with Samsung Cloud Displays
A leading Canada-based bank provides retail and commercial banking, wealth management, insurance, investment banking services to
clients around the world. The Bank’s IT department supports computing infrastructure in 52 countries.
Challenge
• PCs at remote branches hard to
reach and manage
• Difficult to support computing for
home-based employees
Solution
• 2,500+ Samsung Cloud displays
(Model TC190 and TC240)
• Connected to Citrix XenDesktop
virtualization platform
Impact
Enabling New Operating Models with Server Based Computing
“As a leading financial services firm, we strive to use technology to enable more efficient
operating models and continually improve the customer experience,” says the Senior IT
Manager for server based computing. Over the past few years, the Bank has expanded
thin-computing initiatives in order to lower support costs and enable new ways of doing
business. Samsung Cloud displays have proven to be ideal end-clients for the initiatives.
Samsung Cloud displays are a whole new class of integrated monitors specially designed
for desktop virtualization and server-based computing. They have the thin/zero client
technology built right into the monitor, so there is no need for a separate PC or thin/zeroclient – just the Cloud display. With Cloud displays, employees can log in from any Cloud
display and access their authorized applications and data files from a slim, clutter-free and
energy-efficient monitor.
Supporting Remotely Located Branches
In order to provide personalized services to its high net worth clients, the Bank’s wealth
management group operates branch offices at various locations around the world. Some of
the branches are in remote locations that are difficult to support. “Each branch had desktop
PCs for the banking staff, but providing cost-effective IT support was a challenge,” says the
IT Manager. So the bank chose to transition the branches from traditional desktop PCs to
Samsung Cloud displays and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
•Branch computing centrally
managed for lower cost and higher
uptime
•Home-based model lowered costs
and improved employee morale

Reducing Support Costs for Branch Computing
With Cloud displays, branch staff have high-availability computing in a sleek, clutter-free
design that fits with the branch décor and customer expectations. For the IT organization,
Cloud displays dramatically lower support and travel costs while providing secure computer
access. The bank has already deployed over 600 Cloud displays and plans to transition the
remaining branches as part of the regular upgrade cycle. The Samsung Cloud displays have
been very well received by the staff and are much easier to support.
Driving Employee Satisfaction with Home-Based Computing
Attracting and retaining talented employees is critical to the Bank’s long term success. “With
our continued growth, it was apparent that enabling call center and other employees to
work remotely from home would expand the pool of highly qualified candidates and reduce
turnover,” says the IT Manager. However, equipping home-based employees with a desktop
PC or notebook was fraught with challenges including the cost of technical support to the
home, intermingling of personal and company data, and security.

IT Manager
Supporting home-based employees with Samsung Cloud displays is easy. The IT
department ships a “technology kit” which includes a Cloud display, a VoIP phone, and a
modem. The employee connects the cables and starts working within 15-30 minutes. The
Bank saves on office-related costs while providing secure, high-availability computing
without the high-cost support.
Employees enjoy the ability to work from home and minimize commuting time and costs.
Instead of a bulky desktop PC, they have a sleek, clutter-free Cloud display that takes up
very little space. The Bank has already enabled over 900 call center employees to work from
home. “Samsung Cloud displays enable a whole new operating model of being able to work
from home,” says the Senior IT Manager, “we just couldn’t have done it without the Samsung
Cloud displays.” The home-based computing initiative for call center employees has been so
successful that the IT organization has begun to offer the technology kit to other employees
as well.
Designing the Workspace of the Future with Cloud Displays
In addition to the sleek all-in-one design and reduced cable clutter, employees also appreciate
the lower electricity consumption of Cloud displays when compared to a traditional desktop
PC and a monitor. “We are reducing our energy footprint by at least 60% by using Cloud
displays,” says the IT Manager.
The bank is planning the workspace of the future and looking at models where employees
are not tied down to an office or cubicle, but free to move around and collaborate. Serverbased computing and Samsung Cloud displays will provide the technology infrastructure to
enable these workspaces.
