LOBBY saxena275 saxena275: good heard my son had easy time registering for his next semester LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): My name is Alison Spannaus and I am one of the Assistant Directors in New Student and Family Programs. On behalf of our office, I am so pleased that you could all join us tonight. We hope to be able to hear how things are going and talk a bit about preparing for next semester. LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY LOBBY judi19 kapgator LOBBY mmedina LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator adasignorelli@yahoo.com adasignorelli@yahoo.com familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): That's great to to hear saxena275! familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): How is registration and/or preparing to register going for everyone else's student? judi19: my daughter spoke to her advisor and is ready to register tomorow. kapgator: Will we have VoiP capabilities? mmedina: when my son asked his advisor about CLEPping Spanish, the advisor had not idea what CLEP was. familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): judi, that's great that your daughter was proactive in seeing her advisor. They are a wonderful resource to use to make sure students are on the right path. adasignorelli@yahoo.com: When is due date for spring registration? adasignorelli@yahoo.com: When is the final date for registration? saxena275: what is the procedure if one of the roommate leaves to go into an apartment for spring semester how do they put another student in a double room LOBBY saxena275 LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator mmedina LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY kapgator familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): I'd like to welcome Mickey Howard, the other Assistant Director here in New Student and Family Programs to our chat. kapgator: thank you, my son had to take one web core course this semester and was charged a web fee. I was under the impression that web fee was waived if the student is taking live classes as well? familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Hello All! I apologize for being late but I am excited to be with all of you and talk about what is happening now and what is on the horizon. familychatmoderator mmedina familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): mmedina, the CLEP policty is stated in the undergraduate handbook at https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/advising/info/CLEPexamination-credit-info.aspx. mmedina: thanks LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY LOBBY saxena275 adasignorelli@yahoo.com LOBBY adasignorelli@yahoo.com familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): kapgator, unfortuantely there are no VoiP capabilities, however we do post transcripts of the chat online after for those who were unable to join us. mmedina: Does anyone know what's UF policy on CLEP familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): mmedina, I'm sorry to hear that your daughter did not have the best experience familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): adasignorelli, your student has until the day before classes begin (January 9, 2012 for Spring term) to register. The specific date and time that they are allowed to register is based upon the number of credit hours that they have and varies. saxena275: Can my son request to move into a single as the room mate is planning to move out for spring semester adasignorelli@yahoo.com: The sooner the better! adasignorelli@yahoo.com: When should my daughter apply for a scholarship or any form of financial aid? LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): I'd like to welcome Lou Powers, one of the wonderful Academic Advisors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to our chat. familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Thanks, Alison. It's great to be chatting with you all this evening. LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Saxena275 your student can apply for a room change or preference at any point... however there is no gaurentee that they will be able to accomodate the request. I would suggest having him go into the Housing office or call the office at Phone: (352) 392-2161 for more information. LOBBY kapgator LOBBY LOBBY LisaSil adasignorelli@yahoo.com kapgator: What is the policy please on course web fees if student is taking live classes as well? LisaSil: I see the spring meal plan is due Friday...so soon. Is there a problem if I get the payment in a little later? adasignorelli@yahoo.com: Can the meal be paid by differ payment? LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): adasignorelli your daughter should be receiving more information about scholarships via an email in the next few weeks. Also I would suggest her visit the scholarship page for her to serach for what she may qualify for. Check it out here: http://www.uff.ufl.edu/scholarships/ familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): kapgator: If there is an extra fee for a course, it is generally listed in the schedule of courses so that a student is aware when they sign-up. Did you have a particular course in mind? familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): LisaSil and adasignorelli, you can defer the meal plan depending on financial aid packages. More information can be found at http://www.bsd.ufl.edu/dining/mealPlans.asp or by calling Gator Dining Services at (352) 3922491. LOBBY saxena275 saxena275: How will they replace a room mate that is leaving a double dorm room LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator saxena275 familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Saxena275 is it designated as a double? saxena275: yes kapgator kapgator: CHM 1025 stated had $25 CF for this semester. I was charged $50, I assume per credit. But my son had to also pay separately for the course as well. I thought I read on the UF website that that fee would be waived if student taking other courses same semester. He is thinking of taking another web course Spring HSC3102 I believe, and that states $120 CF. Is that per credit as well? thank u LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Then he can request a new roommate that would like to room with him that would like to switch (he can ask his Resident Assistant about this process) or he will have one assigned with him from someone on the waiting list or a student that will be joining us in the spring. