Annual Report 2014 Helping Others Help Themselves T HE Y E A R IN RE V IE W: 2 014 We are in the midst of a revolution of sorts. There is a need for a large-scale civil rights movement for people with disabilities and their families. These are society’s most vulnerable members and it is the mark of a progressive society that its citizens recognize that fact and work to make life as full and meaningful for the disabled as it is for everyone else. This will require greater funding and awareness and initiatives on the part of governments, businesses, schools, and churches to make facilities and programs accessible to both the disabled and their families. DDM has its role to play. We are providing residential services for adults with developmental disabilities (both intellectual and physical)— people who will always need some guidance and support for the rest of their lives. Some need more help than others and so we have a program that meets the needs of people at various levels along the disability spectrum. Many of our residents have only distant family members or no family at all. For all our residents DDM has become “home” or at least their second “home.” DDM has a number of partners that make our ministry possible. We collaborate with other groups that work with the disabled including Wesley Glen Ministries of Macon, Camp Twin Lakes of Rutledge, and the Atlanta Food Bank. We have business partners like Belk’s and Kroger who provide fund-raising opportunities for DDM. And we have a number of volunteers who help us with fund raisers, camp, home improvements, and special events for the residents. We utilize the monitoring service of state agencies like the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and the Department of Community Health, and our accrediting organization, CARF. Speaking of accreditation, DDM received a three year renewal of our credentials following the visit of a CARF team in the summer of 2014. Some of their comments were as follows: William Neal, President/CEO Our occupancy rate is the highest it has been in a number of years and we hope to fill most of our remaining vacancies during 2015. In 2014 we added a new home in Rome (the Paul Home) and we have purchased a new home in Jasper allowing us to expand our ministry there (the Griffith Home). The only thing that keeps us from expanding even more is the lack of money to build and operate new homes. The needs continue to be great with thousands of Georgians on a “waiting list” for Medicaid waivers. In addition to working with adults, DDM seeks to serve families who have children with developmental disabilities. Each year we provide special family retreats that allow these families to come together with other families facing similar circumstances. The fellowship that takes place in these settings is absolutely inspiring as the parents laugh and cry together, share resources, and become great friends. For many of these families, it is the closest thing to a vacation they will ever have. It is a place where their children are accepted the way they are and the entire family is treated with great love and respect and understanding by the wonderful DDM staff and volunteers. DDM relates to churches that want to minister to these special families. Through our conferences and workshops we provide resources to churches that want to begin new ministries or grow the ones they already have for people with disabilities. We rely upon our partnering churches to help us provide not only for our DDM residents, but also other special needs families in need. Elsewhere in this report you 2 will see a list of congregations throughout Georgia that are committed to this ministry. We are very appreciative. • The warm and caring spirit of all members of staff and management set a welcoming environment to both the staff and persons served. • Direct support staff members are very knowledgeable about the persons served, show great care and compassion, and ensure that the quality of life of the persons served is the highest possible. • The homes are well maintained, located in pleasant areas, and decorated nicely. The bedrooms of the persons served are decorated to the taste and interests of the persons served. • Family members and community members have many good things to say about DDM. Many expressed sincere gratitude for the hard work done by its direct support staff and the overall organization. For further information, please check our website, www. ddmga.org, which went through a major re-design in 2014. We also have a bi-monthly newsletter that is sent by email to all who request to be placed on our mailing list. Email blasts are sent at various times of the year to help make our friends aware of needs and opportunities. The DDM Staff, Trustees, and Residents are forever grateful to all those friends who make this ministry possible. Many of their names are listed elsewhere in this report. (Ray) Johnson retired at the end of August, 2014, after more than 15 years service with DDM. At the time of his retirement he was vice president and director of operations and the senior member of the administrative team, having served with DDM since it became an independent agency, separate from Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Services, Inc. Ray handled most of the agency’s business matters in those early days and continued to manage DDM’s facilities and vehicle fleet as well as overseeing the agency’s IT needs. In addition to his job responsibilities, he was always volunteering to help where needed, notably the special family retreats and Opening New Worlds conferences. and the University of Georgia, where he earned his Ph.D degree. Before joining the DDM staff he served on the staffs of several Georgia Baptist churches in Cornelia and Athens and was director of the Education Division of the Georgia Baptist Convention. He and his wife, Beverly, are the parents of two grown daughters, Kim and Jennifer. They are active members of Johns Creek Baptist Church where Ray has served as deacon chair, choir member, and Sunday School teacher. “Ray Johnson was a respected colleague and team player who provided much guidance and expertise to DDM over a long period of time. He is respected and appreciated by all the rest of the staff and his day to day presence among us will be missed,” said William Neal, DDM president. Ray is a Florida native who attended Stetson University, New Orleans Baptist Seminary, the University of North Carolina, 10 The Johnsons will continue to make Norcross their retirement home and hope to do a lot of travel and maintain an active schedule as grandparents. And hopefully, DDM will be able to keep him on its active volunteer list. DDM wishes all the best to this wonderful and faithful staff member and friend. Raymond Johnson Vice President and Director of Operations At its August, 2014 meeting, the DDM trustees honored Ray Johnson with a retirement luncheon and announced that the Old Lantern Home in Lithonia will be re-named in his honor as the Ray Johnson Home. DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MINISTRIES • A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 4 S P E C I A L N E E D S F A M I LY R E T R E AT Each year the Church Services Division of DDM sponsors a Special Needs Family Retreat for families with special needs kids. In 2014 two retreats were held—one for families with younger children at Epworth By The Sea, St. Simons Island; and the other for families with older children at Camp Twin Lakes near Winder. These families enjoyed the time away together, experiencing wonderful fellowship with other families in similar circumstances and they picked up helpful information and inspiration provided through the various seminars. The following letter from a grateful family is typical of many responses from those who participated in the retreats: “My family and I recently attended the DDM special family retreat at Epworth by the Sea in St. Simons. We really appreciate the opportunity you provided for us. It is with great gratitude that we thank you for being one of the chosen families. The grounds of the facility are beautiful and we enjoyed touring them and the chapel. We all said a prayer in the chapel on the kneeling bench. The area is very conducive for relaxation and fellowship. It was great that the parents had small group meetings while the children learned Bible stories and participated in play and craft activities. My children really had a great time and brought home ANNUAL REPORT 2014 • lots of artwork they did over the weekend. My husband and I enjoyed the small group meetings where we were able to interact with the other parents. We learned of their struggles and were able to offer suggestions for each other in raising a special needs child. . . It alleviates the stress of a vacation or entertaining the family since the weekend and activities were already planned for us. We also had free time when we could explore the area or relax in the room. We LOVED the dolphin cruise and it was very fun to watch the dolphins and learn about other sea creatures. Since my husband and I do not spend time without kids much (or at all at times) we really appreciate the parents’ night out. I know our kids were well cared for and had fun swimming and watching movies that night. The family worship time was so much fun! It was a relaxed and informal service that the children led. My special needs daughter changed costumes several times. She was precious and had a great time! I am looking forward to reading the book you gave us entitled Just the Way I AmGod’s Good Design in Disability. Thank you for caring about and loving special needs children and their families. I pray that your ministry continues to be blessed so that you may bless others in this way.” HELPING OTHERS HELP THEMSELVES 11 IN GR AT E F UL REC OGNI T ION Helping Hands Award 2014 Roger Sundy The Helping Hands Award is the highest honor that DDM can bestow and represents a lifetime achievement by an individual who has made a difference among people with disabilities. The 2014 winner of this award was Mr. Roger Sundy, a retired engineer and former chair of the DDM Board of Trustees. Roger is familiar with all aspects of the DDM ministry. In addition to serving as a trustee, he was the father of a DDM resident. A long time member of Oakhurst Baptist Church in Decatur, he was instrumental in that church’s investment in a new group home for developmentally disabled men that became the Hess Drive Home in Avondale Estates. Ever since, Roger has been a strong volunteer for that home and has taught a Sunday School Class at Oakhurst for adults with DD. He has also been a spokesperson in the statewide effort to support people with disabilities. A graduate of Georgia Tech, Roger and his wife, Neomia, are the parents of two children and are also grandparents. They live in Pine Mountain and maintain a residence in Decatur. Neomia has also been an involved parent and currently serves on the DDM Board of Trustees. Sundy joins the ranks of our previous recipients: James N. Griffith, Richard Davis, Howard Chatham, Denny Spear, Bruce Burt, Frances Stokes, Varion Spear, and Raymond Johnson. Mary Frances Stokes Direct Care Staff Award Matt Pogue Each year an outstanding direct care staff member is honored for their service to the DDM residents. This award is named for Frances Stokes, who served for many years as DDM’s program director. The 2014 recipient was Matt Pogue, coordinator for the Cherokee Home in Canton. Matt has served with DDM since 2012. In addition to being a great administrator and caregiver, Matt has been involved in training new DDM staff members. A native of Stockbridge, Matt is a graduate of Point University and the McAfee School of Theology, Mercer University, where he earned the Master of Divinity degree. He and his wife, Emily, live in Cumming and are members of Parkway Baptist Church in Duluth. Bill Stokes Volunteer of the Year Award Henry Dube 12 Henry Dube, a retired AT&T employee, was recipient of the 2014 Bill Stokes Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is named for the man who faithfully volunteered his services in a number of capacities during the many years that his wife, Frances, served as program director for DDM. Henry has served in a number of volunteer capacities with DDM, most notably with the DDM Business Office, providing a day each week to help with administrative work. He has also provided child care at DDM’s Special Needs Family Retreats at St. Simons Island and served with volunteer work groups doing repair work at DDM homes. He and his wife, Bonnie, live in Suwanee, and are active members of Johns Creek Baptist Church where they sing in the choir and serve as community leaders. The Dubes have two grown children and three grandchildren. DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MINISTRIES • A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 4 2 014 B OA RD OF T RUS T EES Dr. Jimmy B. But several times each year residents from all the homes are invited to participate in state-wide events that bring the DDM family together. The most popular of those events is the Christmas Weekend in Atlanta each December. It consists of the Christmas Banquet on Friday evening for residents, staff, and their families, and a Christmas party for the residents on Saturday. In 2014 those events were held at Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain. Many people volunteered to help with the program, including a group 14 from Tucker First Baptist Church who provide Christmas stockings each year for all the residents. In the Spring DDM residents enjoyed a trip to a night game for the Gwinnett Braves which included a picnic at the stadium. In the fall they returned to beautiful Camp Twin Lakes near Rutledge for their annual camp. Many donors from across the state contributed gifts to make this special week possible. Activities included swimming, boating, fishing, basketball, golf, arts and crafts, and even a zip line! A Residents Council is composed of representatives from throughout the State and meets regularly with the staff to plan for these special activities. Mr. Aaron Bearden of the Jasper Home served as chair during 2014.
