CIVIL 710 – ADVANCED STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS (15 Points, SC 2015) COURSE COORDINATOR: Assoc. Prof. Nawawi Chouw (Room TBA) Email: n.chouw@auckland.ac.nz TIMES: TBA PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE: This course is an advanced course in structural dynamics for both graduate research students and advanced consulting engineers. Although the subject by nature is mathematical, wherever possible a practical presentation of the material is implemented. ASSESSMENT: Research projects 30% Exam 70% COURSE OUTLINE: Brief review of Single Degree of Freedom Linear Behaviour Free vibration. Response to Harmonic loading. Calculation of damping. Response to impulsive loading and shock spectra. Response to a general dynamic loading. Generalized Single Degree of Freedom systems Linear Behaviour of Multi-degree of Freedom Structures Modeshapes and frequencies – properties and solution methods. Modal superposition and response spectrum analysis – modal combination methods. Floor vibrations, sources and control. Nonlinear Behaviour. Solution methods mainly restricted to material nonlinearities. Direct integration and the use of Rayleigh damping. Frequency and Laplace Domain Analysis Its use for the implementation of damping and the processing of data. Linear and Nonlinear Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction Dynamics of soil-foundation-structure systems and consequence of subsoil for structural responses under spatially uniform and nonuniform ground motions. TEXTS: Chopra, A.K. “Dynamics of Structures” Pearson Prentice-Hall 2007. Is highly recommended and is referred to in lectures. Clough and Penzien, “Dynamics of Structures”, 2nd Ed.McGraw-Hill 1993. This text has been used for the course for the last 20 years and will be referred to. Note: Not all topics will be covered.