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): saxena275: does that help? LOBBY LOBBY saxena275 mmedina LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator mmedina LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator saxena275 LOBBY familychatmoderator saxena275: little bit can he request to move to a single as the room mate is leaving mmedina: What is the web site with the transcripts of the chats? familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): mmedina, previous Family Chats can be found at http://www.dso.ufl.edu/nsfp/parents/familyonline/. mmedina: thanks familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Saxena275: he can request it but there is no guarantee that it will be accommodated. saxena275: Thanks Mickey familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): no problem, previous transcripts can be great to skim over as we often have wonderful campus partners, such as Lou, join us when the topic is relevant. LOBBY judi19 judi19: Lou , Can the student choose to take an online class even if she doesn't need to? I'd prefer that she not take one if she doesn't have to. She took the intro to Chem on line and found it very difficult because she had to teach it to herself. She didn't have a choice with that. She likes not having to get up early for a class if she doesn't need to! Are on line classes advised for Freshmen? What is your feeling about them? LOBBY gholl1 gholl1: Are you still allowng "opt out" on housing contracts to accommodate the waiting list? LOBBY LOBBY LisaSil LOBBY adasignorelli LisaSil: Does Bright Futures cover online classes? adasignorelli: What can you advise us to do in order for our kids to succeed this freshman year? wbandetuf wbandetuf: My son said he spoke with his macroecon professor about his grade and his warrington business adviser and the walk-in adviser. He was concerned because he got a D on the first exam a C on the second exam and the grade for the class is based on four exams. He was told that he might want to drop the class because when he figured out what he needed to get on the next two exams he needed a 100% to get a B in the class. Apparently you can't get a C in a universal tracking course. I spoke to other people I know and they said that doesn't sound right. My son then learned today that perhaps you have to have a C+ average in your universal tracking classes (all 8) but he still is unsure if that is the case. Can someone explain this to me? Also, can he LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): gholl1 it depends on what housing says I hate to defer the question I just want to make sure that you get the correct information. I would call over to housing tomorrow (352) 392-2161 for more information. familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): LisaSil, as long as it is a UF class, Bright Futures will cover onlnie classes. familychatmoderator LisaSil familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Sorry for the delay--I was trying to confirm the CF (additional course fee) for CHM 1025 (the $25 vs. the $78.71) but financial services is currentled closed. It is my understanding that the additional fees are for the web related materials regardless of whether a student is on campus taking other courses (or not). But I will need to confirm that with financial services tomorrow when that office is open. Feek free to email me directly tomorrow at lpowers@advising.ufl.edu. LisaSil: Thanks Alison. wbandetuf wbandetuf: Part of what I said was cut off. Can my son take CLEP for the macroecon class. I'm thinking with a little studying he can pass the CLEP and not have to waste his time taking this class again especially if it is going to be online with the same instructor. LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY kapgator LOBBY saxena275 kapgator: Thank you, Lou. Yes the fee for Spring has increased. My son was told by his ENT prof that he had to wait until he had 45 credits under his belt to declare a minor. Is this regulated differently per college? He wants to minor in ENTOMOLOGY and would like to continue taking those courses. Can he? saxena275: Are the grades for students posted on isis anywhere or its just given to the students familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): wbandtetuf: Students can get C's in tracking courses but it could make it more difficult to maintain the overall tracking GPA that they need. In otherwords, they would need to get higher grades in other tracking courses. But this is definitely something your student should talk with an advisor about before Monday (the last day to drop classes) so that they can help them make the best decision with the information they have from the professor as it relates to their particular major. familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): adasignorelli - I think the best thing that you can do is to really balance challenge and support. These students need your help to succeed, I think that you can be there for them and support them in their difficult questions or sticky situations. But on the other side of the same coin you need to challenge them and tell them to figure it out once and awhile. The point of college is to prepare them for the real world. By balancing those times of advice and challenge it will help them grow. To much of either and it can frustrate your or frustrate them. Balance of the two is key. (let me know if that doesn't make sense). LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): kapgator: Yes, the university policy is that students must have at least 45 hours before they can officially declare a minor. But they can go ahead and start taking the courses for the minor they intend to declare before 45. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Saxena275 actually the grades are only available on ISIS on the students screen. But students are welcome to share their access as they choose or see fit. gholl1 gholl1: My son is a finance major. He has 5 yrs of Spanish from high school and is considering it as a minor @ UF. Does he have to apply to the Liberal Arts program to do this? LOBBY LOBBY adasignorelli adasignorelli: Thanks so much Mickey! It makes perfect sense! LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Grades will be posted on ISIS on December 21. wbandetuf wbandetuf: Thanks Lou. My son already dropped the class. Since his professor said that the grade for the class would be dependent upon the 4 exams and nothing else he felt that there was no way he could get a 100% on both exams. Also, when he spoke to the walk-in adviser that person told him (my son) that he would be off track and that he would need to take 3 tracking courses in the spring to be back on track. My son wanted to take only two tracking courses