BIO 360: VERTEBRATE PHYSIOLOGY WINTER 2015 Instructor: Location & Time: Description: Dr. Katie Stumpf Contact: CSE 109; 682-‐1325; kstumpf@northland.edu Office hours: MW 9 – 11 am or by appointment Lecture: MWF 8 – 8:50 am (CSE 167) Lab Section 01: Th 10 -‐11:50 am (CSE 125); Lab Section 02: Th 2 -‐3:50 (CSE 125) The class can be summed up by the question "How do animals work"? We will learn about a wide range of physiological mechanisms including: respiration, circulation, digestion, excretion, and how all of these processes are integrated and affected by environment (e.g. altitude, water pressure, salinity, hydration, and temperature.) Textbooks: There are FOUR required textbooks for this class. A 3rd edition of Animal Physiology is available, but I will use the much less expensive 2nd edition for my lectures. Animal Physiology 2nd Ed; by Hill, Wyse, and Anderson A Student Handbook on Writing in Biology 3rd Ed; by Knisely PhysioEx 9.0: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology; Zao et al. The Phsyiology Coloring Book; Kapit, Macey, and Meisami Outcomes: At the end of this semester you will be able to: • Explain how structures and processes compliment physiological functions • Predict how animals will physiologically adapt to changing environmental conditions • Explain and understand basic physiological processes, including (but not limited to): digestion, respiration, circulation, water balance, thermal relationships, metabolism, and signal transduction (nerves and hormones). Course http://northlandcollegephysiology.wordpress.com/ Website: I will use the course website for all course-‐related communication, announcements, lecture and lab materials, and occasional links to useful and relevant supplemental materials. You are all REQUIRED to subscribe to this website via email. Class policies: Attendance -‐ I will not take attendance in lectures, but there will be unannounced pop quizzes in lecture. YOU WILL NOT be able to make these up. Attendance in lab is mandatory; there will be NO make up labs. In the event of an extreme emergency, you MUST notify me before lab. I expect that you come to all classes having read the assigned material and ready to start the lab, and I reserve the right to implement pop quizzes, pre-‐
lab quizzes and/or homework assignments if this expectation is not met. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure that the lab experiment works, so the more time you spend preparing for lab, the more you will get out of the time in the classroom. A note about extra credit: I do not give extra credit. Period. Do not come to me asking for a grade because you NEED it for [insert reason here]. If you are diligent with your work, you will earn your grade. If something depends on you getting a good grade, you should be motivated to do the work. Grading: BIO 360: VERTEBRATE PHYSIOLOGY WINTER 2015 Lecture Lab 3 Exams (100 pts each) 300 Lab reports (12 @ 15 pts ea) 180 Physiology in the News presentation 50 Final lab report 70 Pop quizzes and homework 50 Total (Lecture & lab) 650 Exams: Exams will cover material from lecture and in-‐class activities and will not be cumulative. You should expect a variety of questions – definitions, multiple choice, short answer, and essay. Make-‐up exams will be given only to those students who notify me BEFORE THE EXAM of unavoidable circumstances. A note about study guides: I do not give study guides. By this point in your college career, you should know how to identify what’s important from lecture and reading. I am available to discuss this and to help provide some guidance and there are several resources at the college. Physiology in the news: Each of you will read a paper from the primary literature that pertains to physiology, and will present a brief (~3-‐4 min) overview of that paper to the class. You should follow the format outlined in the chapter on presentations in Knisely. This will be worth a total of 50 points. I will pass around a sign-‐up sheet of topics and presentation dates during the second week of class; presentations will be during lab on THURSDAY FEBRUARY 12th. Laboratory: Attendance in labs is mandatory and absences, unless cleared with me BEFORE lab will result in a zero for that lab. If possible, make-‐up labs will be offered AT MY DISCRETION. You are responsible for coming prepared, including having read and printed the labs (available on the course website) and having all the necessary materials listed on that week’s lab handout. There will be several, unannounced pre-‐lab quizzes during the first 10 min of some labs. You will not be able to make these up, so come to lab ON TIME. Laboratory exercises are designed to stimulate you to think for yourself; therefore questions may not always be answered directly. Do NOT get discouraged! You probably already know the answer from lecture or it may be answered on the lab handout. Lab reports: You will write 12 weekly lab reports, worth 15 points each, that will be due at the beginning of the following lab period or the date listed on the lab protocol. For the PhysioEx simulation labs, your lab report will be the questions at the end of the lab in your manual. All lab reports MUST be typed and submitted to the dropittome website by the due date and time. I will not accept handwritten lab reports. Final lab report: You will be turning in one full lab report – Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Literature Cited, worth a total of 70 points. This will be due on THURSDAY April 2nd. You can pick any of the labs from the semester for this final lab report, keeping in mind that you must complete ALL sections of the lab, including data analysis. Be sure to keep detailed notes and data for all labs!! Expecta-‐ tions: BIO 360: VERTEBRATE PHYSIOLOGY WINTER 2015 You are expected to be respectful in class; this includes arriving on time for all classes and giving the speaker your full attention. Cell phone use in class is disrespectful. I will ask you to leave class if you behave disrespectfully towards anyone in class. Homework: I strongly prefer that all coursework be submitted electronically using the website at: http://www.dropitto.me/drstumpf Instructions for uploading your homework are on the course website; the password is northlandbio. Important All due dates, exam dates, and other important information is available on the course Dates: calendar here: http://northlandcollegephysiology.wordpress.com/homework-‐and-‐important-‐dates/ Academic Cheating or plagiarism in lecture or laboratory will result in a grade of F for the class. dishonesty: Plagiarism is using someone else's work as your own, even if you have changed some of the wording. Your work MUST be in your own words. Students in need of academic or medical accommodation should contact Kathleen Skoraczewski,Campus Counselor, ext. 1369, Ponzio Center Rm. 202B, kskoraczewski@northland.edu. This syllabus is subject to change. If any changes occur, I will announce them in class and/or send out an email.
