Teacher, mentor, friend Ralph Bonds M y name is Ralph W. Bonds, Jr. and I’ve been a teacher for 32 years. I’ve been a teacher in the San Juan District since 1987 and at Encina High School since 1994. Being a ‘teacher’ has always been the most fulfilling experience of all. For me, teaching has allowed me to be creative and feel enthusiastic about my job. At Encina I have enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the departments of Foreign Language, Social Studies and ELL. To those valued colleagues I offer my thanks. I have been fortunate to have a great family and I also have been fortunate to have had great teachers and it was mainly my teachers who were the one’s who challenged me to think critically, to achieve and to give back to the community, however, my ‘approach’ to being a teacher comes from my family. My family has always been 4 Dedication the source of inspiration for me. You know how you have that special person in your family besides your grandparents and your parents? goal of being a teacher. It was as though the mud were a sky and enormous, imperfect stars moved across it as slowly as the actual stars cross heaven. The way, for example, they are willing to count anything or anyone: two pickles, one door to the room, eight dancers dressed as swans. I like the domesticity of addition— add two cups of milk and stir— the sense of plenty: six plums on the ground, three more falling from the tree. school of fish times fish, whose silver bodies breed beneath the shadow of a boat. Even subtraction is never loss, just addition somewhere else: five sparrows take away two, the two in someone else’s garden now. There’s an amplitude to long division, as it opens Chinese take-out box by paper box, inside every folded cookie a new fortune. And I never fail to be surprised by the gift of an odd remainder, footloose at the end: forty-seven divided by eleven equals four, with three remaining. from Poetry magazine Volume CLXXVI, Number 3, June 2000 Three boys beyond their mothers’ call, two Italians off to the sea, one sock that isn’t anywhere you look.
