I found out a lot about modeling that i didn't know and now i'm more educated and the reader of this paper will be more educated. There are certain requirements for those who are interested in modeling in the fashion world. FASHION INDUSTRY
When one is interested in entering the profession of fashion modeling, there are a number of things that should be considered. one need to know Exactly how tall does a person have to be in order to be that type of model. also what kind of diet and exercise does a model have to follow in order to stay fit should be contemplated. A successful model should be able to reflect on his or her diet, exercise routine and overall health. A successful model knows What kind of body type does a person need in order to be a fashion model. Fashion models should be conscious of their weight and how it can affect their employment opportunities. These are all important questions that a model needs to be asking themselves if trying to pursue modeling as a hobby or career. In today’s fashion industry, there are many standards that are required to be a model. Models get paid on average about less than $35,000 dollars per year while more successful models make about $50,000 to $100,000 per year. “The rates are highest in New York City where it’s not unusual for a model to make five or six thousand a day” (San Diego Model Management, 2009). Run way models earn 200 dollars for every hour and a half on a photo shoot. kid print models earn 50 to 75 dollars an hour and can work up to 8 hours a day. The salary really depends on what type of modeling a person is doing and if you are a male or female because men models are more obligated than female models because of that fact that there are more women models than guy models in todays industry. before going into pursue modeling figure out what type of model you want to be. Plus size is best for women who are more full and curvy. if a person has One standard in today's industry is being a certain height. When most people think of models, they expect them to be tall, but not all designers want super tall models especially in print modeling as a person can be 5’3 and look 5’7 in a picture. For example, the http://antm411.com/antmcycle13/ models on America's Next Top Model season 13 are all petite models. That means that they FASHION INDUSTRY
are shorter than the average model (5’7 or shorter). In every single one of their pictures they looked tall because they elongated their necks and did poses that involved stretching their limbs out and away from their bodies. However, runway does require taller heights because they are being seen with the naked eye and not on the pages of a magazine. Commercial models such as: Revlon, Covergirl, and Hanes have a required height of 5’6 to 5’11 for females and 5’9 to 6’2 for males. The criteria is different but height is important. To be a catalog model, you have to be between the heights of 5’8 and 5’11. Editorial/fashion modeling, as seen on the covers of Elle and Vogue, have a required height of 5’8 to 6’0 for females and a required height of 5’9 to 6’2 for male models. Plus size modeling requires both male and female models to be 5’8 to 6’2 although for some agencies there are some exceptions. Oprah Winfrey, Queen Latifah and Whitney Williams are perfect examples of both commercial and plus size models. all though to modeling industries, plus size modeling is unacceptable there just as many plus size models than there is regular models . The second standard in today's industry is measurements. Not all agencies require measurements because of the fact that they like varieties to choose from. Some modeling agencies such as Victoria Secret requires models measurements to be 342434 meaning the bust size has to be 34 inches, the waist line has to be 24 inches and hip size has to be 34 inches. Actress, journalist, and TV presenter Maria Menounos has the exact measurements of 342434 so she would be eligible to do Victoria’s Secret modeling. Famous model, actor, singer Alicia Keys has measurements of 342638, so she would not be able to be a Victoria’s Secret model because she has more hips and thighs than they want. Hollister models have to have a 32 inch bust, 21 inch waist and a 32 inch hip measurement. Men do not have certain measurements to follow as women do, but they are picked based on what type of body they have. Guys are looked at differently by agencies depending on what the agents FASHION INDUSTRY
are looking for such as broad shoulders, muscular arms, a skinny body, nice abs, certain types of hair and specific requirements demanded by their customers. Another standard is taking care of oneself. Models do wear a lot of makeup to cover their blemishes, but it is very time consuming. If an agency has to spend more than an hour on a model’s makeup, they are not considered a good investment. Good health is a must for a model. Eating and drinking healthy foods and beverages, working out, taking good care of outer appearances as well as ones insides is very important. For example, keeping skin clear and glowing, washing ones face in the morning and at night, exfoliating once a week because this is important as it is getting within the pores and surfaces and creases of skin and it is not just wiping off with water. Models are expected to have and maintain a healthy appearance. Another example of taking care of oneself as a model is fitness expectations. There are trainers who work specifically with models that can help with shaping a body to how one wants it. An alternative to using a personal trainer is a basic home fitness routine, but what is most important is staying consistent. Models must also eat right. It is important to always eat healthy food and healthy amounts of food. Vegetables, fruits, whole grain, and proteins should make up a models diet. Sugars, starches and fats should be avoided as much as possible. As tempting as snacks sound, they are bad for ones health and there are alternatives for those snacks. Portfolios are highly recommended and requested from all modeling agencies because they want to see if their is the potential for what they are looking for. These agencies also want to see how a potential model looks in pictures. The portfolio should have a cover page stating the name of the model, date of birth, experience and references, measurements eye color, hair color, height and weight. A models portfolio should include face shots meaning pictures and close ups of the face, and body shots meaning showing the face and body with no leg showing. Full body shots mean that the face and body FASHION INDUSTRY
and legs are showing so they can get a better look at the model overall. If a portfolio is requested, it is best that a potential model get pictures taken professionally and not by an amateur because they give a better idea of what type of look they can fulfill. The pictures in a portfolio should be natural or with very little makeup and a plain back ground. A plain background is a white wall, brick wall, or a black wall, or outside next to nature such as trees, grass, so the main pictures focus is on the model. If backgrounds are too busy or abstract, they tend to distract the viewer from what is really important, which is the model and how they look in the clothes they are wearing. There are many standards and considerations that must be made before entering the field of fashion modeling that have to be met in ordered to be a model. Potential models should be mindful and aware of how their height, weight and overall health can affect potential employment This potential models should be mindful and aware of how their height, weight and overall health can affect potential employment. fashion models should keep up to date, professional portfolios to make sure the stay competitive and find employment with this resource. can range from the way one looks to the personality portrayed, but like famous former model and talk show host Tyra Banks said, “Women need to understand that there is no such thing as standard beauty.” Whether a plus size model, a hand model, foot model or any other type of model, beauty is within the eye of the beholder.
