Spotlights on events
Leeds Met Live
Leeds Met Live was held on 23 January and proved to be a great
success. Purple Shards from Newcastle College performed at the
event, along with a number of other student bands. There was a
variety of different genres of music on offer, including acoustic
sets, gameboy inspired tracks and heavy rock.
All the performers were received well by the audience. Members of
Leeds Met staff went along to the event to show the students
support. Neil Kingston from the BBC invited Innovation North
student, Neil Ward, to visit the BBC studios for a radio spot on the show ‘Raw Talent’, as a result of
seeing him play at Leeds Met Live.
Music Studio Challenge
The Music Studio Challenge was held on 30 January – 1 February at
Headingley Campus. Students from Loughborough College, Park
Lane College, Newcastle College, and Calderdale College took part
in the event, which saw each group take a randomly picked popular
song to produce their own version. The winning team was
Newcastle College (pictured), who transformed Pink’s ‘So What?’
into a jazzy rock track with a bar brawl theme.
RELAY
A festival of performances from Regional University Network colleges took place on Thursday 29 January
at Leeds Met’s Civic Quarter. Students from Park Lane College, Calderdale College, The Manchester
College, Hull College, Leeds Thomas Danby College and Leeds Met took part in the event.
RELAY demonstrated the positive impact collaboration and
partnership between different institutions can have on
students, staff, and Performing Arts. The performances
included durational pieces which led the way from one
performance to the next. The durational pieces mainly
consisted of a group of Performing Arts students standing in
randomly placed queues around the University and telling
confused passers‐by that they needed to join these queues.
