One of the elements that Stetson Lifelong prides itself on is its approach to community-building and our fun members-only events including lectures, musical performances, field trips, and club offerings. Below is a list of all the “extras” just for our members: Stetson Lifelong Book Club The Mysteries of Life Join us the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. as we discuss three mystery novels -- each of which transcends its genre to give us insights into the mysteries of life. In September, we will read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. The Woman in White is considered to be one of the first, and finest, mystery novels. Written in 1859, it is an early example of detective fiction as well as of sensational fiction. In 2003, The Observer listed it as number 23 in “the top 100 greatest novels of all time.” In October, we’ll discuss The Daughter of Time, written in 1951 by Josephine Tey. The Daughter of Time fuses the detective novel with historical fiction as a 1950’s detective investigates the alleged crimes of King Richard III of England, the monarch supposedly guilty of the murder of the young princes in the Tower of London. The Daughter of Time was voted number one in “The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time” by the UK Crime Writers’ Association in 1990 and rated as “one of the best mysteries of all time” by The New York Times. In November, we will read The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, the first of a series of novels by Alexander McCall Smith. The novel, published in 1998, introduces us to Mma Precious Ramotswe who opens the first female detective agency in Botswana. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is a mystery novel that gives us glimpses of the culture, traditions, and beauty of Botswana. It has been adapted as a movie, a television series filmed by the BBC and HBO, and a radio series for BBC Radio.