and then take microecon (a tracking course for business majors) at our community college over the summer but the adviser said he would then have to pick a different major. When my boss and I looked up this information online we found that not to be the case. So, it's confusing as to what is supposed to happen LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY LOBBY saxena275 wbandetuf familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): adasignorelli, I would also suggest encouraging your son to step out of him comfort zone and try new experiences. One of the most wonderful parts of attending a school the size of UF is the opportunities it provides. I find that often students don't push themselves to try new things and that is where some of the best growth opportunities can occur. Also, just being there for your student for when they want to talk is one of the best things you can do. While students may not realize it now, having parents who are there for them when needed is one of the key things that a parent can do. saxena275: Thanks Mickey do the parents and students have different Isis screen ( sorry i am asking maybe too simple questions) as i can go to isis but i do not know which tab has their grades wbandetuf: My son is supposed to register for classes tomorrow. familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): saxena275 there is no different screen and they only post final grades on ISIS the other tracking grade information is on a different system. LOBBY LOBBY wbandetuf wbandetuf: Saxena 275 - There are different logins for students and parents. Your student has to permit you to see his/her screen. I have seen both screens and the info is the same. LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator adasignorelli adasignorelli LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY kapgator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): wbandetuf: It sounds like your son made a good decision since it did not appear realistic that he could get the grade he needed to be on-track for his business major. I am not a business advisor but I do know that the tracking GPA for that college is very high (3.0) so it would have made it very difficult for him to get back on-track if he had gotten even a C. adasignorelli: Thanks Alison!! adasignorelli: Is there a special code for parents to see the grades in ISIS? familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): wbandetuf, the best thing for your student to do is to view the Undergraduate Catalog, which states tracking information for each major. The Undergraduate Catalog can be viewed at https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/Pages/academic-programs.aspx. kapgator: CALS requires a 3.7, I believe, to apply for the Honors college. Those students who are currently being audited achieve that GPA or above able to apply to Honors college or do they have to be invited? wbandetuf wbandetuf: Moderators, I have been on family chat several times now and I even looked up last year's info as I was curious to see what parents and moderators had to say last year. So far, I've come to the conclusion that Calculus, chemistry and engineering classes are extremely difficult and most moderators say it has to do with the student not being able to synthesize or conceptualize but nowhere does anyone seem to think that it has anything to do with the fact that the teacher is not getting the info across to the students. Why is that? LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): adasignorelli the only code that we know that exists is if your student provided their log-in information. The other screen that is being referred to is the parental log-in for payment and financial information. familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): kapgator: Each college at UF has different honors criteria. This link describes the various college criteria: LOBBY adasignorelli adasignorelli: Thanks so much. LOBBY kapgator LOBBY gholl1 LOBBY saxena275 LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatadministrator kapgator kapgator: FYI....ALL GRADES ARE POSTED ON SAKAI...get your child to give you the log in gholl1: Sorry for the repeat, but I think my question got lost......My son is a finance major. He has 5 yrs of Spanish from high school and is considering it as a minor @ UF. Does he have to apply to the Liberal Arts program to do this? saxena275: Thanks Mickey and Wbandetuf, so we can only see the final grade that will be posted in Dec. and to see the other tracking grade info my son will have to give the info to me, Is that correct? familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): sorry: honors link: https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/Pages/graduating-with-honors.aspx familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): saxena275 that is correct kapgator: thank you Lou wbandetuf wbandetuf: Case in point, my son told me that his calculus professor told the students that he had received a lot of emails because a certain assignment was due and the professor had not covered the material yet. Apparently the professor did not realize this but only realized it after receiving so many emails. My son said there were a ton of students at the broward tutoring center trying to figure out the problems that were not explained in class. Thankfully, the teacher extended the deadline when he realized he had not covered the material. familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): gholl1: Yes, the Spanish minor is offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. So he can apply for the minor once he has at least 45 hours but he can remain in the College of Business. Meanwhile, he can go ahead and start taking Spanish classes. With that much background in Spanish, he should definitely talk with an advisor about the proper placement. Lorrie Lorrie: My son is in engineering and having trouble with Calc 2 even though he is getting tutoring help. He is taking 12 hours of credit. If he realizes he is not going to get at least a C in a tracking course and chooses to drop it how will that affect his scholarships since he does not have the 12 hours required to maintain the scholarshop? LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): wbandetuf I understand that sometimes there may seem like there is some disconnect between the professor and students. I think that your point echoes the point home that the professor did alter his initial plan. But I also would say that your student can always go to the college that the course resides in and let them know about the issues that may be creating some disconnect. karendaunn: