Greetings to the El Paso Country
Club Membership
Like each and every country club or successful businesses
nationwide, El Paso Country Club has a Mission Statement. It
states the following:
The El Paso Country Club will diligently provide a
family oriented, first class club with amenities and
service that not only meet the expectations of our
present membership, but steadily attract new
members, while maintaining effective and efficient
administration.
I absolutely adore this statement. In a nutshell, it explains our
business to its fullest extent in what a country club should be and
how it should operate. There are so many key words of great
importance in our statement; Family Oriented, First Class
Amenities and Meeting Expectations, Attracting Future
Members, and last but not least Effective Management. Let us
look into these words more carefully.
In my May article, I mentioned how much we needed rain
and shortly after the newsletter was published, we received
much needed rainfall during the month. In this region, and
for the El Paso Country Club especially, water is a great
commodity. Your Board of Governors, Greens Committee,
Phelps and Andy are working diligently with the water
district to ensure that our golf course has the water it needs
to maintain its beauty and playability. A little extra help
from Mother Nature doesn’t hurt either! So, while you’re
out there enjoying the golf course, fix your ball marks plus
one and take a look around to appreciate how good it looks.
Summer is in full swing and your club is at its best! Make
plans to play a round of golf, play some tennis (and check out
the new Tennis Pro Shop!) or lounge by the pool. As the song
goes, it’s summertime and the livin’ is easy! Life couldn’t be
easier at El Paso Country Club.
Since day one when I took this position, the staff and I have
More to come,
remained focused on these goals. Today’s country clubs are all

about family oriented activities. Golf remains the focus but what
else can we offer to compliment golf? Junior Tennis and
Swimming Programs have become super important. As you can
tell, we offer the best programs in these departments. We have over 130 juniors in tennis and over 210 participants on our swim team. Our
summer camps for golf, tennis and swimming are just about full for both sessions. Mark and his staff always offer first class teachings with
lots of activities for our junior members.
In order to meet member expectations, our amenities need to be perfect and improved at all times. This is where the long range plan kicks
in with an Outdoor Patio, Fitness Center, Improved Golf Course, Improved Tennis Facility and Renovated Clubhouse. Our Board of
Governors has had these goals in mind since the start of my employment. Some have been addressed and improved, some are very near the
starting point and others are on radar within the foreseeable future. We realize the importance of improved amenities and our goal is very
clear in achieving these improvements.
The number one lesson that I learned in management from my ClubCorp days is that we are in the dues business. We must operate
efficiently in all departments and keep our expenses down as much as possible but it is the dues that fall straight down to the bottom line
and the more of it the better. We must meet our current member expectations in order to attract new members. The number one marketing
tool to attract new members remains the existing membership of each club. I am proud to say that our membership does a great job in
promoting our club and we sign up most of our new members through your referrals. I hope that you saw our new member board for the
month of May. It was impressive and let’s keep this positive momentum going.
I leave the effective management section for you to be the judge of it. I strongly believe that I have been able to establish a great
relationship with you to the extent that you would feel comfortable to speak with me with regards to all affairs of our club. My office door
remains open to you at all times.
Our Mission Statement remains clear. My staff and I are committed to delivering it word by word to you and your guests. Thank you for
your time.

Well summer is here and the heat came with it. The good side of this is the Bermuda fairways finally received their 60
degree nights and are coming on strong. We are continuing with our aerifying on the fairways. This allows us to break
up the hard pan in the clay soils, help alleviate and leach the salts out and provide oxygen to the new roots trying to
establish. I know it is a bit messy to play through but it will help us in the long run. We are trying to leave a clean spot
opposite of where we aerify for you to drop if you are inclined to.
Several of our fairways have areas that are always slow to come out of dormancy and the first to go into dormancy—
mainly due to poor soil conditions, salt build up and just plain old common Bermuda grass. These are our first target
areas and we will move on from there. Along with the fairways we will also be aerifiying the tees and collars. We will
keep aerifying for as long as it takes to get the course into shape.

Our shot of the month came to us from Mr. John Baillie, in the
form of an anonymous letter. The letter read“On Friday, 11 May 2012, on the 13 th hole, John Baillie sculled a
110 yard pitching wedge through the trap, over the lip, killing a
squirrel and into the hole for an eagle 3. At least that is the way
Tom and Ruby Bailey and his wife Nancy recall it. He (John) said it
was a perfect, high, one hop into the hole.”
Not two days later, another letter, written in eerily similar
handwriting, mysteriously appeared at the Shots of The Month
desk. The second letter read“On #9, from 80 yards out, John Ballie obviously hit a bird and
ricocheted into the hole for an eagle. Everyone knows gap wedges
go more than 80 yards. His (John’s) comment was, ‘see what fitted
clubs can do!’”
In an effort to curtail any further slanderous remarks about his golf
game, Mr. Baillie has put out a reward for any information
pertaining to the identity of our mystery writer. You can call his
hotline at 1(900) BOGEYSTOPPERS. Charges may apply.

Golfing on Monday, players experienced an unusual delay courtesy of the annual Balloon Fest.
Not surprisingly, lack of wind (which was the case on the morning of Memorial Day ) means
balloons can’t go anywhere but up or down resulting in balloons landing in obscure places all over
the Upper Valley, including the 4th and 9th fairways at El Paso Country Club. The team of Clark
Baker, Bruce Meyer, Nick Austin and Mike Norwich were able to assist a pilot in dragging the
gondola of the yellow balloon that ran out of propane to a safe location off of #4 and resume play
20 minutes later. At around the same time a multi-colored balloon bounced from the driving
range to the #9 where it was also dragged off the course. As coincidence would have it, it turns out
at exactly the same time Bruce was posing for his picture, Margaret Meyer was dealing with yet
another balloon that came down on their driveway!

