THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN REDIRECTION LMLA CHAPTER #560 In early November 2015, LMLA Chapter #560 President Geoff Rabinowitz put out the call to membership. This call was to determine the direction of our chapter – Should we stay or should we go? Included in that call was the opportunity to sign up for newly formed committees. Those that answered met in December to discuss the path forward of Chapter #560. December provided the answer from committee volunteers. We want to stay. However, we need to do things a little differently to promote membership engagement and ensure membership is getting what they pay for. To that end – and because we are an engineering firm and thrive on process – each committee was challenged to create a Concept of Operations, including those processes by which the Chapter would operate. Events Committee Determine events timeline and communicate to Communications Committee for publicity Use information from membership committee surveys to create events that spark membership interest Communications Committee (Comm Comm) Update the LMLA SharePoint for better user experience Publish newsletter on bi-monthly basis Provide all email communications from board members and all committees Publicize events and make use of ETV and Eureka postings for better member engagement Membership Committee Assign committee members to specific tasks such as onboarding, surveys, applications, etc. Determine optimal dates for membership drives Introduce LMLA at NEROP and NESSC Perform entrance and exit surveys for continuous improvement efforts Provide new member spotlights to Comm Comm for newsletter. We need opinions! See our Eureka Stream for questions about our LMLA #560 SharePoint and communication methods. The committees have been hard at work (as you will see in this newsletter). These are volunteer positions and each committee meets once or twice a month to meet these goals. We are working for you, the membership, and are determined to make The Rocky Mountain LMLA Chapter #560 an organization to which you want to belong and from which you can benefit in your professional life here at Lockheed Martin. Interested in joining a committee? Please notify Membership Committee Lead Justin Morgan for more information. * denotes committee lead 3 Member Spotlight Jessica Harano, Vice President Please tell us a little about yourself. I am a Colorado native and grew up in Louisville, CO. I have a BS from CU-Boulder in Aerospace Engineering and an ME from CU-Boulder in Engineering Management. My hobbies include skiing, snowboarding, soccer, hiking, and camping. You can find me skiing or snowboarding almost every weekend during the winter and hiking or camping almost every weekend during the summer, with some soccer mixed in on the weeknights year round. In September 2016 I will be trekking from Lukla, Nepal to Everest Base Camp! I’m so excited and can’t wait for this trip! There have been a lot of people moving to Colorado from out of state. What activities or places would you recommend they check out? In my opinion, the #1 thing to do in Colorado is anything outdoors. If you are completely new to skiing and snowboarding, Copper Mountain has a great program called Ski and Ride University, which includes 3 lessons, lift tickets, equipment rental, parking, lunch, AND A SEASON PASS all for $199! How long have you been with Lockheed Martin and what’s your current position? I have been with Lockheed Martin since December 2007, so 8 years. I am on the MSP (Military Support Program) in the GN&C (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) group. MSP is part of Space Systems Company’s Special Programs line of business. What’s been your favorite experience so far while working for Lockheed Martin? My favorite experience is the work I am doing currently. MSP is preparing for CDR, and I am really enjoying working toward a big program milestone on a big, well established program with a long history. There are so many technical experts, with a lifetime of experience and knowledge, that I enjoy learning from as we work together toward CDR. When did you join the LMLA Chapter #560? I joined LMLA Chapter 560 in May 2012, so I have been a member for 3.5 years. How did you hear about LMLA Chapter #560? I found a copy of the LMLA Newsletter online somewhere. In the newsletter they were advertising a BBQ that was open to all Lockheed Martin employees. I went to the BBQ and signed up to become a member. How has your experience been since coming to Lockheed Martin? I have really enjoyed working for Lockheed Martin. When I first started working for Lockheed Martin, I moved jobs frequently. I was trying to find a job that was the best fit for my skills as well as something I really enjoyed doing. I really appreciate that Lockheed Martin and my various managers were very supportive of me finding something that was the right fit for me. I also really appreciate that there were so many different jobs I could try in (Continued on the next page) 4 Member Spotlight Jessica Harano, Vice President order to find what worked best. I worked at a small company before moving to Lockheed Martin, and the ability to try something different or find a new specialty was very limited because the scope of the work the company performed was very limited compared to the scope of work that Lockheed Martin performs, as well as the fact that most employees had been in their jobs for many years and weren’t interested in moving around and trying something new, which therefore limited my ability to move around and try something new. What have you liked or disliked about the LMLA chapter since coming aboard? I have really liked how supportive all of the other LMLA Officers and Board Members are of this organization and my own leadership development. I would really like to thank our Board Members Jim Paradise and Phillip Tefft for their un-wavering support of our chapter and their continued encouragement of my personal growth. I dislike the fact that the LMLA name is not well known at the Colorado Lockheed Martin campuses and many leaders don’t understand the benefits of the organization. At other Lockheed Martin campuses around the country, LMLA is a large organization that encompasses over half of the campus population. The benefits of LMLA is widely recognized and supported by the leaders at these campuses. 