Kearney(Co-Chair) J. Hoffman (Secretary) From its opening in 1907, Riverdale Collegiate has established a reputation for academic excellence. Over 80% of the students who graduate from Riverdale enter post-secondary education and over one third of the graduating class are Ontario Scholars, achieving an average of over 80%. Riverdale's program includes many opportunities for students to use and study computer technology. There are 10 computer labs, a modern computerized library with a new language lab, and students are involved in computer applications in many subject areas. Our Extended French program offers instruction in French in a variety of subjects. To be eligible for enrolment in this program, students must be in a Grade 8 Extended French program in an elementary school located in the east-end of the former City of Toronto (Earl Grey Sr. P.S., Queen Alexandra Sr. P.S., or Bowmore P.S.). All other students wishing to enrol in the Extended French Program must apply using the TDSB's Procedure for Optional Attendance. In order to register for regular program, students must live in Riverdale's catchment area. (see TDSB website for street guide) As a result of the Riverdale ARC that was put in place several years ago to control overcrowding at the school, we are not permitted to register in-area students into regular program for grades 10, 11 or 12. In addition, we are not permitted to register students into regular program grade 9 for September 2009, beyond the March 2nd, 2009 deadline For more information, please contact the school and ask for Warren Fick in the Guidance Department. The academic program is complemented by a wide variety of clubs and sporting activities such as field hockey, basketball, volleyball, soccer, debating, hiking, recycling, school newspaper, and Riverdale-Against-Discrimination. Excellent arts programs are available in music (vocal, strings, band), visual art, and drama. The student body is drawn from many ethnic groups, and the school prides itself on the spirit of co-operation that exists among its students and staff. The motto of Riverdale Collegiate is "There is no better school". There is a flourishing School Council that meets regularly with parents and participates in a number of school projects. These assessments are based on clear expectations for all learners, consistent with those described in The Ontario Curriculum. The primary purpose of student assessment is to improve learning. Assessment has the greatest potential to improve learning when it is an integral part of classroom activities. Teachers assess student progress towards achieving the expectations on an ongoing basis by using strategies such as projects, class presentations, homework assignments, classroom observations, portfolios of student work, and tests. Schools use assessment information and information from other sources to make informed decisions for school improvement planning. Schools identify areas of strength as well as areas that require improvement. Input is obtained from a variety of sources such as student assessments, teacher feedback, parent feedback, and community surveys. In this way, schools monitor, celebrate and improve their efforts in providing a supportive and challenging learning environment for all their students. + . % .: . ; ♦ 1.
