Desert Meadows AHEC
A
mong the many concerns confronted in the recent legislative session
was the shortage of physicians and related medical services in
Southern Nevada. Nevada lawmakers secured funding for a medical
school at UNLV that will begin to address this shortage.
You might be surprised to learn that Vegas PBS is already working
to educate health care professionals through our Desert Meadows Area Health
Education Center (AHEC). Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services provided funding through UNR to launch this program with three primary objectives: develop a pipeline of qualified local health care workers; provide continuing education training for licensed health professionals; and provide health and
wellness information for the communities we serve.
Vegas PBS is uniquely qualified to meet these objectives by leveraging our PBS
health and wellness programing, extensive online adult education materials, and local
video production capabilities. In our first year, we presented information on health
careers to 2,600 high school science students and provided several workshops for professionals and caregivers on Providing Care for Patients with Dementia, Falls
Prevention and Management, and Boosting
Brain Power through Nutrition.

Assistants, Electronic Health Specialists,
EKG Technicians, Medical Administration Assistants, Phlebotomy Assistants, and

Occupational Certification programs including Advanced Hospital Coding, Pharmacy
Technician, Medical Transcription, Geriatric Aide, and Clinical Dental Assistant.
Additional online continuing education programs such as Advanced Life Support,
Chronic Pain Management, Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, or Sleep and Aging
allow current health care providers to maintain their certifications.
In the last few months alone, Vegas PBS has presented dozens of informative television programs on brain health, yoga and personal exercise, improved diets, advances
in cancer research, treatment for video game addiction, Ebola, vaccinations, and
Parkinson’s disease.
President Eisenhower’s vision for educational television in the 1950s was focused
on reading, science and math education for children, and technology skills for adults.
He viewed both as essential to national defense and economic prosperity. While
Sesame Street and other children’s programs are more celebrated, Vegas PBS has
never abandoned its commitment to adult education. Our children’s TV and Internet
programming relies on you, but our Desert Meadows AHEC programming is self-sustaining through grants and tuition. We look forward to working with all the medical
schools serving our state, including UNR, UNLV, Touro and Roseman Universities, to
educate and support the health care professionals our community desperately needs.

Throughout the Month on Vegas PBS
The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary
of the detonation of an atomic bomb over
Hiroshima that served to end the fighting in
the Pacific theater of World War II and was a
profound turning point in human-kind’s history. Vegas PBS offers new thought-provoking programs that explore the events that
ushered in the dawn of the nuclear age. Las
Vegas was a significant part of that story,
now recounted in a locally produced special
about the Nevada Test Site, which was at the
forefront of atomic testing.

Norris, Sergei Khrushchev and others, along
with men and women who helped build the
weapons piece by piece. Audiences also hear
from former Secretary of State George
Shultz and Secretary of Defense William
Perry who reveal how the bomb was viewed
inside government circles. Those who have
firsthand memories of seeing the first
mushroom clouds fill the skies will share
their stories as well. This groundbreaking
film provides captivating insights through
its masterfully restored footage and its
assembly of voices who were there when the
atomic age began.

Host and physicist Dr. Derek Muller
unlocks the mysteries of uranium. Dr.
Muller explains the fascinating details of
uranium’s origins and longevity. Born from
the collapse of a star, uranium has brought
hope, progress and destruction. It has revolutionized society from medicine to warfare.
It is an element that has profoundly shaped
the past and altered our future and will
exist long after humans have left the Earth.
Filmed on five continents, this two-hour

“Doom Towns” of the Nevada Desert, this
local special follows the development of the
atomic bomb during the mid-1900s, when
political stakes were high, but understanding of nuclear capabilities and consequences was low. The one-hour documentary, produced by Vegas PBS’ Reggie
LaFrance, goes behind the scenes to visit
those small communities that were affected
by nuclear fallout and examines the consequences of being in Nevada’s atomic back
yard. The United States’ race to build the
world's most powerful weapon and Nevada's
crucial role in its testing is recalled by
experts including former Nevada Senator
Richard Bryan, Congresswoman and author
of Bombs in The Backyard Dina Titus,
Darwin Morgan of the U.S. Department of
Energy, and former employees of the
Nevada Test Site now known as the Nevada
National Security Site. Watch as Department
of Energy experts take you on a tour and
reveal just how important the site was and
is today to national security. The story
begins in modern-day, “entertainment capital of the world” Las Vegas, but goes back
in time to show how Southern Nevada
played a crucial role in the development of
powerful and terrifying nuclear weapons.

