Prospectus 2014 Business Vocabulary Office English English for Management Financial & Management Accounting Introduction to Shipping Shipping Law Maritime Geography Students through this course are exposed to English business vocabulary. In this course, students become more familiar with the Business English vocabulary. Students will be able to practice, exercise and develop their language skills in terms of writing, reading and speaking. They will become familiar with the most common words and phrases used in the business environment, and will gain knowledge of business-related nouns, verbs and writing phrases. The objective of this module is to provide students with a better understanding of Office practice. Business letters and report writing are just some of the main components of this course. Students are also instructed on how to write agendas, take minutes and prepare reports. English for management allows students to improve their social and business English language skills. They will build skills in comprehension and verbal communication through a series of role playing exercises. Management Accounting is the process of identification, measurement, accumulation, analysis, preparation, interpretation, and communication of information that is used by management to plan, evaluate, and control within an entity and to assure appropriate use of an accountability for its resources (CIMA). This is what this module is about. It will enable students to analyse and provide financial-related information to the management of an organisation as well as to firms’ external parties (i.e. stakeholders). This introductory module is considered an important ‘opening’ to the maritime world. This course introduces major aspects and concepts of the shipping industry at a European and International level. Shipping law consists of a combination of customs, legislations, European and International treaties concerned with the rights and responsibilities of vessel ownership and operation. Students will be exposed to different areas of shipping law, covering the legal issues related to commercial shipping activities, vessel registration; shipbuilding; insurance and safety at sea. This module will enable students to gain familiarity with aspects like latitude and longitude; ports; weather; time and tides; waterways; geography of trade etc. 59
