Undergraduate Business Self-guided Tour
Welcome to UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School! We are one of the oldest public business
schools at the nation’s oldest public university, and we are glad to share our program’s storied
history and facilities with you.
Third Floor: Undergraduate Business Program Office and Classroom
Corridor
Mail Folders. The Undergraduate Business
program has developed a mail system for
students that enables faculty to return
graded assignments, clubs to advertise
upcoming events, and companies to notify
students of upcoming opportunities.
Bulletin Boards. While the Undergraduate
Business program maintains a traditional
bulletin board with program updates and
upcoming career opportunities, the virtual
replacement is our primary resource for
communicating with students. We provide ten
virtual announcement boards ranging from
general career announcements, five different
career functional areas, program, student,
events, and all program announcements.
Students have the ability to opt in and out of
each board as their needs change. This
feature enables each student to control the
type and amount of updates that they will
receive.
Classrooms. Feel free to peer into a
classroom along this hallway. The
entire hallway houses nine classrooms,
where all business classes are held, as
well as many of the company
presentations. Most classrooms seat
around 50 students, but the majority of
our classes range from 20-50 students.
The classrooms themselves are
designed so that every student has a
good seat, with nametag holders, plugs
for power & internet, and a clear view
of the professor. Each room can
teleconference and video record (if a
student has to miss a class, this is a
very convenient feature!), and has a
host of other presentation capabilities.
Third Floor to First Floor: Staircases and Elevators
The spiral stairway is located at the back of the building and the
main elevator is located in the center of the building. An additional
staircase and service elevator are located on the right side of
building.
The spiral stairway is enhanced by the four-story exterior window
created by New York artist David Wilson.
First Floor: Café McColl and the McColl Dining Room
Café McColl
Café McColl has an indoor capacity of
280 seats and is used by all four
Kenan-Flagler programs
(Undergraduate Business, Masters of
Accounting, MBA, PhD). We offer a
food service area, open five days a
week, with a variety of dining choices,
including hot entrees, a salad bar,
Starbucks Coffee ® bar, and other
cold beverages.
The dining room features three large
plasma screen TV’s, a printing kiosk,
microwaves, and a three-season
open-air patio, enclosed in the
wintertime. The entire Café is
wireless, as is the rest of the business
campus. Power outlets are available
with every seat.
First Floor: Computer Lab & Study Rooms
Computer Lab. As part of our recent renovations to the school, we completely redesigned our
lab. With 32 machines, plus a multimedia room with scanner and resume printer, students have
24-hour access to the lab and can print at either end through networked printers.
Students may bring their own laptop but the vast majority of students choose to purchase a
laptop through the Carolina Computing initiative, which offers excellent machines at wholesale
prices. The IT Helpdesk is open 7 days a week, offers loaners, has online/distance help
services, and is completely free for any services performed on initiative-purchased machines.
Study Rooms. The study rooms that
surround the computer lab (there are 24
total) are an instrumental piece of our teambased curriculum at the Undergraduate
Business program. Each room can
comfortably seat six people and is equipped
with white boards and 32-inch LCD screen
TV’s, with computer connections. Each
study room can be reserved online using
Microsoft Outlook, which our students use
for email and calendar scheduling.
Second Floor: Tilman Lobby & Capital Markets Lab
Lobby & History. Tillman Lobby is named after our esteemed
Professor Emeritus, Rollie Tillman Jr., who has demonstrated
a remarkable commitment to Kenan-Flagler over his more than
40 years of professorship here. Another part of our storied
history is our namesake, Mary Lily Kenan-Flagler. Mary Lily
was married to Henry Flagler, former partner/owner of
Standard Oil along with John D. Rockefeller. The two never
had children and left their entire estate to a nephew, Frank
Hawkins Kenan. Mr. Kenan generously donated a portion of
the estate to our school in Mary Lily’s name. Kenan-Flagler
Business School is the only top 20 business school named
after a woman, a fact we proudly announce.
Core Values Plaque.
Please take the time to read our values, and reflect on what
they mean to us at Kenan-Flagler. These five values guide us
in our endeavors.
Capital Markets Lab. The Capital Markets Lab combines typical trading floor architecture with live
data feeds and sophisticated financial software platforms used on trading floors at all major
financial institutions. We have Bloomberg, Reuters, FactSet, and soon, PerTrac data/software
platforms for use by students and faculty. What makes this trading room different from all the other
trading rooms at business schools in the U.S. is that we are integrating the data/software
capabilities of the lab into ongoing courses. Rather than being an add-on that is not connected to
the finance curriculum, we teach finance elective course in the lab and provide regular, strong links
between theory and professional practice.
Second Floor: Latané Plaza & Business Campus
McColl Building Exterior.
Under the overhang of the
McColl building are a series
of flags. These flags are
changed twice a semester to
reflect the nationalities
represented at Kenan-Flagler
in our student body, our
faculty and our staff. KenanFlagler prides itself on its
international student
population as well as the
opportunities for international
immersion that our domestic
students seek. These flags
represent our continued
commitment to global
business education.
Kenan Center. The Kenan
Center is opposite and
across the plaza from Koury
Auditorium. The Kenan
Center houses the Kenan
Institute, a private institute
associated with KenanFlagler. The Kenan Institute
is comprised of nine private
research institutes, which
study and publish research
on everything from air
commerce to real estate
development. There are
ample opportunities for
Undergraduate Business
involvement in these
institutes with regard to
research and networking.
Latané Plaza. Named after former head of the PhD
program, Henry Latané (pronounced Lah-tah-nay),
this plaza is where we host nearly all of our outdoor
events for the Undergraduate Business program,
including our private Graduation Ceremony in May.
Also noteworthy is the remarkable proximity of the
plaza to the famed Dean Dome, where our storied
Tar Heel Men’s Basketball team plays their home
games.
Second Floor: Koury Auditorium
Koury Auditorium.
A two-story 500-seat auditorium
provides the perfect place for
the participants of the Dean's
Speaker series. Past speakers
have included: the former
chairman of NASDAQ, the CEO
of GE, Joe Klein (author and
Time Magazine columnist), and
Steve Forbes.
Koury auditorium is most often
utilized for the accounting
prerequisite course, all-class
meetings, or special events.