NOVA: Nuclear Meltdown
Disaster

Four years ago, a devastating earthquake
and tsunami triggered a disastrous meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear
power plant. At the same time, just seven
miles away, the heroic efforts of plant operators under the leadership of Naohiro
Masuda saved a second plant, Fukushima
Daini. Now, Masuda faces the daunting
challenge of cleaning up Daiichi, where a
witches’ brew of radioactive groundwater
leaks into the Pacific Ocean every day, and
three melted cores remain steaming hot and
unapproachable. Now, with unprecedented
access, NOVA reveals the little-known story
of how Masuda and his team averted disaster at Daini and how workers are struggling
to clean up the mess at Daiichi. With billions of dollars and the future of the nuclear

For more than thirty years, Ken Burns
has directed and produced some of the most
acclaimed historical documentaries ever
made. He has brought our collective history
to life and presenting a new way of seeing
ourselves through our past. This month,
delve into some of the defining episodes of
our nation’s history with these extraordinary films.
The Civil War
The highest rated and the most celebrated documentary in public television, this
series explores a pivotal event in our
nation’s history. The war was waged in
10,000 places, more than three million
Americans fought in it, and over 600,000
men – two percent of the population – died
during its course. It was the most horrible,
necessary, intimate, acrimonious, meanspirited, and heroic fight the nation has ever
known. What began as a bitter dispute over
Union and States’ Rights ended as a struggle over the meaning of freedom in America.
The Cause (1861) June 28 at 2 p.m.
Beginning with a searing indictment of
slavery, this first episode dramatically evokes
the causes of the war. With the disastrous
Union defeat at Manassas, Virginia, both sides
now learn it is to be a very long war.

A Very Bloody Affair
(1862)/Forever Free (1862)
June 28 at 4 p.m.
The war to preserve the Union becomes a
war to free the slaves and political fights
become as fierce as those on the battlefield.
The age of modern warfare takes hold as
new weapons and strategies emerge.
President Lincoln prepares the landmark
Emancipation Proclamation to free the
slaves, but must wait for a victorious
moment for this announcement. Finally,
with a victory at Antietam Creek, the bloodiest day of the war gives way to the dawn of
emancipation.
Simply Murder (1863)/
The Universe of Battle (1863)
July 5 at 2 p.m.
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Vicksburg
– their names are etched forever in history
and some of the Civil War’s most noted battlegrounds. While life in the South becomes
more desperate, Northern opposition to
Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation also
grows. The turning point of the war is reached
at the legendary Battle of Gettysburg. For
three days, 150,000 men will fight to the
death in the Pennsylvania countryside. As
the Union drafts more soldiers, riots rage in
New York and African-American troops join
the fight.
This month, delve into some of the defining episodes
of our nation's history with these extraordinary films.”

Robert E. Lee
Valley of the Shadow of
Death (1864)/Most Hallowed
Ground (1864)
July 12 at 2 p.m.
An extraordinary series of battles pitted
Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee against
each other. In 30 days, from the wilderness
to Petersburg, Virginia, the generals who
led the two armies lose more men than
both sides have lost in three years of war.
The presidential campaign of 1864 finds a
nation truly divided against itself and
Lincoln seems doomed to defeat. The Union
armies have stalled and people have turned
against the war. Unexpectedly, “11th-hour”
victories sway the votes Lincoln’s way.
War is All Hell (1865)/The Better
Angels of Our Nature (1865)
July 19 at 1:30 p.m.
Sherman’s legendary “March to the Sea”
portends the war's end. In the stillness of
Appomattox Court House, Lee’s dramatic
surrender to Grant finally unfolds. Just five
days after victory, President Lincoln dies
by the hand of John Wilkes Booth and the
nation’s story is again forever changed.
This final episode surveys the fates of the
people who left their indelible marks on this
remarkable era.

