The Buddha
Two and a half millennia ago, a new religion was
born in India, generated from the ideas of a single
man, a mysterious Indian sage who famously
gained enlightenment while he sat under a large,
fig tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God or
his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a
human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain
and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that
others could find, too. This documentary by
award-winning filmmaker David Grubin tells the
story of his life and his journey.

Freshwater Seas The Great Lakes
The Great Lakes are one of the most unique
ecosystems on our planet. They have provided a seemingly endless supply of natural
resources that have helped transform the
United States into one of the most powerful
nations on Earth. But the story of the Great
Lakes over the last few centuries is one of
abuse and neglect, where humans have
exploited the region’s natural resources and
disregarded the long-term effects on the fragile ecosystem. This documentary from Detroit
Public TV examines the long-term effects.

Dirt! The Movie
This film delves into the fascinating history
of this lowly substance, explaining how four
billion years of evolution have created the
dirt that recycles our water, gives us food,
provides us shelter and is a source of medicine, beauty and culture. But people have
endangered this vital living resource with
destructive agriculture, mining and development that has yielded catastrophic results:
mass starvation, drought and floods. But as
the film shows, times are changing – brown
is the new green and dirt can be repaired.

What drove a company of American soldiers
to murder more than 300 unarmed
Vietnamese civilians? Were they just following orders? Or did they break under the
pressure of a misguided military strategy?
Today, as the U.S. once again finds itself
questioning the morality of actions taken in
the name of war, filmmaker Barak Goodman
focuses on the 1968 My Lai massacre, its
cover-up and the heroic soldiers who broke
rank to halt the atrocities.

Unconquered Seminoles
This award-winning film traces the history
and identity of Florida’s resilient Seminole
tribe, one deeply rooted in a pattern of
obstacle and challenge, survival and success.
Three wars in the 1800s sought to remove
the Seminoles from Florida, but they adapted to life in the Everglades and eventually
thrived while still preserving their cultural
traditions.

TV13 Update:
In our recent survey of Public TV 13 Partners, we found that about 60% of our Partners have Internet
access. We’re glad to hear that because we are always working to maintain and improve our Public TV 13
website, located at wnmutv.nmu.edu, and we’d like our Partners to make use of it. Here’s a sample of
what’s available online:
During last year’s conversion to digital broadcasts, many viewers were assisted by our monthly online DTV
updates. Post-transition, we continue to publish online updates when there is reception-related news –
especially technical difficulties, whether they occur over-the-air, via cable or satellite. When we get questions on an interesting topic via phone or email, we also use our online updates to share answers and useful tips. Chances are you will find some useful information if you check our online updates.
Our website is also the best place to get the most up-to-date program schedule information for our three
channels. About 80% of Partners surveyed indicated that they prefer to get their program information from
FanFare. We are happy to know that so many of you appreciate our guide, but since it is printed about two
weeks before the beginning of the month, schedule changes often occur after it goes to press. You will find
those late schedule updates at wnmutv.nmu.edu. We also have very limited space to present program
information in a 16-page printed guide, so you will find much more online, including complete listings for
all three channels presented in an interactive grid that can be viewed by day or week. The grid, on our
“Schedule” page, includes detailed descriptions that pop up with just a click, and if you find a program that
you don’t want to miss, you can arrange to have an email reminder sent directly to you. If you do miss a
broadcast, the grid will also tell you if the program airs again.
As editor of both FanFare and our website, I spend time after the guide goes to press putting together
comprehensive online program highlights. I usually highlight 90-100 programs each month with a paragraph and a graphic for each. On the main page of our site, you will find highlights for today and tomorrow,
and on the “Highlights” page you can scan featured programs for the entire month. One of the most useful
aspects of our online program information is “links.” When programs have a website associated with them,
we provide a link that will take you there directly. Many program sites present a wealth of background
information and interactive features.
Our newest and most exciting Public TV 13 web feature is still to come. Very soon, we’ll unveil a streaming
video player that will allow you to watch complete programs online via your high-speed Internet connection. The new player will feature both PBS programs and our local Public TV 13 productions. You’ll be able
to watch High School Bowl, Media Meet and our call-in programs – all available a few days after they are
broadcast. We will also provide a collection of our locally-produced history documentaries. We hope you
will find this new web feature to be a valuable addition to our broadcasting service.
If you haven’t visited lately, make sure to check out our Public TV 13 website. We think you’ll find it so useful you’ll want to make wnmutv.nmu.edu a daily stop on your Internet travels.