10 years from now when you look back at your LMLA experience, what would you like to say you experienced or gained from becoming a part of the LMLA team? I think my experience as Vice President of the chapter is something that I will utilize for the rest of my career. I was hesitant to take this position, but Geoff Rabinowitz encouraged me, and I would like to thank him for his encouragement. My experience as Vice President has given me the opportunity to test out my leadership skills in a fairly consequence free environment. Because this organization is external to my current job, the ups and downs of my learning process do not affect my job performance. But, I can incorporate items I have learned during my LMLA experiences into my current job. Just like any skill, leadership takes practice. LMLA gives me the opportunity to practice my leadership skills so that they will be finely tuned when I need them in my work environment. Is there anything you would change about LMLA? Or anything you would change about Lockheed Martin? If I could change one thing about LMLA, I would make LMLA membership free. I think the monetary cost of membership makes some people think twice about joining our chapter versus joining other on-campus ERGs that are free. If a person is interested in donating their time to an organization, I think they would be more likely to engage if their membership didn’t also require a monetary donation. If I could change one thing about Lockheed Martin, it would be the LMCommit system. I would implement a W. Edwards Deming system in its place. “A manager of people needs to understand that all people are different. This is not ranking people. He needs to understand that the performance of anyone is governed largely by the system that he works in, the responsibility of management. A psychologist that possesses even a crude understanding of variation … could no longer participate in refinement of a plan for ranking people.” from The New Economics for Industry, Government, Education by W. Edwards Deming. 5 Membership Thoughts By The Rest of Us We want your thoughts! This box will be populated by responses on our Eureka Stream. Keep an eye out for questions because we want your thoughts here. We may surprise and teach one another about how we approach life’s situations. (January prompted major responses and responses to the responses!) Just when you finish your LM Commits, it's time to draft the new year's items. What tips and tricks do you have to make this job requirement easier or more beneficial? First off, I copy and paste my commitments from last year, but I think everyone does that. Second, my tech lead will send out his commitments to the group. This really helps me because his commitments are generally a roll up of what the entire group is doing. So, I can easily pick out the parts that I know I will be working on, and copy and paste them into my commitments. This is really helpful for me because my tech lead has been involved in PRS/LMCommit for a long time and knows the best areas to highlight and the best way to word specific items. So, I can just copy and paste from his commitments and benefit from his many years of experience. - Jessica Harano When submitting your own LM Commits or your Stakeholders feedback there is a tool in the "Behaviors" section that provides suggested comments for sections IC.1, IC.2, and IC.3 that can be selected and inserted into the comments section. The tool has an icon that looks like an outstretched hand. I usually populate several comments to get my thoughts in order and then edit the generic responses in the system to more clearly reflect my thoughts. Also, I set up monthly reminders in Outlook to update LM Commits so I can capture thoughts or items from weekly activity reports throughout the year instead of trying to remember items from the 1Q in October. - Marikay Stem Two things - 1) identify what you think you need to work on from last year or a potential growth item not necessarily related to your immediate position (taking a lead role in LMLA could be a good one ;) and 2) Talk to your boss! Ask them for one thing on their year's to do list that you can contribute towards. - Phil Tefft Ensure to go into LM Commit and update progress during the year. This will make your mid-year and end-year less stressful. You will also gauge your own progress. Setup a calendar task reminder. - John Boyea Ensure to go into LM Commit and update progress during the year. This will make your mid-year and end-year less stressful. You will also gauge your own progress. Setup a calendar task reminder. - John Boyea Make sure your Commits are S.M.A.R.T. That is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-based. If they are written SMART-ly, it is possible to meet or exceed them. If not written SMART-ly it is almost impossible to objectively say they were met or exceeded. Give yourself a chance. - Jim Paradise Jim, I think that's where a lot of people trip up. "Develop critical leader skills." How are you going to develop those skills? This is the SMART part - how you measure that abstract commitment. You can take on one stretch assignment for the year (specific, measureable, time-based), request and attend certain leadership training courses (attainable), take a leadership role on the Board of an ERG or other LM group (realistic). The commitment is the abstract and how meet your commitment is being SMART about it. :) - Jennifer Hill Stay tuned to the LMLA #560 Rocky Mountain Eureka Stream for the next opinion generator! 6 7 LMLA #560 LEADERSHIP Organization and Information LMLA #560 Eureka Stream LMLA #560 Small reflections and giant questions happen.