The Dust Bowl
July 5 (Part 1) and
July 12 (Part 2) at 4:30 p.m.
It was the worst man-made ecological
disaster in American history, a decade-long
drought during the 1930s that nearly
swept away the breadbasket of the nation.
It encompassed 100 million acres in
Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado and
New Mexico. This was a time when the skies
withheld their rains, plagues of grasshoppers descended on parched fields, bewildered families huddled in dark rooms while
angry winds shook their homes and pillars
of dust choked out the mid-day sun. Vivid
interviews with 26 survivors of those hard
times, combined with dramatic photographs
and seldom seen movie footage, bring to life
stories of incredible human suffering and
equally incredible human perseverance. It is
also a morality tale about our relationship
to the land that sustains us – a lesson we
ignore at our peril.
Lewis and Clark: The Journey
of the Corps of Discovery
July 19 at 4 p.m. (Part 1) and
6 p.m. (Part 2)
Sent by President Thomas Jefferson in
1804 to find the fabled Northwest Passage,
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the
most important expedition in American history. This was a voyage of danger and discovery from St. Louis to the headwaters of
the Missouri River and over the Continental
Divide to the Pacific Ocean. It was the
United States’ first exploration of the West
and one of the nation’s most enduring
adventures. This is the remarkable story of
the entire Corps of Discovery, not just of
Lewis and Clark, but the young army men,

French-Canadian boatmen, Clark’s AfricanAmerican slave, and the Shoshone woman
named Sacagawea who brought along her
infant son. These many characters were
obviously important to the story, but the
spectacular land itself and the promise it
held was equally significant.
Prohibition
July 26 at 2 p.m. (Part 1),
4 p.m. (Part 2) and 6 p.m. (Part 3)
This enlightening film tells the story of
the rise, rule and fall of the 18th
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and
the era it encompassed. Prohibition was
intended to protect individuals, families, and
society at large from the devastating effects
of alcohol abuse. However, the result was
something completely different as the social
mores in place for a century fell to the wayside. Liquor consumption rocketed, music
became more provocative and skirts shortened. Prohibition caused the making and
selling of illicit alcohol a lucrative enterprise, prompting law abiding citizens to
become criminals and encouraging neighborhood gangs to expand into regional and
national syndicates. A mockery was made
of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Prohibition also fostered cynicism and
hypocrisy that eroded the social contract
across the country. The film raises vital,
relevant questions about means and ends,
individual rights and responsibilities, and
the proper role of government.

The National Mall is a landscape unlike
any other. Lined by some of the world’s
finest museums and dotted with monuments
to the country’s most revered figures, the
Mall draws millions of visitors each year.
Most of them have only a vague sense of the
struggles involved in creating this unique
space. Using a mixture of contemporary
and archival footage, state-of-the-art graphics
and fly-over aerials, this special traces the
Mall’s development. From its conception in
1791 by French-born artist Pierre L’Enfant
to its current status as one of the most
familiar and cherished icons of our democracy, the story of the Mall mirrors the story

creation and history of the remarkable
Statue of Liberty and what she represents
to all Americans. Narrated by David

Americans, including former New York governor Mario Cuomo, the late congresswoman Barbara Jordan and the late writers

On July 14th, 2015, the New Horizons
spacecraft, one of the most advanced stellar
vehicles ever built, is scheduled to fly by
Pluto and take the very first detailed
images of it.The hope is that the images will
provide a detailed look at this strange, icy
world and the realms beyond it at the very
edge of our solar system. Back on Earth, a
small group of planetary scientists who
have spent decades working on this mission
are eagerly awaiting the signal from New
Horizons as it approaches the planet. But
will the craft, which has been on a nine-year
journey of three billion miles, survive the
final, treacherous leg through a dangerous
field of debris? NOVA’s cameras will be
there capturing the moment. If all goes
well, Pluto’s rocky surface will be displayed
in unprecedented detail and humankind will
discover much more about other worlds at
the far limits of our galaxy.

