Save the empty form to your computer first, then fill it in, resave it, and print it out. You may complete the application in either German or English (where text is required). Before filling in the study plan in the application form, read the attached information about course selection carefully. Once you have completed the application form, have it signed by your local Exchange Coordinator/International Office and send it within the deadline to our office. Please attach one passport photograph to the enclosed ‘Application form’ and one to the enclosed ‘Photo form‘. This photograph will be used for your student card. Students who come to ETH Zurich to conduct a research project or to prepare a thesis must include a confirmation letter or email from the professor who will act as their supervisor at ETH Zurich, as well as a letter of recommendation from the supervisor at their home university. ENTRY VISA and RESIDENCE PERMIT: Entry without visa: Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa to enter Switzerland: European Union and EFTA (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) countries, Malaysia, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Please read the attached information on residence permit carefully. Entry with visa only: Citizens of all other countries need a visa to enter Switzerland. All visa applications are processed by ETH Zurich. Please note that it takes at least 3 months to obtain a visa, so it is essential to start processing your visa application well in advance. Please read the attached visa guidelines carefully and complete the visa application form. Regardless of your nationality, you need to apply for a residence permit at your local Residents’ Registration Office (“Kreisbüro”) within 8 days of your arrival in Switzerland. You will need to present a valid passport (or identity card if you are a EU citizen), one passport photograph, proof of enrolment as an exchange student at ETH Zurich (which you will receive upon registration at ETH Zurich) and possibly your rental agreement. GERMAN COURSES: Teaching at Bachelor’s level is mostly in German and in English at Master’s level. During the semester, the joint Language Centre of the University and ETH Zurich offers semester courses in ‘German as a foreign language’ at all levels of proficiency. Two weeks before the semester commences, the Centre also runs intensive German courses at three levels. The intensive German course and ONE semester course are free of charge for exchange students (charges are made for photocopies and other course materials; a registration fee of CHF 100 is charged for the intensive German course). Please note that you must register online at www.sprachenzentrum.uzh.ch for these courses. Feb 2011 HEALTH INSURANCE: Since 1 January 1996, basic health insurance has been mandatory for all persons living in Switzerland. If your insurer is acknowledged by the Swiss authorities, you may be exempted from having to take out compulsory health insurance in Switzerland. If you are not exempted, which will most likely be the case, some Swiss insurance companies offer special packages for foreign students. For further information, see the ETH Zurich Health Insurance Advisory Service (KraBe): www.uzh.ch/rebeko/krabe.html or contact KraBe directly by email: krabe@websites.unizh.ch. ACCOMMODATION: Please see www.mobilitaet.ethz.ch/incomings/living/index_EN for information on accommodation in Zurich. Exchange students will receive information on applying for accommodation with their ETH acceptance letter. LIVING COSTS IN ZURICH: Please be aware that living costs in Switzerland are very high, and especially so in Zurich. The Immigration Authorities define CHF 1’750.- per month as the necessary financial means to support oneself. The actual amount needed per month might be slightly lower, this depends largely on your monthly rent. Finding cheap housing in Zurich is difficult. For more information see: http://www.rektorat.ethz.ch/students/finance/en1_costofliving.pdf ARRIVAL AND ENROLMENT AT ETH Zurich: After your arrival in Zurich, you must register at the ETH Zurich Student Exchange Office. You will receive further information before your arrival. You can search for courses according to different criteria, for example level of study, department, study programme, language of instruction, etc. If the course catalogue for the semester(s) you plan to stay at ETH Zurich is not yet online please use the course catalogue from the previous year to establish your study plan. It is possible to change this study plan later on, but only if you obtain the permission of your Departmental Exchange Coordinator both at ETH Zurich and at your home university! Generally, all courses which are open to regular ETH students are also open to exchange and visiting students. It is possible to combine courses from Bachelor and Master level, but you must have the necessary prerequisites to follow the chosen courses (please note: D-MTEC only accepts Master students since this department only offers Master courses). A few courses are restricted, e.g. in the number of participants. If this is the case, it is indicated in the course description. Please follow the instructions in the course description and/or contact the lecturer if you wish to participate in such a course. Exchange and visiting students must earn between 20 and 30 ECTS credits per semester (excluding language courses). As a general rule you have to take at least two thirds of your courses (i.e. ECTS credits, for example 14 out of 20 ECTS) in the department of enrolment. Furthermore I understand that I will need at least CHF 1750.- per month to comply with the policy of the Immigration Office of the Canton of Zurich. Should instruments and equipment belonging to ETH be damaged by students through negligence (e.g. in practical courses, during semester projects or a thesis), ETH Zurich can make the persons involved accountable for the damage costs. ETH Zurich therefore highly recommends its students to take out a personal liability insurance to cover any unforeseen risks. Such an insurance also covers risks outside of ETH Zurich where expensive damage may occur, e.g. in rented rooms or flats, involvement in accidental bodily injury, etc.). Likewise recommendable is a householder’s comprehensive insurance including theft/burglary, e.g. for laptops, bicycles, etc. Student’s signature: I herewith declare that I have duly read the above declarations on financial certification and personal liability insurance, that the information given in this application form is correct, and that I have included all the necessary documents. Further instructions regarding the residence permit will be given upon your registration at ETH Zurich. For the registration at ETH Zurich you will need a passport with a validity of at least 3 months beyond the planned duration of your stay. Please note: Although the Immigration Office of the Canton of Zurich does not require proof of sufficient financial means from exchange students at ETH Zurich, they define CHF 1750.- per month as the necessary financial means to support oneself. By signing the student exchange application form you certify that you have sufficient financial means available to you for the period of study for which you are applying at ETH Zurich. If you have further questions about your residence permit (i.e. entry to Schengen countries), please check the Migration Office of Canton Zurich website: http://www.migrationsamt.zh.ch/internet/ds/ma/de/home.html or contact directly a Swiss representative in your home country. IMPORTANT: Even though you do not need a visa to enter Switzerland, you are still obliged to obtain a residence permit as soon as you arrive. To do so, you must take along the following documents: a valid passport (or identity card if you are a EU citizen), one passport photograph, proof of enrolment at ETH Zurich and possibly your rental agreement. Procedure Your application for a student visa will be forwarded by ETH Zurich for processing to the responsible authorities in Switzerland. The Immigration Office reserves the right to ask you for additional documents and information. You will be notified by the ETH Zurich Student Exchange Office when your visa is ready for collection. Please note, that processing your visa might take up to 3 months. You yourself are responsible for indicating on the application form “Visa/Entry Permit” (question Nr. 9) the Swiss representation where you will be able to pick up your visa at all times (including semester breaks, holidays etc.). Please be aware that being accepted for an exchange programme at ETH Zurich does not automatically imply that you will be granted a visa by the Immigration Office.
