2014 NIGHT AT THE CIRCUS
Tampa General Hospital Foundation’s 23rd Annual “Night at
the Circus” was a fantastic success! This year’s event was held
on January 2, 2014, at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, and the
event committee was chaired by Alexis Ciesla and Jennifer
Stauffer. As long-standing members of the committee, Alexis
and Jennifer were thrilled to serve their first year as co-chairs.
Aiming for both fun and efficiency, the chairs went to work
fine-tuning the Patrons’ Party and creating new sponsorship
opportunities. The ladies not only led a passionate committee,
but continued to raise awareness for Tampa General Hospital
and the TGH Foundation throughout the community.

all. Net proceeds of $222,000 from this year’s event will benefit
the Children’s Medical Center.
The TGH Foundation donated 1,200 tickets to local charities this
year so some of those less fortunate would have an opportunity
to attend and experience the thrill of the Ringling Bros. and
Barnum & Bailey® Circus – The Greatest Show on Earth®
Each year, $2,500 sponsors (and above) are invited to attend
the Patrons’ Party preceding the circus performance. This year,
500 guests feasted on delicious treats while the ringmaster and
circus performers roamed the room. Kids and adults alike were
wowed by jugglers and balloon twisters while they danced the

I am very pleased to report that the
Foundation completed a very successful
2013. Attendance at our events continues
to grow, as well as the funds we raise to
support the efforts of the hospital.
Of course, our success relies on the
ongoing efforts of both staff and
volunteers of the TGH Foundation, and
most importantly, you—our donors.
at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay. Our theme this year is “Come
Together – A Tribute to the Beatles.” Chairs Catherine ChristieZanghi, Gretchen Dominguez and Heidrun Divers promise us a
fun evening. Back for the second year will be our After Party for
young professionals and USF residents and fellows, chaired by
Michael Blasco and Noelle and Michael Muniz.
Thanks to the hard work of our mini-campaign chairs, Drew
Graham for transplant and Jon Yob and Lisa Pizarro-Yob for
palliative care, along with their physician champions Dr. Victor
Bowers and Dr. Howard Tuch and their hardworking committees,
we are very close to reaching both goals. If you have not already,
I hope that you will consider using the enclosed envelope and
join me in making a donation to one of the two campaigns.
As usual, the 2014 Night at the Circus continued to be a
marquee event and was sold out, as was our Annual Dinner.
Our co-chairs, Alexis Ciesla and Jennifer Stauffer, did an
outstanding job of ensuring that many children and adults
enjoyed a fun evening under “the big top.” Also, thanks to our
ticket coordinator, McIver Berner Grim, who made sure tickets
found their way to many deserving children. A big thank you goes
to our sponsors who donated tickets to local children’s charities.
This event would not be possible without our strong partnership
with Feld Entertainment.

16th Annual Golf Tournament
The theme for the 2014 TGH Foundation Annual Gala is “Come
Together – A Tribute to the Beatles.” This year’s event will be held
Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay and will be
chaired by Catherine Christie-Zanghi, Heidrun Divers and Gretchen
Dominguez. The Gala benefits Tampa General Hospital’s Fund for
the Future, helping TGH achieve its vision of being the leading
medical center in West Central Florida. Contributions ensure that our
dedicated physicians and patient care staff have all the necessary
tools to provide excellent medical care and to advance teaching,
research and service in our community. Skanska is the presenting
sponsor, and our media sponsor is the Tampa Bay Times.
The TGHF Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Monday,
October 20, 2014, at Old Memorial Golf Club. The Pairings Dinner
Party will be held the night before at the Tampa Yacht & Country
Club. The goal of this event is to raise awareness about Tampa
General Hospital’s many programs and services. Proceeds will
benefit both Tampa General Hospital and MORE HEALTH, Inc. –
Tampa General’s innovative health education and injury prevention
program, which provides a variety of health lessons to more than
200,000 students in Hillsborough and Pinellas County public and
private schools.
40th Annual Dinner
The Circus is Coming!
Tampa General Hospital Foundation’s Annual Dinner will be held on
Thursday, October 2, 2014, at Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club.
During the dinner, our Foundation chair will give her report on the
accomplishments and activities of the past year, and the chairman
of the Florida Health Sciences Center Board of Directors will give the
hospital report. The prestigious James M. “Red” McEwen recipient
will be announced.

Wheelchair Rugby Players Compete in International Tournament
Wheelchair rugby teams from Germany, Brazil, Alabama, Missouri,
Arizona and Georgia, as well as the TGH-sponsored Tampa
Generals, competed in the 22nd Annual Tampa International
Wheelchair Rugby Tournament.
court and attempt to cross over their opponent’s goal line. While
the offense is trying to advance the ball, the defensive team
tries to take the ball away from the opposing team. Players must
dribble or pass the ball every 10 seconds and must score within
a 40-second time limit. Players are
allowed to ram into one another,
often resulting in exciting hits and
players getting knocked over.
During this year’s three-day
tournament, the Tampa Generals
placed fourth out of eight teams,
said the team’s co-captain Justin
Stark, Director of the Florida Spinal
Cord Injury Resource Center, which
is located in the TGH Rehabilitation
Center.

many ways, said Justin. “You’re out
there competing and training and
you get better physically,” he said.

Operation Santa Brings Many Smiles
to TGH Pediatric Patients
We would like to send a big thank you to the
generous donors who helped make the holidays
a little brighter at Tampa General Hospital by
supporting Operation Santa! Over the holiday
season, Operation Santa raised over $16,000
to benefit Tampa General Hospital’s Children’s
Medical Center. In addition to the dollars raised,
many companies, organizations and individuals
came to visit the Children’s Medical Center
bearing gifts valued at $3,300.
Donations to Operation Santa allowed us to
bring Santa and all the excitement of the magical
holiday season to Tampa General for our littlest
patients who were too sick to be at home for the
holidays with their families. Operation Santa helps
stock the toy closet not only for Christmas, but
year-round, and provides a toy, a card and a smile
when it’s most needed.

Postpartum units recently received gift baskets full of
personal items from the non-profit organization High Risk
Hope.

its first delivery to TGH, High Risk Hope representatives
distributed bed rest baskets to long-term high-risk obstetrics
patients and NICU knapsacks to families with infants in the
Neonatal ICU.

the University of Iowa took time to visit Children’s Medical
Center patients, including Ariela Gomez.
The Wine Event
On Wednesday, November 13, 2013, NorthStar Bank— located in the Cube
at the Sykes building—hosted The Wine Event, to benefit the Palliative Care
campaign.
This first-of-its-kind event for the TGH Foundation drew over 120 people who
showed up to enter their favorite bottle into a competitive wine tasting.
The Wine Event featured 60 bottles mixed between red and white wine.
Each wine was placed in a brown bag and numbered. Participants sampled
each one and then voted for their favorite.
The winners each received a very nice prize package made up of all of the
wines that were entered in the competition. The event raised over $5,000 for
the Palliative Care program. The response was so good that the committee,
chaired by Chris Coram, Tom Loncar, Matt Wash and Stephanie Wiendl, is
already planning the next event.
