened. This workshop will cover how researchers are examining the memory process, how memory changes as people age, and some techniques and strategies for improving memory.
The warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease are often dismissed as normal age-related memory changes. Attend this program to learn the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s disease. We’ll separate myth from reality and address commonly-held misconceptions about Alzheimer’s. Hear from people who have the disease, find out how to recognize the warning signs in yourself and others, and learn why early detection matters.
Keeping your wits fit requires more than just doing crossword puzzles or word searches. There is increasing evidence that brain health is directly related to body health. This should come as no surprise since the brain and the body functions interdependently. However, most people think more about keeping their bodies fit or their hearts healthy than working at maintaining a healthy brain. By attending the FIT
WITS program, you can learn more about the aging brain and what you can do to keep your brain healthy and engaged.
Are you headstrong about keeping your head strong? Challenging the brain, especially as you grow older can be beneficial. Many of us enjoy working on puzzles and games that require us to think and stretch our minds. Come join us as we get together to learn about memory and aging and explore several exercise strategies to enhance thinking.

World Missions: Thank you to those who have contributed sheets, fabric, comforters, mattress pads, and used blankets for quilting materials that you may no longer need or have found at garage sales, auctions, and second-hand stores.
The quilters have completed over eighty quilts and we are just past the halfway point in our year. We are again reminded that warm quilts are desperately needed.
Personal care kits are also in short supply. We are hoping to send more of these as well as school kits this year. Though our shipping date is still months away, we would like to begin collecting for the kits. The following is a list of items needed for each kit. Please clip and keep for easy reference as you are shopping store sales, garage sales, etc. Some of the items like nail clippers, large tooth combs, rulers, pencil sharpeners, blunt-end scissors, and towels can be gently used rather than purchased new. God bless you for your efforts in this worthy cause.
School Kit
4 70-sheet spiral notebooks
Personal Care Kit
1 lt. or med. wt. bath towel
1 30 cm (12 in) ruler

5 ball point pens (no gel ink)
1 box of (16 or 24) crayons
2 bath sized bars of soap
1 adult sized toothbrush
1 sturdy (lg. toothed) comb
1 metal nail clipper

Call to Order: 6:35 pm. Devotion given by Pastor Jim – Galatians 2:11-13, 19-21 – working together as a congregation. It is important to invite people to church without making them feel guilty or overwhelm them. Our mission is to worship God and be thankful for our blessings. Paul instructs the Galatians to set aside their individual egos and work together as a congregation to serve God.

Treasurer’s Report: Balance of 3300.05, but will be -948.15 when payroll goes out on the 30 th . There has been a request that council minutes and the financial report be printed in the monthly newsletter. Council discussed and agreed to include the approved minutes and report in the newsletter. $2500 from Thrivent was put towards principle on the Building Fund.
Deacon’s Report: Outside church door locks will be changed on May 9 th . Jim, Darcy,
Jan and Pastor are planning to attend the Geographical Parish meeting on 5/3 at St.
John’s in Anchor.

• Community Resources – Food Pantry update: Our congregation will be asked to provide volunteers for a Saturday in the near future. Gary Lutterbie will get more information and let us know. • Prayer Team – 6 members meet every 2 nd and 4 th Thursdays to pray for our church and those on the Prayer List.
•
Stewardship – Pastor and Willy Stevenson are working on future stewardship events.
• Pastor’s Report: Council agreed to schedule a retreat at the parsonage on June
13 th from 9-11am. Cinnamon rolls will be available! Council also discussed scheduling monthly council meetings the 3 rd Wednesday of each month beginning at 6:30 pm.

Sunday, Pastor will ask for volunteers who are interested in continuing this ministry. Pastor requested permission to take vacation this July and in January
2016. We will be celebrating Rogation Sunday on May 3rd – Willy Stevenson will supervise as flowers are planted around our church building during Sunday
School. Adult Confirmation Class – will start May 16 th and meet every other weekend. Everyone is invited to attend the class.
Jim Spangler moves to accept reports, Darcy 2nds. All reports and pastor’s
vacation requests passed.
Old business
• Parish Nurse Job Description – Misti will look to see if OSF has a job description that we can use to develop our own.

• Lighting & Furnace upgrades – Gary will look into getting estimates. Look at places that use Carrier since that is what we currently have.
New Business

Next meeting is scheduled for May 20 th at 6:30pm.
We closed with The Lord’s Prayer.
Respectfully submitted, Misti Tompkins