The LPGA Tour instituted its new pace of play rules early in the 2004 season with an
announcement to its players. Along with the policy announcement to its players, the LPGA
Tour also offered six tips to its members for speeding up play. The tips were headlined "Fast
Play Makes Fast Friends," and they are great tips for all players to keep in mind:
1. Be ready to hit when it’s your turn to play! (Have club in hand)
2. Walk faster between shots
3. Eliminate lengthy discussions with your caddie - get the information and GO!
4. Think about the upcoming shot BEFORE you get to your ball
5. Reduce the length of time of your pre-shot routine
We played intercity at Dos
Lagos. We are still in First
Place by only 3 points. We
need to keep it up.
Winners from our club were
the following: Susy Byrum,
Nancy Baillie and Nancy
Bauchert.
6. Speak to your fellow competitors and encourage your group to stay in position before
being timed!

The past few weeks have been very busy for the Nine Hole Golf Association. We have
been so lucky with the beautiful weather, playing early to avoid any afternoon winds.
With summer upon us, we hope to have some new members join us- we sign in at 8:45,
tee off at 9, and finish around eleven, just in time for lunch. This gives you time to drop
off kids for swim team, tennis or just have that second cup of coffee. Please come give
us a whirl- this is fun, low impact golf with a great group of ladies, spanning all age
groups!
Circle Shot at Pro-President Tournament on April 19th- The 9 Hole golf group
provided coffee, beverages and goodies to entice the players to support our circle shot
on Hole 12. Chairman Ruth Erlich and assistant Carolyn Overley were out at the crack
of dawn, making sure all was ready for our players. Treasurer Bettie Tritton stayed all
day and watched the donations pile up. The men cheerfully donated and we cleared
approximately $1,000, which was donated to the First Tee charity, benefitting young
golfers.
APRIL 25th- Cristy Reagan was our generous sponsor for this tournament.

fter 4 weeks of continuous work, the renovation of the tennis clubhouse is coming to an end. Other than the women’s
bathroom and a few minor touch ups, we will be able to enjoy a beautiful facility by the time this newsletter is in your
hands. The renovation is going to be something! It’s such an exciting time to be part of this project and I can see and feel
the excitement from the membership on a daily basis, especially since the necessary funds to make the project a reality came in
part from the membership.
At this time, we are still very much in the process of collecting donations in order to keep improving the facilities. Please do not
hesitate to contact us if you want to be part of the project. Once again, I need to thank everyone that has donated time and/or
money to help complete the renovation.
Summer schedule for Junior Development will begin June 11 th and it will continue until school resumes in the fall of this year.
Summer camp is starting to fill up quickly so please do not wait until the last minute to sign your children up.

The 3RD ANNUAL MEN’S INVITATIONAL was a weekend filled with many fun events and plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy.
The tournament kicked off with a Women’s Scramble on Friday morning that was very well attended. Tournament match play
started that afternoon and we had a cookout and a DJ providing a fun environment. Saturday was a busy day as we started with
a kid’s only event that included many games and plenty of prizes. The Pro-Am in the afternoon was completely full and both pros
and amateurs had a great time. The event was won by the Lambeth brothers. All throughout the day, tournament matches went
on as the participants worked to make their way into the finals on Sunday. At the end, Artem Baradach, our defending champion
from Belarus via SMU held on and renewed his champion status. As for the doubles, Matej Stakne and Roman Stoisavljevic from
Croatia via NMSU came out on top in a thrilling final.
I want to thank all of the players for their participation and their kindness for helping with the Pro-Am. Many thanks to all of the
members that attended all or some of the events during the weekend and to those that auctioned for the players in the Pro-Am.
And of course, I must thank all of the sponsors for their kind support. We couldn’t put together such a great event without their
continuous support. Special thanks to the main sponsors, HUNT COMPANIES AND THE MATTRESS FIRM.

The swimming pool is open on weekends only in May. From June through the
first weekend after Labor Day, the swimming pool will be open Tuesday to
Sunday.
The swimming pool will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through
Sunday and on holidays, subject to weather or other adverse conditions. No
swimming will be allowed before or after these hours. The pool will be closed
every Monday for scheduled maintenance.
2.
A lifeguard must be present whenever the pool is in use.
3.
Guests may use the pool only when accompanied by a member, unless the
guest has received a courtesy card at the request of the member. The member
shall sign for his guest. Guest pool fees are $6.00 on weekdays, weekends, and
holidays for all persons regardless of age. Visiting out-of-town houseguests
will be accorded member-of-the-family pool privileges without payment of a
guest fee only when a courtesy card is issued by the office to the requesting
member.
4.
All guests must be registered with the pool lifeguard, and the fee for guest
privileges must be charged to the members account.
5.
Grandchildren of members under age of 15 will be extended pool privileges
only without payment of fee upon issuance of a courtesy card by the Club office
to the grandparent. Grandparents are responsible for any charges incurred by
the grandchildren. The above rule is not to be construed as a grant of pool
privileges to the adult son or daughter or the spouse of the adult son or daughter
