a Friend Returns to PBS Hawaii JANUARY 2009 Aloha Kakou Leslie Wilcox, President & CEO Hau’oli Makahiki Hou! Happy New Year! PBS Hawaii is making good on our #1 New Year’s resolution. We’re adding to, not subtracting from, education. Thanks in large part to viewer contributions, we’re strengthening our learning-based programming at a time when Hawaii’s school institutions are experiencing funding cuts. We’re championing lifelong learning, music and the arts. Because of you, we’re delivering right into more than 420,000 island homes the kind of rich, creative content that can change lives. of the underserved, in addition to those in power. New Year’s Resolution #2? By mid-year, we’ll expand our website, www.pbshawaii.org, to reach farther and deeper. We want to make more content available to you online. And we want to make it easier for you to interact with us, helping to shape our content and direct our path. Our website screen will be as important as our television screen. The “public” in PBS Hawaii stands for people, not government funding. We’re proud to operate in the fresh air of independence, a rare locally owned media presence. And we’re pleased to present the voices Yes, the New Year brings many challenges to us as a nonprofit organization--including the economic downturn, this month’s digital transition, the ongoing struggle to attract viewers/users who now have hundreds of channels and unlimited websites to select from. I pick my battles. And I feel great about choosing this battle. 2009 offers more opportunities to do what only PBS Hawaii can do. We’re the only public television station in Hawaii. With a very lean staff, this nonprofit organization serves as a storyteller, a teacher, a travel guide, an explorer. We’re a theater, a library, a museum, a town hall. PBS Hawaii’s #3 New Year’s resolution? To assure you that your gift to PBS Hawaii is a gift to the entire community and to thank you for making things happen as part of the PBS Hawaii ‘ohana . Best wishes to you and yours in 2009! Mahalo, “ What’s Your Favorite PBS Hawaii Program? We Invite You to Share Favorites with the PBS Hawaii Community magazine@pbshawaii.org “My favorite PBS program is Frontline (“The Jesus Factor” absolutely rocked my world when I first saw it, and not in a good way), but in truth my fondest television memories revolve around The NewsHour, which, when I first started watching it thirty years ago, was called The McNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. Nobody, and I mean nobody was a more devout viewer of The McNeil/Lehrer NewsHour than my father, Dr. Fred Reppun. I doubt he ever missed a program. Every night at 6:25pm sharp, he would emerge from his den and gently lower himself into that old and comfy chair sitting in the corner of our TV room. If I was watching local TV before he came in the automatic response to his arrival would be to get up and change the channel to PBS, now PBS Hawaii. Together we listened closely to every guest, and from time to time, we would comment to each other about the issues raised in that night’s program. Sometimes I dozed off. He never did. As The NewsHour progressed we would notice the smells emanating from the kitchen as my sister prepared dinner. After McNeil or Lehrer delivered the news recap, we would both get up and join the rest of the family at the table, where the issues raised in the last hour would be discussed again. My father passed away in the mid 90s, but The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer is still my world from 6:30 to 7:30pm.” Josh Reppun Teacher, La Pietra, Hawaii School for Girls “I have always loved the story of a life, especially when it involves great talent. Where does greatness come from and how does it affect us all? In American Masters, some of those questions are asked and answered. Whether it’s Ahmet Ertegun’s amazing ability to find and nurture musical talent, Andy Warhol’s unlikely rise from obscurity to become a giant of the art world, or even Marvin Gaye’s sad demise, American Masters has to be my favorite PBS Hawaii show.” Paul Hosch Artist Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, announced plans to ‘turn on the power’ to its classic children’s series, The Electric Company, with production underway for the new PBS KIDS GO! show on the streets of New York City and a Newark, New Jersey soundstage. Targeting kids ages six to nine, and with funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Department of Education, today’s The Electric Company carries the same goal of the original series, combating the literacy crisis facing America’s second graders, but is re-energized to recognize the media-driven generation of today. The Electric Company Returns to PBS Hawaii S ure to spark a current of learning, the new version of The Electric Company is a multi-media literacy campaign charged with reducing the literacy gap between low and middle income families and advancing the idea that ‘reading is cool.’ Weekly episodes are slated to debut nationally in January 2009 on PBS KIDS GO!, the on-air and online destination designed entirely for early elementary school kids. The show will be supplemented with a richly interactive online environment at pbskidsgo.org and community-based outreach activities taking place in 20 cities across the country. “Hey you guys!!!!” The Electric Company will return to PBS Hawaii with a special 2-hour premiere on Monday, Jan. 19 at 3pm. Then tune in every Monday afternoon at 4:30pm beginning Jan. 26. reading is of Education and Research for Sesame Workshop. “We know that if struggling readers don’t get the literacy help they need by the end of second grade, they are in danger of never catching up. Children in lowincome families are particularly at risk, because they generally start school with a significantly lower vocabulary than those in middle or high income families. And without a strong vocabulary, it becomes increasingly “The literacy crisis today is as harder to read school materials pervasive and alarming as it was and succeed academically. So, in 1971 when we created the first our goal with The Electric Comversion of The Electric Company,” pany is to reach the kids who stated Scott Cameron, Director are struggling, and who might Through their programming, Sesame Workshop has always been committed to putting young children on a positive trajectory for learning. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, literacy still remains a critical educational need. First graders who cannot read at grade level have only a 1 in 10 chance of becoming proficient readers. think that reading isn’t cool or isn’t useful, and we hope to do that by creating compelling and high-quality television, web and outreach materials.” Through the talented production, writing and musical staff, The Electric Company is brought to life with a narrative story-line, music videos, sketch comedy, animation and short films. In a process that started over two years ago, Executive Producer Karen Fowler, envisioned a multimedia and outreach project and has brought an abundance of talent to create an appealing fresh program. TERRENCE QUINSAAT A Job Well Done J ust walking through the PBS Hawaii offices, you might hear someone ask, “Is Terrence around?” That question would often be answered with: “…..he’s at the library in Wahiawa and then he’s going to……” or “Terrence is on Kauai today at a workshop” or “He’s unpacking a shipment of books…..” The PBS Hawaii program Ready-To-Learn was launched six years ago, and for the past 5 years Terrence Quinsaat has been a one-man RTL traveling workshop. While assuming that responsibility, he’s also made a big contribution as a member of our award-winnning PBS Hawaii production team. Terrence is one of those people who can multi-task — successfully. Leslie Wilcox, PBS Hawaii President and CEO credits Terrence with taking initiative and responsibility. “He had one foot in statewide community outreach and the other foot in television production — and he walked this challenging path with grace, energy and good humor. He made special efforts to reach small schools in remote locations that were often overlooked by visiting speakers. For the past 5 years, Terrence Quinsaat has been a one-man RTL traveling workshop. Throughout his five years organizing Ready-To- Learn workshops, he worked continuously to update and improve his presentations. He availed himself of conferences that shared the latest findings on how children learn and where to access new resources. He found this work to be inspiring, and he inspired others,” said Wilcox. Since 2003 young children, parents and teachers throughout Hawaii attended 335 workshops, led by Terrence, focused on this comprehensive literacy learning program targeting preschool to second graders. We asked Terrence in the years to come what he would remember most about his Ready-ToLearn experience. “PBS Hawaii’s Ready-To-Learn service made an impact going beyond the television screen by visiting our communities statewide. The RTL service comforts me knowing that parents/caregivers (attendees) can trust our programs that encourage parents to use TV wisely and use our programs that teach. It was fun to entertain, it was great to inspire, but the gift to read PRICELESS.” For his dedication and commitment to Ready-to-Learn, Terrence received an award of excellence from PBS Hawaii CEO, Leslie Wilcox.
