A few words from Cecilia Mclntosh, Dean of Graduate Studies ETSU graduate students come from many backgrounds and career stages and there are many reasons for choosing ETSU for their graduate education. Many of our students are looking to make career changes or looking for career advancement. Others enter graduate programs directly after obtaining their undergraduate degrees in order to qualify or establish additional credentials for their chosen careers. ETSU is in a fine position of being large enough to offer the great variety of excellent graduate programs often seen at much larger schools yet small enough to retain the personalized service typically seen at smaller universities. We offer a diverse choice of programs including master’s degrees and certificate programs in fields in business, education, humanities, science, technology, health sciences, and professional fields. We also offer doctoral programs in education, nursing, biomedical sciences, audiology, physical therapy, Cecilia McIntosh, Ph.D. public health, environmental health sciences, and clinical psychology. We offer over 20 different graduate degrees with over 50 majors or concentrations resulting in more than 90 different program choices. All programs are approved by the state of Tennessee and all that are eligible for accreditation by national accrediting agencies or boards are fully accredited. This booklet provides a summary of graduate programs offered at ETSU and will help you find the program that is right for you. Our web site (http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/) provides direct links to program sites and faculty listings. To apply, you can use the application in this booklet or apply directly online through our web site. The School of Graduate Studies offers a tour program specifically designed for graduate students. The tour program includes a general campus tour as well as a face-to-face meeting with the professor acting as program coordinator in the student’s program of interest and provides an opportunity for you to ask specific questions. If you are not already familiar with our campus, we invite you to contact us to schedule a tour - if you are familiar with our campus, we invite you to contact us and we can help set up an appointment for you to meet with the program coordinator. The Graduate School staff and I are eager to help you be successful. Academic support, career choices, flexible schedules, and over 50 years of delivering recognized graduate programs are the reasons you should choose ETSU. It’s all here—waiting for you! Sincerely, Cecilia Mclntosh, Ph.D. Students who are residents of one of seven counties in North Carolina, (Ashe, Avery, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Yancey, and Watauga), one of three counties in Virginia, (Lee, Scott, and Washington), or the city of Bristol, Virginia, can qualify for in-state tuition at ETSU. By completing a request for in-state tuition, and filing the form along with the residency information with us before the 14th day of classes, students from these counties can realize significant savings in their tuition. For graduate students taking a nine-hour load, the savings are substantial. You can find the form with the application materials at the back of this bulletin. 1 The Region ETSU is located in Johnson City, which, along with Kingsport, Tennessee and Bristol, Tennessee/ Virginia, is one of the three primary cities that comprise the Tri-Cities region of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. The Tri-Cities is a vibrant metropolitan area located in the Valley and Ridge, nestled up against the Unaka Mountain Range in the southern Appalachians. The area is noted for its natural beauty, cultural richness, and attractive living conditions. Named an All-America City Region in 1999, the area boasts such diverse attractions as two symphony orchestras, the International Storytelling Center, the nationally known ETSU Bluegrass Program, the nationally recognized James H. Quillen College of Medicine, ETSU’s Gray Fossil Site, the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, NASCAR racing at Bristol Motor Speedway, spectacular Tennessee Valley Authority lakes with their associated water sports, plentiful outdoor activities such as hiking – the Appalachian Trail passes through the area, whitewater rafting and kayaking, downhill and cross-country skiing, and a wealth of historical sites including Jonesborough, Tennessee’s oldest town. Tri-Cities residents enjoy services, shopping, theaters, and restaurants common to much larger metropolitan areas, (but without the traffic jams!). With a population of approximately 60,000 (in a Metropolitan Statistical Area of almost 500,000 people), Johnson City offers graduate students an affordable standard of living with safe streets and thriving neighborhood communities in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Location Johnson City is located a short drive from the state lines of North Carolina and Virginia, and just a little further from Kentucky, South Carolina and West Virginia. Situated just a couple of miles off interstate 26, and just a few more from Interstate 81, ETSU is easily accessible by automobile. TriCities Regional Airport, a full-service facility served by Allegiant Air, Delta Connection, Northwest Airlink, and US Airways Express, is about a 20-minute drive from campus. The University Founded in 1911, East Tennessee State University is one of the six state universities governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents. With more than 12,000 students, ETSU is large enough to offer many choices in programs and activities, but small enough to avoid the sometimes intimidating and impersonal atmosphere of a larger university. ETSU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Values “ETSU pursues its mission through a student-centered community of learning, reflecting high standards and promoting a balance of liberal arts and professional preparation based on core values where: People come first, are treated with dignity and respect, and are encouraged to achieve their full potential; Relationships are built