Innovative by tradition:
Milestones of company history
1947 Founding of company by Erich Friedrich.
1951Construction of first processing plant in Stiddien near Braunschweig, annual capacity
100,000 t.
1964Company headquarters moves to Salzgitter-Immendorf; erection of a plant in Salzgitter-Immendorf on the grounds of the current Reststoffzentrum Barum (RZB).
1980World wide Construction of treatment plants: In cooperation with a partner, numerous
plants with annual capacities of 1.0 to 3.5m t are planned and built in India, China,
Hungary and the USSR, among other places.
1990Merger of processing activities and founding of the companies ERICH FRIEDRICH
Hüttenservice GmbH and ERICH FRIEDRICH Handel GmbH.
2000ERICH FRIEDRICH Handel GmbH take over operations in the steelworks of Salzgitter
Flachstahl GmbH and Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, including the transport of liquid
slag, the management of slag pits and the subsequent processing of recyclable steelworks by-products.
2010ERICH FRIEDRICH Handel GmbH operates plant for tipping liquid pig iron and its
recovery for Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.
2013ERICH FRIEDRICH Handel GmbH carries out processing and marketing activities for
EAF slags for the company Peiner Träger GmbH.
2015ERICH FRIEDRICH Handel GmbH takes over collection and processing of blast furnace slag material for Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. ERICH FRIEDRICH Hüttenservice
GmbH is responsible for the marketing of all slag materials produced at Salzgitter
Flachstahl GmbH.

collection point to the landfill.

Processing of steelworks by-products:
Professional processing, optimal usage
Out of the slag and smelting by-products we recover iron and refractory materials. This process also produces material for economically valuable purposes such as road construction,
civil engineering and railway construction projects. We also produce fertilizers out of BOF
slag for the agricultural and forestry industries.
ERICH FRIEDRICH also offers landfill material and high-quality chippings.
Mechanical processing produces the standardized required quality, grades and mixtures
according to the needs of our clients. In order to ensure maximum re-use potential, we are
constantly on the lookout for new areas in which the materials produced can be used. We
work closely with renowned research institutes in the process.

Blast furnace or steelworks slags:
We make the best of it
Products from blast furnace or steelworks slag, depending on their physical or chemical properties, are suitable for use in a wide variety of applications:
• High-quality mineral mixtures for road construction and civil engineering purposes
• Mineral mixtures for rural road construction
• Mineral mixtures for home construction, garden and landscaping design
• Grit material for paving and patio surfaces
• Converter lime fertilizer in agriculture
• Formation protection layer- (FPL KG 1 and KG 2) and pathway construction material for
railway construction for Deutsche Bahn AG
• Track ballast for railway construction for factory and private railway lines
The products are subject to constant quality control with regard to the requirements they
must meet. This is how we ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction. Road construction material from blast furnace and steelworks slag are subject to a series of technical
specifications – standards, technical regulations, guidelines and spec sheets for use in road
construction and civil engineering projects. The requirements for formation protection layer
and pathway construction material are defined by the technical delivery terms of DB AG. The
monitoring of materials used in road construction and civil engineering, as well as of the material for DB AG, is carried out on a regular basis by independent material testing institutes.

Products from pig iron and steel production:
Customized recycling
The pig iron and steel manufacturing process also produces substances that are not
useable as recycling material in the construction sector, but can be re-used for pig
iron and steel production:
• Refractory materials made out of aluminum and magnesium oxide or other substances,
according to customer needs
• Various ferrous materials and aggregates for the iron and steel industry
• Various non-ferrous metals for the NE metal industry
• Scrap metals for the iron and steel industry
Customers determine the product specifications; grades and qualities are defined and implemented on an individual basis. This applies in particular for the ferrous materials and
aggregates for the steelworks industry and for the recycled NE metals.

Our commitment to nature conservation
From the very start, one of the pillars of the ERICH FRIEDRICH Group’s corporate philosophy has been the commitment to a careful use of environmental resources. Our work
constitutes a very tangible means of utilizing the treasures of
nature in a more economical and sustainable way.
The slag that is produced in the manufacturing of pig iron and
steel are high grade industrial by-products. Their use reduces
the consumption of natural stone, thus making a significant
contribution to active nature conservation. Re-using the byproducts of the iron and steel industry is consistent with the
provisions of the Waste Management Act.
Regular environmental audits and ongoing emission protection measures, such as the retrofitting of machines based
on ecological considerations, stand for the commitment of
ERICH FRIEDRICH to achieve a continual optimization in the
area of environmental protection.