detective story featuring new fossil finds
and the most up-to-date genetic research. It
also entails a startling revelation – we met
and mated with other types of human like
Neanderthals, Denisovans and Homo erectus.

ultimately thrive. Scientists are increasingly
finding that ours is not a pedigree species –

Sharks: The Big Five

Learn more about five of the ocean’s
biggest, most intimidating predators.
Viewers are taken deep into the waters off
the African coast for a look at sand tiger,
bull, hammerhead and great white sharks.
On November 12, 2014, an international
team of scientists and engineers guided the
spacecraft orbiter Rosetta, which launched
the lander Philae onto the volatile surface
of a comet as it zoomed around the sun at
67,000 kilometers per hour. This was an
unprecedented feat. In this program, that
team is followed during the last year of
Rosetta’s ten-year trajectory around the
universe – around Earth and Mars and
twice through the asteroid belt. In the
months before the landing, the team awakens Rosetta from three years of power-saving hibernation, manually navigates the
craft through unexplored areas of the solar
system, catches up to Comet 67P in a delicate cat-and-mouse orbiting dance and
releases a washing-machine-sized lander
onto the comet’s surface.

In this new fun, fast-paced series, best-selling
artist Eric Dowdle travels to destinations all across
North America in search of the true essence of
each place. His stops will include Plymouth,
Massachusetts, Charleston, South Carolina, San
Antonio, Texas and Portland, Oregon. Dowdle
meets the locals, explores their food and culture,
tours the attractions and, through some clever
“detective work,” uncovers unusual pieces of history and quirky unknown facts. His research culminates in one of his signature folk-art paintings
reflecting all of his experiences and the individuals he met along the way. Dowdle has created
more than 300 paintings and each year sells millions of copies of his prints and puzzles. Repeats

China is the first country in the world to classify internet addiction as a clinical disorder,
the cure for which is the subject of this intimate and sometimes jarring documentary. The
film follows the treatment of Chinese teenagers who prefer the virtual world over the real
one. Daxing Boot Camp is a military style anti-addiction program in Beijing designed for

teams during actual missions. Each episode
features a rescue by SAR volunteers who put
themselves in harm’s way for the lives of others. Whether it’s a volunteer K9 dog handler
looking for a lost child or a “body hunter”
scuba diving in a frozen river to recover a
drowning victim, everyone has a story to tell
about themselves and their rescues. In the
July 4th premiere episode, Whistler Search
and Rescue helicopter “long-lines” an injured
person who was snowmobiling off a steep
mountainside. Later, expert trackers Darcy
Fear and Bart Bjorkman race against time to
find “hidden hiker” Callie Chatten.
patients 13 to 18 years old. The fast-paced film portrays the three-month rehabilitation
process and the evolving diagnosis behind it. It starts in a video cafe where teenagers
blissfully play internet games and smoke cigarettes. It then cuts to the inside of the nofrills treatment facility where guards rouse the dreary-eyed visitors from cell-like rooms
for morning exercises. But is this militaristic treatment effective or advisable? Is it possible
to “cure” these young kids? On the topic of human rights, is it enough that the government
requires only the parents’ agreement in order to hold these children against their will?

The Churchmen

This critically-acclaimed and award-winning French drama follows five young men, all from
very different backgrounds and with different motivations, as they leave the lives they’ve known
in order to train for the priesthood at Paris’ historic Capuchin Seminary. For each of them,
there is a solitary and difficult journey ahead at this venerable institution, where discord
between the seminary’s head priest and an ambitious bishop could rock even the strongest of
the faithful. But before they begin their journeys in earnest, Father Fromenger (award-winner
Jean-Luc Bideau, Détectives), in reflecting on the Gospel of Luke, asks these questions of them:
“Who are you, truly? “What do seek at the Capuchin Seminary? “Are you really ready to
become a disciple of Jesus?” In French with English subtitles.