on honesty, integrity, and trust; Diversity of people and thought is respected; Excellence is achieved through teamwork, leadership, creativity, and a strong work ethic; Efficiency is achieved through wise use of human and financial resources; and Commitment to intellectual achievement is embraced.” The Campus ETSU’s main campus consists of more than 70 buildings spread across 366 tree-shaded acres. The entire campus is part of the ETSU Arboretum, which received certification from the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council in 2002. The university is proud of its expansion and growth, which is complemented by Millennium Centre, a continuing education center and hotel complex, which houses the Niswonger Digital Media Center. The campus is rich with tradition, with several buildings dating to the early 1900s, but is also prepared for the 21st century, as evidenced by the Sherrod Library, which opened in 1999, the Basler Center for Physical Activity, which opened in 2002, and current and proposed construction that will further expand the university’s ability to serve the students, faculty, staff, and community. ETSU offers a beautiful, safe, and vibrant setting in which to pursue a graduate education. 2 http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/ The Graduate School The School of Graduate Studies has enjoyed more than 50 years of leadership in Tennessee and in the South, producing quality graduates who go on to serve their communities and employers as well-trained professionals. Since 1949, when the State Board of Education authorized East Tennessee State College to offer graduate instruction, the Graduate School has grown from one Master of Arts degree in education to over 50 majors or concentrations resulting in more than 90 different program choices across 10 schools and colleges. In the state of Tennessee, the number and variety of graduate offerings at ETSU rank only behind the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the University of Memphis. ETSU, along with Middle Tennessee State University, is the third-largest public graduate school in the state. Graduate Tuition* Because tuition and fee amounts are subject to change without notice, visit the Bursar’s Office web site for the most up-to-date information. http://www.etsu.edu/fa/fs/bursar *Students who are residents of one of seven counties in North Carolina (Ashe, Avery, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga, and Yancey) or three counties in Virginia (Lee, Scott, and Washington), plus the City of Bristol, Virginia, can qualify for in-state tuition at ETSU. Financial Aid In addition to the wide range of private and federal aid offerings, ETSU offers approximately 600 graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships. Graduate assistants are required to devote 20 hours weekly to performing duties in teaching, research, or administrative roles. Their stipends, which are set by individual programs, begin at $6,000 (for a nine-month contract), in addition to in-state and out-ofstate tuition remission. Tuition scholars have a 120-hour service obligation for full tuition remission, both in-state and out-of-state. In addition to departmental assignments, graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships are also available in non-academic departments across campus, such as University Housing, Sherrod Library, and various administrative offices. For information regarding all types of financial aid, visit http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/assistscholar.asp Computer Resources There are four campus microcomputer labs, both PC-based and Macintosh-based, which provide users access to the campus e-mail server, the Internet, and the library online catalog system. A large number of other departmental and dedicated labs, as well as multimedia classrooms, meet specialized needs of individual programs. The Sherrod Library provides study tables and carrels that are network accessible and has laptop computers for in-library use and four-hour checkout. Housing ETSU provides several options for on-campus housing, from traditional residence halls and efficiency apartments to Buccaneer Village Apartments, which offers one- and two-bedroom units for married couples and students with children, as well as graduate efficiencies. Buccaneer Ridge Apartments, a gated community with card access, features furnished, air conditioned, two- and fourbedroom and bath units. These apartments are furnished with washers and dryers, microwaves and telephone/TV cable/Internet accessibility, which is included in the rent (along with connection fees). For more information, visit the Housing Office at http://www.etsu.edu/students/housing/housing.htm. Child Care ETSU has three campus childcare programs; two programs serve children on a regular basis while parents attend classes or work; one program is located at the Center for Physical Activity and provides casual care while parents participate in activities there. The Child Study Center, located less than 1 mile from the main ETSU campus, provides full-day, full-year child care services. The operating hours for the facility are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Child Study Center serves children ages 3 months through 3 years in the Infant/Toddler Program and children 3 years through 5 years in the Early Learning Program. It follows the ETSU Administrative calendar. 3 Little Buccaneers Student Child Care Center is a student childcare program that is located on the first and second floors of Warf-Pickel Hall. Little Bucs serves only children of ETSU student-parents while they attend classes, fulfill class requirements, study, or work on campus. It follows the ETSU academic schedule and is closed when classes are not in session. Care is available on a first-come, first-served basis to all children between the ages of 3 months and 6 years of ETSU students. There is a fee for the services that depends on the number of hours of care needed and the age of the child. For complete information on these services, visit http://www.etsu.edu/students/acts/child_care_services.htm. Staff: Can We Help You?
