“SmartWork” Online Problem Sets
Ten (10) Problem Set assignments using the online SmartWork system are listed after the readings (and
online). These problem sets alone are not sufficient preparation for the exams but rather are intended to
give you regular feedback and spot-check your grasp of the material.
A number of additional problems are also listed with the reading assignments for your own practice.
These will not be collected or graded, but they are great preparation for the exams. I strongly encourage
you to do these as well.
Exams
Midterms:
Exam #1 3/7 (Mon in class + take home due Wed 3/9)
Exam #2 3/22 (Tue, take home only due Fri 4/25)
Exam #3 4/22 (Fri in class + take home due Mon 4/25)
Final Exam:
Thursday, May 12th, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm (MBH 220)
Exam conflicts: For scheduling conflicts due to athletics or other known conflicts notify me before the
exam to reschedule it for another time. It is your responsibility to know your schedule. If you miss an
exam due to a serious illness or other sudden emergency, notify me as soon as possible (via email is
fine). I will never grant exam exceptions because of other exams, papers, or activities due on the same
day. Only a Dean’s Excuse is acceptable for rescheduling the final exam.
Honor Code
The in-class exams must be your work alone without aid of any kind. The take home exam portions are
open book and open notes, but you must do your own work without discussing it with other students
(you may ask me questions). On Problem Sets and Lab Reports, you may work with other students, as
long as the work you turn in is your own. Copying someone else’s work or answers is an Honor Code
violation with very serious consequences.
Reading Assignments and UNGRADED Practice Problems
Readings should be completed before we cover each topic in lecture. These problems will NOT be
collected or graded in any way. HOWEVER, WORKING PROBLEMS IS THE SINGLE BEST
WAY TO LEARN THE MATERIAL AND PREPARE FOR THE EXAMS. The “Core” problems
cover the main concepts and ideas. The “More” problems are generally repetitive to give you more
practice—use your own judgement about skipping these problems if you truly understand them.
Students frequently find it much easier to look at problems and say they could do them, than they
find actually doing them on an exam. If you have difficulty with these exercises, please do not wait
until the exams to come in to see me for assistance.

SmartWork Online Problem Sets
Create an account by following the "First Time User" instructions at http://smartwork.wwnorton.com
You will need:
1. Any valid email address
2. The enrollment key for this course: GILBERT1365 (case-sensitive)
3. A registration code from W.W. Norton (comes with book or can be purchased separately).
These problem sets are due by 8:00 am on the date indicated below—basically the night before, but I
want to allow the “night owls” a fair chance. This is typically on Tuesday morning prior to discussion,
but you can certainly sumbit them earlier. Please do not rely solely on these problems to keep up with
the course material as they do not cover every topic in detail. If you have trouble, please come see me
for assistance.
For each question you can attempt to answer it up to ten (10) times, with a 10 % deduction for each
incorrect response (prorated for partial credit). Working together with other students is allowed.
Copying someone else’s answers is a serious honor code violation (and will not help you on the
exams—unless you plan to cheat then too!?). Also note that SmartWork will often CHANGE the
numbers slightly for each user. These numbers will often differ slightly from those listed for the “same”
problem in the textbook. Please be sure to use the actual numbers listed in each online problem for your
work. This makes dimensional analysis an even more helpful technique to use! Some longer problems
require you to scroll down to see additional parts of the question. Also, be careful with details such as 0
(zero) vs. O (letter “oh”), they are not the same.
