Missouri FIRST® Tech Challenge Qualifier 6 – University of Missouri – Kansas City Saturday, January 24, 2015 We are happy to return to UMKC for our third year of FTC. The exciting news is increasing this event to 40 teams! We will run 3 fields and it is a single division event. We always have to worry about weather during the FTC season. Our events are only cancelled by the venue hosts. Therefore, if UMKC determines weather conditions to be unsafe, they may cancel our event. If they say it’s OK, then our event is a go. Of course, you must determine if travel conditions are safe along your route. Our cancellation policy is posted on our website www.stlfirst.org and here. Events for our region are booked and scheduled approximately a year in advance. Our policy is that no event is ever rescheduled. Event managers have the authority to cancel an event if their facility determines conditions to be unsafe. This policy would apply to inclement weather or any other public safety issue. If an event is not cancelled, it is up to the discretion of the parents and coach to determine if they will attend. No refunds will be given in this situation. Please check in with judge queuing (Located next to registration in the Swinney lobby) for an escort to your judging location. The detailed map on page 12 shows the route between the parking garage, Swinney Recreation Center and the Atterbury Student Success Center. The interior map on Page 13 is two years old. Three fields will be used for competition this year. Hotel Special (attached to email): Hampton Suites Plaza Kansas City 4600 Summit Kansas City, MO 64112 Only 1 ½ miles from competition site See attachment to coach email More Hotels http://www.hotels-rates.com/hotels/locations/Kansas_City/MO/usa/1147/#vip&notus=UMKC When to be there The facility will open for teams to start unloading and setting up at 7:30 AM. Teams will not be admitted into the gym to begin unpacking their robots and setting up their pit area until 7:30 AM. Early arrivals can stay warm in the concession area located in the gym’s lobby. At 7:30 kids can start setting up while 1 coach heads to check-in. It should work well to just drop kids and robots at Swinney and head to the parking garage. 2 Coach Check-in All coaches please report to Registration Table in the front hallway (judging hallway) from 7:308:00 AM to register your teams. We cannot generate match schedules until all teams are registered. Please note that if you are scheduled for an 8:15 AM inspection or judging, you should register earlier. If you experience traffic or delays, please do not panic, simply call our hotline at 314-401-1800 and let us know the status of your arrival. At check-in, the volunteers will ask if you are ready for competition. This is a way to identify teams that may need help before passing inspections. Please let us know if we can help! Upon check-in, you will receive a team packet. It will include a copy of your schedule, programs, coach/driver/media buttons and Cascade Effect participation pins (first event only). You will need to turn in team roster and engineering notebooks. More details below. NEW – we are asking for a team photo at check-in Team Roster/Consent Forms A consent and release form is needed for every student, coach, mentor and volunteer participating in the event. Your STIMS roster is proof of completed forms. If you have already competed at a MO qualifier this season and your roster hasn’t changed, we do not need anything turned in. Please complete the ATTACHED cover sheet and staple to the STIMS roster and any manual team consent forms. FAQ for roster is at http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/team-member-registration-faq Engineering Notebooks Please turn in your engineering notebooks at registration. This will enable the judges to review the materials before they begin the session scheduled for each team. They will be returned to you during the qualifying rounds of competition. Don’t leave without it! Engineering notebooks can be handwritten or a printed version of an electronic notebook. All versions should have 3 sections – team info, engineering and business plan. Engineering notebooks should include the Bill of Materials. Another separate copy is needed for inspection. 3 Food No outside food is allowed. No food or drinks in the gym. The UMKC Cafeteria (Hours 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.), located in the Student Success Center) Offers an all you can eat salad bar, soups, deli bar, classic entrees, grill, brick-oven pizza, desserts, beverages & more. The price is $7.75 per person. Concessions, in the lobby of Swinney’s Gymnasium will offer normal concession items throughout the day. Breakfast pastries and coffee will be available in the morning Set up your Pit Table Each team will be provided with one 8 foot table and chairs. Please do not remove or block the table numbers from your pit table as they help the judges, queuing staff, and other event officials find you. Since we have over 400 team members signed up, we may run into issues with pit space. Please limit the number of people at your pit to 12 and be respectful of the other teams’ space. Additional members and supporters are welcome to observe from the stands. Bring a tub or trash bag for storing coats as there is no coat check available. You are welcome to bring items to exchange with other teams. Power Availability in the Pits There is no power to the individual tables. Please charge everything before coming to the venue. There will be supervised charging stations available in the pit area. Be sure to label your robotics related items that might need to be charged. Don’t forget to pick your items up at the end of the day! WiFi WiFi is not available at this venue. Practice Field One practice field will be provided for teams to use. Please be respectful of others if a line forms. We will have a volunteer staffing this area and may have to limit the time if the need arises. Safety Notes Safety glasses must be worn at all times. This rule is of paramount importance and will be vigorously enforced. Each team must bring enough safety glasses for all members & visitors. Do not leave valuables unattended. This event is open to the public and we encourage others to come and see what the students have done. Use common sense. Encourage your students to do the same. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. 4 Before Coming to the Competition Check the list http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/ftc/get-ready-for-competition Decide if you want to be considered for the Control Award. Apply for the Control Award by filling out the Control Award Content Sheet (pages 43-45 in Game Manual, Part 1). Control Components must be documented in the Engineering Notebook. Coach can nominate 10th and 11th grade students for the Dean’s List. Deadline is 2 weeks prior to the qualifier. That means nominations can be submitted until 10:59 pm central time on Tuesday, January 13th for this event. http://www.usfirst.org/sites/default/files/uploadedFiles/Robotics_Programs/FTC/Team_Resour ces/Deans_List_Submission_Instructions.pdf Promote and Compass Awards will only be judged at the Missouri Championship. Entries will be submitted online. Judging Notes Before competition use the self-reflection sheet http://www.usfirst.org/sites/default/files/uploadedImages/Robotics_Programs/FTC/FTC_Docu ments_and_Updates/Team_Judging_Self-Reflection.pdf Your judging time is more important than your inspection time. Judging times need to be adhered to in order to get through all the teams. Please arrive 5 minutes early so that you are ready for the judges. If you miss your scheduled inspection time, you can go to the open station and get inspected. Hardware and Software Inspection Notes To ease congestion at the inspection table, we have assigned team times (schedule attached). All Bluetooth NXT devices must be turned off at competition. You may use USB in pits. Please spend some time reviewing the robot self- inspection checklist http://www.usfirst.org/sites/default/files/uploadedFiles/Robotics_Programs/FTC/Team_Resour ces/Team_Robot_Self_Inspection_Checklist.pdf A Bill of Materials is needed at the time of inspection. Make two copies – one for Engineering notebook and one for inspection. SAMOSTAT and Program Chooser must be loaded on your NXT in order to pass software inspection. Software inspection will be comprised of a sample match, during which the inspectors check that your NXT is running the current version of software and that it performs as required during the various stages of game play. Please follow the best practices for wiring your Samantha and power leads, http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/ftc/team-resources 5 Teams Participating at the UMKC Qualifier: Team # 3409 3505 4587 5190 5422 5985 6547 6751 7095 7209 7357 7359 7408 7507 7532 8136 8157 8177 8373 8407 8412 8648 8819 8828 8928 8978 8979 9034 9102 9103 9104 9105 9106 9107 9108 9109 9392 9599 9623 9688 Team Name Astromechs Cadet Bot Crew The Red Hot Techie Peppers Technoramic HorsePower Marsupial Tech Caps Cobalt Colts Robo Vikings S.T.O.R.M.