Wbandetuf, I agree with you regarding the Chemistry and Calculus classes. My daughter is really struggling with both classes. I purchased the "study edge" tutoring sessions, and she still finds the class difficult. debbihartman: who should my daughter speak with about her course track. I spoke to her today and she seems overwhelmed LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY karendaunn LOBBY debbihartman LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator debbihartman LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator Lorrie familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): debbiehartman what is your daughters major? debbihartman: pharmacy but that may change as she seems confused now familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Lorrie: which scholarship are you referring to bright futures? familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Lorrie: The affect of dropping a course on a student's scholarship depends on the scholarship. It is best that students speak directly with a financial aid counselor before Monday (Nov. 21) since that is the last day to drop. They can then take that information into consideration. Lorrie: Thanks, Lou, I will have him do that. wbandetuf wbandetuf: I've spoken to a lot of my son's friends who are various majors (engineering, science [they have chemistry and physics], etc) and they all say the same thing: they study like crazy but when it comes to the exam the material they study is not on the exam; it's something completely different. Why is that? I read a comment one parent posted last year who asked the same question and the moderator said perhaps the student didnt' read the text. One of the classes my son has the professor told him you don't have to read the textbook and it's a really expensive textbook but when my son took the test he got a C (different class than macroecon) and there was material on the exam that wasn't covered in the web assignments, notes, or homework. How are our students suppose LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Lorrie: do you mean Pre-Pharmacy? LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY Nina_A LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator debbihartman LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY LOBBY Lorrie debbihartman LOBBY bittare1 familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Here is the contact information for the PrePharmacy adviser Wanda Washington (pre-pharmacy majors)G205 Health Professions, Nursing, and Pharmacy Building (HPNP)(352) 273-6400E-mail: wanda@ufl.edu Nina_A: My son is having difficulty in finding a ride home for Thanksgiving, either Tuesday or Wednesday. We live in North Port FL. He is looking to get a ride anywhere south of Gainesville, ie Tampa, Sarasota, etc wbandetuf: I got cut off again. How are our students suppose to excel when these things happen? familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Bright Futures does require that students repay the amount BF paid whenever a student drops a course. But that is really the only negative consequence for that particular scholarship. debbihartman: yes I did mean pre-pharmacy familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): debbiehartman: I just posted the Pre-Pharmacy adviser information so that you can provide that with your daughter to set up a meeting to discuss the issue further Lorrie: Also, he has told me that even if he does understand what is covered in his calc class, the quizzes are prepared by a TA that uses material that has not been covered in class. Therefore, he is not getting the grades he might have gotten if the quizzes covered the material that was covered in class. debbihartman: Thanks I saw it. bittare1: My (freshman) son is actually doing VERY WELL in Calc & Chemistry & all of his classes in general. Will he have to APPLY for honors classes & housing next year, or can he just "sign up?" wbandetuf Nina_A Nina_A wbandetuf: Nina _A - My son is coming home to Tampa on Tuesday. What residence hall does your son live in? Mine is in Jennings. I'm not sure who else my son may be bringing home. My email is wbandet@tampabay.rr.com Email me later. Nina_A: wbandetuf Thank You. my e-mail is nia025@comcast.net Nina_A: wbandetuf. My son is in Springs LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator saxena275 bittare1 familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): wbandetuf: to the issue regarding the C that is an average grade, and he may be use to to excelling very easily in previous classes and is just adjusting to the rigor. As he had a second test in that course and seen any improvement? saxena275: Congratulations bittare1 whats his secret bittare1: He HATES the party atmosphere (really having a tough time socially!) familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): wbandetuf: I appreciate your concern about the difficulty of some classes here at UF. Many of the students I talk with who are having troubling in courses like chemistry, calculus and physics realize that they need to devote more time to these types of classes and they did not do that early enough in the semester (and courses such as these are very cummulative. We do have great tutoring services here at UF through the teaching center www.teachingcenter.ufl.edu so I would definitely recommend they try that. LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY familychatadministrator wbandetuf: Please note that I looked up all the Bright Futures info when my son told me that he was planning to drop one class and therefore going from 14 credits to 10 credits. Per Bright Futures you have to have 24 credit hours in the school year which I interpret to mean Fall and Spring. So I told my son he will have to take a minimum of 14 credit hours so as not to lose Bright Futures. I've heard of several people losing their bright futures. wbandetuf: He has to take 14 credit hours in the Spring so that with the 10 credit hours he now has he will have the 24 credit hours total he needs. