Robert Carsten, PSA, CPS
Pastel Workshop May 6th, 7th and 8th
Robert is planning a day for each of these themes:
It's Raining, It's Pouring: Join Van Gogh and other
great masters who learned the visual drama in
depicting fields, gardens, towns and people in wind
and rain or snow. Lesson: Tonalism. The
Impressionist Garden: What could be more glorious
than the subject of a summer garden replete with
colorful flowers basking in sunlight? Lesson:
Impressionism. Glorious Waterfalls: Hudson River
School painter John Kensett could not stay away
from Bash Bish Falls. Not a bashful subject,
waterfalls add strength, excitement, even a romantic
elegance to a composition. Lesson: Painting flowing
water, rocks, trees. Robert Carsten, a graduate of
the Rhode Island School of Design and was a scholar
to the Academia di Belle Arti in Carrara, Italy. He is
a Board member and signature member of the Pastel
Society of America and is a contributing writer to the
Pastel Journal and The Artist's Magazine. His pastel
paintings have been shown in many museums and
galleries, are collected worldwide and have won
many awards. His work is part of a selections
exhibition at the Butler Institute of American Art and
was featured in The Artist's Magazine, The Pastel
Journal, and Strokes of Genius/The Best of Drawing
as well as in Pure Color/The Best of Pastel, and
American Art Review. Visit his website:

Karen Rosasco
Experimental Media
Acrylic Workshop
May 13, 14, 15
Karen Rosasco, an award-winning watermedia artist
and a retired high school art teacher. She is a selfdescribed shape maker who chooses to emphasize
design and composition as the foundation for the
symbols she places on the paper or canvas. Karen
is using a variety of watermedia in layers to achieve
a highly textural and dynamic presentation. After 40
years of painting realistic interpretations of
landscapes, florals and architectural themes, Karen
finds this new concentration on the relationships
between the basic elements of art (shape, value,
line, color and texture) to be a more exciting
personal approach to her art.
Her prize winning work has been accepted in
regional and national juried shows including the
American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club and
Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Exhibitions in NYC and
can be found in private and corporate collections in
the USA. The Arkell Art Museum purchased a
painting for their contemporary collection, and was
awarded Best of Show at the Cooperstown, NY
Regional Show "Essentials” and a Silver Medal for
second place in the 2007 American Watercolor
Society International Exhibition. Karen graduated
from the State University of NY at New Paltz with
an honors degree in Art Education.
This workshop will sell out fast…send your nonrefundable deposit of $25. Payable to CAL to Kris
Woodward, 44 Hoffman Drive, Latham 12110 to
secure your spot. There are 12 spots left! Total
cost for this 3-day workshop is $144.00, nonmembers, $164.

Money Matters
The Colonie Art League had a very successful year
from Sept. 2011-Aug. 2012. Our membership held
steady with just under 200 members with some
attrition of old members, but a steady increase of
new members. The holiday show was a success with
the enhanced opportunity of saleable works, there
were interesting demoists for the general meetings,
four workshops and scholarships given to two high
school seniors. We were able to end the year with a
surplus of $3,017 in our operating fund. With this
surplus and funds on deposit at the Bank of America
and Edward Jones Investments, the current league's
assets are approximately $26,500.

REMINDER
We suggest getting in the habit of checking our
website regularly. Jack Berkery is always updating
information between newsletters.
CAL Website Things you Ought to Know
In our website, www.colonieartleague.com ,there is a
page for members to display their artwork. It is
labeled "Member Art for Sale". The CAL web site is
not a commercial web site and does not sell directly
or indirectly to potential clients. It will only display
your wares and contact information if someone
wants to buy. One option for the CAL web site is to
make a page with your name on it and include a few
examples of your artwork along with your contact
information, phone number, or email address.
Another option, if you already have a personal web
site is to have the link on the CAL website jump
directly to your web site. If you wish to participate
either way, email the details to
jackpaints@nycap.rr.com.
Town Hall Community Art Venue
At the Town Hall Reception, Alison Long reminded
the members of CAL that if they are interested in
using the corridor walls as a community venue for
art, that she would be happy to arrange that for them.
Either as an individual show or a show for several
artists, the space will accommodate up to 40 pieces
for a two-month exhibition period. There is a space
for a reception and Alison will provide news
announcements such as in the Colonie Spotlight.
Just provide copies of a price list and it will be
places in the hallway.
Contact Alison Long at 783-2728
or LaneA@colonie.org for details.
