MEC Weekly Update June 6, 2014 Fellow Pilots of JetBlue, This week, your Master Executive Council convened in Boston for our first official MEC meeting. The agenda included guest speakers Capt. Scott Stratton, MEC chair for FedEx; our executive vice president, Capt. Paul Stewart from Alaska; and MEC National Affairs Steering Committee member Capt. Mike DeSantis. They were invited to provide us a thorough history on each of their respective airlines’ challenges and successes while sharing best practices and invaluable advice on how they obtained their CBAs. This is one of the great advantages of being in an international union—we are able to learn about and adapt what works best for other pilot groups, which will only help us achieve our goals. We also discussed the following important topics while in Boston:  Interim ALPA Committees. We laid the groundwork for setting up essential interim committees that we hope will be implemented in the next few weeks. Interim committee chairs will be appointed and volunteers will be able to apply online in the very near future to serve on a permanent committee. Once we hold elections for permanent pilot representatives, a Contract Study Committee and many others will be stood up. More detailed information will be available on our website in the coming weeks.  Representational Models. We discussed representational models at length and we will send it to the pilots for your consideration though a ratification vote. We will also provide you with educational materials so you will be able to make an educated and informed decision. To be clear, the pilot group itself will have the final say on whether we have a traditional domicile representation model, a seniority block model, or a hybrid model that includes both domicile and seniority representation.  Membership Drive. Our membership drive is well ahead of schedule, with approximately 1,841 pilots signing up for membership—and that number is growing stronger every day. FLL is above 85 percent! We know there are still lots of questions concerning the advantages of applying for membership. Soon, we will have a public website with extensive Q&A on ALPA membership. Remember to discuss with your pilot peers who haven’t yet joined that they will not be able to vote for their permanent reps, take surveys, attend meetings, use aeromedical support, or volunteer for a committee until they do. We do not want any pilot to be in that position and want every pilot to participate in our union and have all of the benefits of membership. It has been brought to our attention that there are concerns about the status of our safety programs. There have been no changes to any safety program or your current protections as a result of the vote. Once the ALPA Central Air Safety Committee is formed, initial conversations will center on the revision of current policy documents to transition from the former Professional Standards to ALPA representation. There should be no doubt that you will continue to have representation from the same Professional Standards pilot and will have fully functioning ASAP, FOQA, and investigations programs. Please continue to use the same processes and procedures you have always used. Your MEC officers and ALPA counsel also met with JetBlue representatives in New York on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. A letter of agreement (LOA) is in the final stages of negotiation concerning a bridge agreement for a structured dispute‐resolution procedure and discipline process. Following approval, a process consistent with ALPA policy and in line with other carriers will be available for us to use to reach resolution. Until this process becomes active ALPA attorneys will serve as our grievance chairs. If you find yourself in a situation where discipline is a possibility, please contact your secretary‐treasurer for your specific base (see list below) and they will coordinate with ALPA counsel until the new process is in place. The final document will be made available to the pilot group as soon as it is approved. Remember, this is your Association! Get involved by reading your base updates and attend future meetings. Get educated on the hot topics affecting our entire industry at alpa.org. Lastly, continue to fly SOP, be professional, and be proud that we are on our way to a real CBA with real protections!