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bittare1: he will have to apply for both the honors program and honors residence hall. Give me one second and I can grab the information that your son will need. familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Maybe this will help with BF questions: If you are a Florida Bright Futures recipient, you should definitely check out SFA¿s handy renewal predictor tool. To determine the 2012-2013 renewal criteria for your specific Bright Futures program, simply input your Bright Futures scholarship program, your fall and spring hours for 2011-12, and the predictor does the rest. More information: <A href="http://www.sfa.ufl.e LOBBY LOBBY bittare1 LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY familychatadministrator bittare1: Thank you Mickey. Can you also tell me how he might be able to EARN $$ for tutoring in those areas? (He needs a job!) familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Bright Futures continued: http://www.sfa.ufl.edu/programs/bright-futures/renewal familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bittare1: Honors College application for lateral admission: http://www.honors.ufl.edu/Lateral.aspx and housing is dependent on his acceptance into the program. wbandetuf: Thanks Lou. My son did go to a couple of the tutoring places. One had too many students waiting in line. One had a TA that barely spoke English and seemed confused about the material my son was trying to learn. My son decided to get help from Tutoring Zone which helped him with his calculus and helped partially with his macroecon (he got a C which was an improvement over the D he got on the 1st exam). familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Bittare1: Tutoring positions application https://teachingcenter.ufl.edu/_forms/employment-tutor.html wbandetuf: He got a B on his calculus exam. The other exams I mentioned were his macroecon. LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator bittare1 LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): wbandetuf: Yes, some of the tutoring offices get very busy this time of the semester. But I'm glad Tutoring Zone helped. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Have we missed any questions, we want to make sure that we caught everything bittare1: How can my student earn $$ for tutoring? familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): You guys have been asking great questions! Sorry if we missed something. joseealvarez joseealvarez: Question. My son is a freshman but he came in with 54 credits. His declared major is History but he wants to double major in Political Science or the new International Relations major (probably the latter). He tried to take an INR class and he couldn't, we assume that it was because of his History major. How can he get that INR class? LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY joseealvarez familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bittare1 I thought I sent it but here is the link to the job application: https://teachingcenter.ufl.edu/_forms/employment-tutor.html wbandetuf: Getting back to my original question. Can my son take the CLEP for Macroecon once he has reviewed all his info? I noticed from the CLEP website that UF has a center where this exam can be taken. Can he take the CLEP Jan 6 for example or are there set dates for CLEP like there is for the SAT? joseealvarez: He tried to declare double major but he was told that he needed 45 credits in UF to do that. karendaunn karendaunn: I certainly understand that some students may not devote the necessary time, but that is not always the case. My daughter graduated from an IB program and is used to rigorous and challenging work. She may not be a genius, but she is quite smart. She goes to tutoring and studies quite hard. Like the other participants have stated, she has shared that she will study for hours, attend the exam review sessions, yet when she goes to take the test, its not what they expected. familychatmoderator mmedina familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): joseealvarez: Some departments do restrict their upper level courses for students in their majors during advance registration to be sure the majors have gotten in them first. But most lift that restriction next week on November 21 so he might try again then for the upper level INR course. mmedina: I'm also interested in wbandetuf's question regarding CLEP. familychatmoderator judi19 karendaunn familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): joseelavarez: Students can't officially declare double majors until they meet certain criteria such as tracking term 5 requirements for both majors. But they can start taking the courses for both as early as their first semester. judi19: What's you opinion about online classes? karendaunn: Is Tutoring Zone a private tutoring company? LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY bittare1 LOBBY Nina_A LOBBY joseealvarez wbandetuf: karendaqunn - I concur with you and what your daughter says. My son graduated from the IB program too and is used to studying hard (not just memorizing since the IB program does not promote memorization). He graduated in the top 5-10% of his class yet he is having difficulty at UF. He clearly needs to be taught and I just wonder how much "teaching" is actually going on especially when it comes to these online courses. bittare1: When do our students schedule/choose their spring semester classes; does it REQUIRE an academic advisor's guidance? Nina_A: My son is having a hard time with online chemistry as he has never taken an online class before. joseealvarez: I see. Is there a document with the official requirements to declare double major (say Political Science on top of History in this case)? familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): karendaunn: I get to work with our students everyday and if your daughter is like many others she is probably very intelligent. I think the biggest thing is just learning the way the test will be administered. Taking a test or preparing for a test is like preparing for a strategy game: they way the test will be formatted, what material will be covered, and most of all the style and approach of the professor himself. I know that sounds odd but it works. Question though has she gone to office hours to talk to the professor? LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY LOBBY wbandetuf familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): CLEP questions: CLEP exams have to be taken by the end of a student's first semester at UF (fall not summer) so the January exam would most likely be too late. I would first suggest that your student talk with an advisor to be sure the CLEP credit they might potentially earn would be beneficial for their major since CLEP exams are not free. And, if so, then have them check with the Admissions Office to see if they would still accept a January exam. wbandetuf: Nina_A - I concur that online courses are extremely difficult especially if you have never taken one and my son has two online courses. One he is getting an A and the other he had to drop. Thankfully the one class involves assignments and other things and not just exams only. familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Tutoring Zone is a private company. LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator judi19 LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY wbandetuf familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): judi19 - speaking with many students the opinion of online classes varies. There are some misconceptions about online classes. They are just as difficult and require a lot of self-motivation. Your student will have to schedule "class time;" which is also the beauty that it is really felxible. If they are thinking about it make sure they read the syllabus carefully and plan out accordingly. Does that help? judi19: yes thank you! familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Double Major application form: http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/forms.html wbandetuf: The CLEP is only $77 which is far cheaper than re-taking the Macroecon at a community college or UF. I'm seeing my son this Friday and plan to discuss CLEP with him in detail. Thanks Lou! Nina_A Nina_A: I know my son missed one assignment in online chemistry due to discrepancy in dates given by the professor and the course itself, and he was told it's not going to count. He wasn't the only one. Apparently there were a lot of other students that missed it. LOBBY Lorrie: My son too is used to a rigorous course of study as he was salutatorian of his class, but when he is tested on material that was not covered it is impossible to maintain the grades he needs. I am going to make sure he contacts his professor about this as it is very frustrating for me as a parent to hear his concerns and know that it is not just him as other parents are conveying the same concern. familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Nina_A: Students should definitely talk with the chemistry department if they feel there is some discrepancy. Nina_A: Thank you Lou LOBBY Lorrie LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator Nina_A LOBBY adasignorelli LOBBY familychatadministrator adasignorelli: My daughter is still undecided as what to study ... how can I help her? familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Lorrie: we always suggest going to the professor or one of the TAs to discuss the discrepancy if they are not letting the people in charge know nothing will ever get resolved or fixed. LOBBY kapgator kapgator: May I ask which CHM course everybody is referring to and the professors name???? LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY wbandetuf wbandetuf wbandetuf: Sadly, students are afraid of repercussions for "telling" on their teacher. My son also mentioned that he missed the one opportunity for extra credit in his macroecon class because it was listed the first week and due the next week and he had not even signed on to figure out how to do his online class. KAPGATOR- All the chemistry classes are difficult. Thankfully my son is taking chem but his good friends are. One is a freshman and one is a sophomore. wbandetuf: My son is NOT taking chemistry (sorry). familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): adasignorelli: she may be unsure of what she wants to do or what her talents are. Of course she can always go to one of the advisers over at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences/ Academic Achievement Center. You can also have her visit the Career Resource Center which has personally and occupation tests. But just be a listening ear and look for buzz words such as "I like this" or I am good at this" and encourage her to pursue those passions/ what she is good at. I hope that helps. LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY Lorrie LOBBY saxena275 LOBBY bittare1 familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): adasignorelli: We have one of the highest ranked Career Resource Center in the country so I would definitely tell your student to start there. They have great resources to help exploratory studetns. They also have a lot of on-line services if students prefer to do self-assessments on-line: www.crc.ufl.edu familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Lou and I were on the same page and they were actually just rated number 1. Lorrie: Thanks, Mickey, I will make sure he follows through with contacting the professor or TA. saxena275: what i feel is during school the students get lot of spoon feeding from teachers and being home it helps them to have the comfort and in college all of this gets taken away and they have to mature so the first semester is going to be tough for lot of the students but they will get to grow and figure out. bittare1: When/how do our students schedule/choose their spring semester classes; does it REQUIRE an academic advisor's guidance? LOBBY Nina_A LOBBY familychatmoderator Nina_A: saxena275 - My son made this comment that they are being babied in high school and not prepared for college. He is very frustrated. familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): bittare1: Advance registration for Spring is going on now. Most colleges/majors do not require that students see an advisor every semester (the exception is Engineering) but I think it is always a good idea for them to meet with an advisor prior to their appt. LOBBY adasignorelli adasignorelli: My daughter has benefit from the Career Center very much. Thanks Lou. LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY LOBBY bittare1 adasignorelli wbandetuf: adasignorelli - I can email you a link which I emailed my son last week. It's a 3 hour survey he said (questions and you have to provide answers) and helps identify your child's strengths and what might be a good career choice. It is thru the UF Career Counseling center. My email is wbandet@tampabay.rr.com Email me later. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Nina_A and All: I think the biggest difference between high school and college is that the resources seek the students and in college the students have to seek the resources. bittare1: Appt? Is it up to the student to schedule an appointment? With who? (He is a Physics major) adasignorelli: Thanks so much wbandetuf! familychatmoderator Nina_A familychatmoderator(UF NSFP Alison): Unfortunately, I have to exit, but it has been wonderful chatting with all of you this evening. Enjoy the rest of your conversation! Nina_A: Mickey, yes, I agree with you. saxena275 saxena275: once enrolled for spring semester , can they add or drop classes before the semester begins or they do during add and drop period which is the first week of classes wbandetuf wbandetuf: Moderators, does anyone from the UF administration sit in on professor's classes or checks with students while they are currently taking the class to see how the professor is doing? I know the students can grade the teachers after the fact (after they have dropped the class or finished the class). However, is there anyway of finding out how professors are doing while the class is in session? e.g. late Oct/mid Nov LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): bittare1: Students are assigned a registration appointment date/time. They will find it on isis under registration prep if they are not sure. LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): wbandetuf: what kind of checks do you mean? LOBBY bittare1 LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY adasignorelli LOBBY bittare1 bittare1: Thank you Lou (my son is very smart, but not always "on top of things!") wbandetuf: Does the Dept Chair sit in on the class to see if the professor is explaining to students the material that is to be covered? familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): wbandetuf: Students are given an opportunity to evaluate professors at the end of each semester. Evaluations from prior semesters are available online so that students certainly have access to that info before signing up for classes. I'm sure if a department heard there was a problem with a particular class, they would send someone in to observe. wbandetuf: I know we had a math teacher at my son's school that many parents and students complained about because she was not "TEACHING" the students. It took 2 years before the teacher was moved to a different area (other than the upper division math class she was asked to teach). I know she also 'TAUGHT' lower division math and apparently had a difficult time doing that. adasignorelli: Thanks so much for these great chats as usual!! God bless you all! Until next time!! bittare1: If my son wants to room in Beaty Hall (with the same roommate) again next fall, when does he APPLY? LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY joseealvarez familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): wbandetuf: Our professors and faculty are pretty autonomous when it comes to their courses. That may have worked in a high school setting but the rules that govern college are very different. joseealvarez: Where can they see past teacher evaluations? We have used the popular ratemyprofessors.com but it would be great to have an official one. wbandetuf: The exception to that is when the teacher is not listed for the class which was the case for Macroecon. Also, it's my understanding that this teacher is new at teaching this class. I'm not sure what he taught before but the long time professor that used to teach Macroecon is no longer teaching it. My boss had Denslow 20+ years ago and said he was great. Why couldn't his video continued to be used for the current students? familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): josseealvarez: UF student evaluations can be found on www.isis.ufl.edu joseealvarez: Thanks! familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bittare1: here is a neat guide for the housing process http://www.housing.ufl.edu/liveon/re-contract.pdf LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator joseealvarez LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator saxena275 LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator saxena275 debbihartman LOBBY judi19 familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bittare1: that is the returning student guide. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): are we missing any questions? saxena275: yes i had asked about add and drop familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): once enrolled for spring semester , can they add or drop classes before the semester begins or they do during add and drop period which is the first week of classes - is this the one saxena275? saxena275: yes debbihartman: is there a way to see follow this chat at a later time? judi19: thank you for your time and information. My daughter has been going to study zone and it has helped her on the calc tests... LOBBY LOBBY wbandetuf judi19 wbandetuf: Lou and Mickey - This is merely a suggestion but my boss who graduated from UF with an accounting degree told me she doesn't understand why Denslow's video couldn't continue to be used. I know Denslow is still on campus. I have to go but I hope you will check into the possibility of this or do you know why it can't be used? judi19: Have a nice holiday everyone! LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): debbiehartman: all of our scripts will be available on our webiste here: http://www.dso.ufl.edu/nsfp/parents/familyonline/ LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): saxena275: students can register (drop/add) for Spring up until December 20. Advance registration then reopens on December 22 (after fall grades are posted) and stays open until January 5. Students can also adjust their Spring schedule during the first week of class (January 9-13). Hope this is the info you needed. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): debbiehartmann: our next chat will be on November 30, 2011 at 5:00pm until 7:00pm concerning finals and anything else you would like to talk about. wbandetuf saxena275 wbandetuf: Thank you for moderating this chat, Lou and Mickey (and Allison). I'll check back in a few days to see what I missed on the chat. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. saxena275: yes thanks lou bdjdlarsen bdjdlarsen: This is a question regarding returning students applying for housing: If my son wants to live on campus again next year (his sophomore year), is he guaranteed a spot or is there a lottery system for returning students? LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY wbandetuf LOBBY Lorrie LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY bdjdlarsen wbandetuf familychatmoderator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bdjdlarsen: if he pays the deposit he is usually gaurenteed a spot. There is a lottery for location though. Here is the re-application process information http://www.housing.ufl.edu/liveon/re-contract.pdf wbandetuf: Good point. Before I leave, I am curious about the housing question also. I know I have the FL Pre-Paid Dorm plan for two years so will my son be guaranteed a spot for next year (his sophomore year)? Lorrie: These chats are very informative and I thank you all. Happy Thanksgiving to all. