Trench D6 Daily Journal July17, 2002 We start to articulate the furnace chambers with much caution, beginning with L24 (South) and L28 (North). We also clear the area just to the East of L20. In all of these areas we collect 100% of the soil and mudbrick debri for sampling and analysis. We came across a large piece of carbon in L24 and discovered much more slag on both the North and South walls. At this point we had a clearer view of the oven and found more evidence that only the first (L24), third (L26) and fifth (L28) contained slag. In chamber L27 we found the same layering of large pottery sherds that we found in L25 (about 5 large (10 x10 cm) thick sherds lining an sloped surface (about 45%) joining the West wall of the furnace. To the West of L20 we dig a 20 x 20 cm section into L22 looking for the foundation of L20. About 10 cm down we came across large rocks that continue, possibly a foundation for the furnace. While we have removed much material, the furnace still seems quite stable.
