PROPELLING THE ECONOMY WITH WIND POWER
The 83 megawatt (MW) Stetson Wind farm was completed in
two phases, and remains one of the largest operational utilityscale wind farms in New England. Located in Maine’s
Washington County, the combined facility can provide power
for about 30,000 New England homes in a normal operating
year, while avoiding 93,000 tons of CO2 emissions that would
result from conventional regional generation sources.
STETSON WIND IS:
Comprised of 55 GE 1.5 megawatt (MW) turbines situated
on Stetson, Jimmy, and Owl Mountains
Built along existing roads on land that was already partially
cleared, enabling new economic potential while
maintaining the area’s natural open spaces
Producing natural wind energy under the leadership of
First Wind, a wind power leader committed to the
communities in which its projects are located
Providing tax revenue to Washington County over a multiyear period
GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT,
THE ECONOMY, AND THE COUNTRY
In addition to providing clean, safe, power for New England, great
care is taken to integrate the Stetson Wind Facility into
Washington County’s rolling hills with minimal impacts. First
Wind’s environmental team works through rigorous permitting
requirements with state agencies and Federal organizations. At
Stetson Wind and First Wind’s other Maine projects, we maximize
use of Maine’s working forests and previously existing logging
roads. Finally, First Wind environmental biologists provide
ongoing wildlife and habitat monitoring in consultation with
government agencies and NGOs.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS
Annual tax payments provide funds that can be used to
improve schools, maintain roads, and enhance other public
services.
More than 350 people were employed, and over $50 million
was spent with in-state businesses on local goods and
services such as gravel, trucking, lodging and food.
Wind power has no fuel costs, so its price is more predictable
than conventional fossil fuels, which helps stabilize energy
rates
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Wind Energy has zero air or water emissions.
The energy produced by Stetson Wind is the equivalent of
burning approximately 331,000 barrels of oil or over 89,000
short tons of coal per year, yet has none of the associated
toxicity, health, or cost issues.
The reduction of fossil fuels burned is eliminating the emission
of approximately 76,000 tons of CO2 (a greenhouse gas)
annually into our atmosphere.