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): wbandetuf: in that same guide it provides some addtional information about pre-paid. bdjdlarsen: Is it like the freshman contract process in that the earlier you pay the deposit the sooner you get to choose a room in the process? He would really like to remain in his current dorm (Riker). wbandetuf: Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Happy Thanksgiving to you all, as well. LOBBY karendaunn LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY gmaer LOBBY LOBBY gmaer familychatadministrator LOBBY LOBBY gmaer gmaer karendaunn: Happy Thanksgiving!!! familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bdjdlarsen: it is a complete lottery system and it does not matter when you pay as long as it is by the deadline. gmaer: HI, has there been any discussion about fraternity housing second semester, and prepaid dorm already signed up for ? gmaer: Sorry, odd phrasing. Wasn't sure this was still ongoing chat. Son wants to move into frat house, we have prepaid dorm for this yr. How do we deal with this? familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): gmaer: it sure is still going gmaer: I am glad I didn't miss it! We have been trying to figure out how this fraternity housing works. gmaer: Any tips? LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY saxena275 LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY gmaer familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): gmaer: unfortunately that is definately a question for the housing department. I do not want to give you the wrong answer so I would have your son or you call over to them and ask that question. Here is the number: (352) 392-2161. Sorry to defer but when money is involved I want to get it right. saxena275: if its FL prepaid call them they were helpful in giving me info about changing housing options familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): saxena275 that was going to be my second option as well gmaer: Ok, I wrote that down for tomorrow. Is Fla Prepaid number the same as the housing or do I call the State of Fla number? LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): State of Florda number would be the best option LOBBY bdjdlarsen LOBBY gmaer bdjdlarsen: Will my son be assigned a date and time to sign on to the housing portal like his freshman year to select a room? If it's a lottery, how will their lottery number be assigned? gmaer: Thanks; Here is a perhaps indelicate query: is administration aware of underage drinking on campus, just looking the other way until ... familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bdjdlarsen: it is actually completely random. They will be put into a lottery generator by the last four digits of their UF ID (just the system used) and then it will just spit out the numbers in random order. LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): gmaer: UF takes this very seriously. In fact, before students can register for Spring semester, they have to complete an Alcohol Eduation Tutorial. LOBBY LUVIOLA LUVIOLA: MY SON DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT HIS MAJOR FOR NEXT SEMESTER... LOBBY bdjdlarsen LOBBY LOBBY gmaer LUVIOLA LOBBY familychatadministrator bdjdlarsen: And that lottery number will be the order in which they get their room request? gmaer: I would not like to be the one to suggest campus police police frat houses for booze paid for by frat dues. Parents thus are subsidizing this alcohol consumption, and if disagree, son does not get accepted into frat..... LUVIOLA: ANY SUGGESTIONS? familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): gmaer: also our wellness folks really do a great job of trying to educate students about the dangers associated with drinking alcohol and the repercussions. Check out their website: http://www.counseling.ufl.edu/cwc/parentsandfamilies.aspx LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator LOBBY saxena275 LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator gmaer LOBBY familychatmoderator familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): Luviola: Definitely have him complete some of the online assessments at www.crc.ufl.edu as a place to start. We also have advisors in the Academic Advising Center that work specifically with exploratory students. saxena275: do the advisor inform them that they have to take the alcohol tutorial or do they get email if they not done it as my son registered for spring already and i do not know if he took it familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): bdjdlarsen: yes... after the generate the order your student will be assigned a time when they can log into the portal and select a room. gmaer: When is deadline for spring registration for classes? familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): saxena275: there is a block (hold) on their advance registration until it is completed. LOBBY bdjdlarsen LOBBY LOBBY familychatmoderator saxena275 LOBBY familychatadministrator LOBBY LOBBY LOBBY familychatadministrator gmaer familychatadministrator bdjdlarsen: Do most returning students who want to live on campus get to? The upper classmen on his hall said they usually do. Is that true? familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): gmaer: Students are registering for Spring now. They can continue to adjust their schedule until Dec. 20 and then from Dec. 22 until the last day of drop/add for Spring (January 13). saxena275: thanks Lou familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): gmaer: back to the fraternity comment here is some more information on how to get in contact with the Sorority and Fraternity Affairs Office for some of those concerns: https://www.studentinvolvement.ufl.edu/SororityFraternityAffairs familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): Just about 5 minutes remain so get those last minute questions in gmaer: thanks, I appreciate these chats. Happy Turkey day to all. familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): gmaer thanks for stopping by LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): any other questions hanging around out there? I guess he'll figure it out. saxena275: one last question why do you have a game the weekend of thanksgiving making it a difficult choice for kids familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): saxena275 we do not set the schedule it is just the way the calendars fall each year. familychatmoderator(UF Advisor Lou): It was been great chatting with you all. Thank you for your great questions. saxena275: just kidding good night and thanks familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): hahaha thanks for coming LOBBY familychatadministrator familychatadministrator(UF NSFP Mickey): All right folks I think that is all the time we have.
