Creating Hyperlinks.

Creating Hyperlinks.
The most efficient way of creating permanent hyperlinks is to use a digital object identifier (DOI). However,
not all articles have DOI’s so we have provided alternative instructions for exceptions from this process for
journals available via EBSCO, Ovid and Proquest below.
To hyperlink articles sing a DOI
Obtain the DOI and attach a DOI resolver link and the Cardiff University login to create one hyperlink.
The full link for the article consists of three parts (joined together) and would look something like this:
http://abc.cardiff.ac.uk/login?url= http://dx.doi.org/10.1111%2Fj.1365-2648.2008.04917.x
Cardiff University login
DOI resolver
DOI
To obtain a DOI where you don’t already have one search http://crossref.org




Go to http://crossref.org
Click on Guest Query form
Copy and paste the reference into the ‘Automatic parsing of a formatted reference’ box
Click Search
You should get a DOI link for the article e.g. Sanz C, Gautier JF, Hanaire H. Physical exercise for the
prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Metab. 2010 Nov;36(5):346-51
The DOI link is http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.diabet.2010.06.001
To make the link accessible off-campus you have to add the login part of the link in front of the DOI part of
the link http://abc.cardiff.ac.uk/login?url=
So the full link for this article would be:
http://abc.cardiff.ac.uk/login?url= http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.diabet.2010.06.001
If you can't find the article in crossref you may be able toget the DOI directly from the journal (via
ejournals) and just add the link http://dx.doi.org/ in front if not already present or you can use the
instructions below for alternative instructions.
Linking to journals available in EBSCO

So your link should look something like this:
http://abc.cardiff.ac.uk/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=rzh&AN=2011336
554&site=ehost-live
Linking to journals available in Ovid



Open the article record in Ovid
In the Article Tools box on the right, right click on Email jumpstart and Copy Link Location
Paste this hyperlink and add the Cardiff University login http://abc.cardiff.ac.uk/login?url= in front
So your link should look something like this:
http://abc.cardiff.ac.uk/login?url=http://ovidsp.tx.ovid.com/sp3.2.4a/ovidweb.cgi?&S=HMANFPKKBPDDLMGJNCCLCHGCIDOBAA00&Save+As+Jumpstart=Fulltext%7
c%26PAGE%3dfulltext%26AN%3d00006024-201101130-00001%26LSLINK%3d80%26D%3dovft
Linking to journals available in Proquest ABI/Inform

So your link should look like this:
http://abc.cardiff.ac.uk/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/497309885?accountid=9883
There is also a useful wiki created by Mike Johnson in SONMS that has instructions for a number of
other journal providers that are exceptions to the rule http://universit.tiddlyspot.com/
