Have you ever wondered: Who takes care of the park at
the end of your street? Whom do you call when there
is a pothole in front of your house? Or who can answer
questions about social issues or volunteerism? And by
the way, is there anything going on in Kissimmee and
Tallahassee that we should know about? If you are like most
of the residents in Celebration, you have certainly been
befuddled at some point by the numerous associations,
companies, and government entities that make up our
“Alphabet Soup” governance. In this course, members and
representatives from the various organizations will lead you
through the maze of acronyms and entities that affect how
our town functions on a daily basis.

The Mysteries of Life
Join us the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. as we
discuss three mystery novels -- each of which transcends
its genre to give us insights into the mysteries of life. In
September, we will read The Woman in White by Wilkie
Collins. The Woman in White is considered to be one of the
first, and finest, mystery novels. Written in 1859, it is an
early example of detective fiction as well as of sensational
fiction. In 2003, The Observer listed it as number 23 in
“the top 100 greatest novels of all time.” In October, we’ll
discuss The Daughter of Time, written in 1951 by Josephine
Tey. The Daughter of Time fuses the detective novel with
historical fiction as a 1950’s detective investigates the
alleged crimes of King Richard III of England, the monarch
supposedly guilty of the murder of the young princes in the
Tower of London. The Daughter of Time was voted number
one in “The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time” by the
UK Crime Writers’ Association in 1990 and rated as “one
of the best mysteries of all time” by The New York Times. In
November, we will read The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,
the first of a series of novels by Alexander McCall Smith.
The novel, published in 1998, introduces us to Mma
Precious Ramotswe who opens the first female detective
agency in Botswana. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
is a mystery novel that gives us glimpses of the culture,
traditions, and beauty of Botswana. It has been adapted as
a movie, a television series filmed by the BBC and HBO,
and a radio series for BBC Radio.

Senora de Atocha
For centuries, the wealth of the New World flowed past
Florida’s shores as it made its way to Europe to keep the
Spanish Empire afloat. The Nuestra Senora de Atocha
is one of many Spanish Galleons that left Cuba loaded
with gold, silver, emeralds, and trade goods that did
not make it to Spain. Considered one of the richest and
most significant shipwrecks to ever be lost, the Atocha
was found 30 years ago this summer. On July 20, 1985,
Syd Jones and KT Budde-Jones were part of Mel Fisher’s
“Golden Crew” that found the Atocha Main Pile 40 miles
west of Key West Florida. Syd and KT share their personal
as-it happened stories and photos taking you with them
on the journey that led to the recovery of $500 million
worth of treasure and artifacts.
