A: So that we’re all on the same
page, Brian is asking which way
of connecting his computer to the
Internet is faster, meaning which
method downloads pages, music and
other content fastest from the Web.
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber
Line. In basic terms, this method
uses copper phone lines that run
from a phone jack to the computer to
fire up the Internet. Phone companies offer this connection.
Cable companies, Comcast in the
Purchase area, offer cable modems.
This method connects through a
cable jack in the wall just like with
cable TV.
Brian recognized a key element to
deciding which Internet connection
is fastest: Location.
Both DSL and cable modems are
fast but their speeds and your ability
to use one or the other in your home
depends on where you live.
Basically, Brian, if you live really
close to the phone company in your
area, DSL could be faster than a
cable modem in your home.
The farther you live away from
the phone company the slower the
DSL Internet connection gets.
But cable modems are more uniform in speed from home to home.
A bigger difference in cable
modem speed comes from your
neighbors. If you live beside several
homes with cable modems and those
people download music and movies
around-the-clock, 24/7, then your
Internet speed will slow down. I

Users cite convenience as the main draw of ordering dinner online

others press the start button on the microwave.
Still others turn to clicking the computer
mouse.
Like Nikki May of Paducah who during the
throes of working at home or hanging out with
friends prefers to opt for a few clicks, entering a
credit card number and having a pizza delivery
person at her door in 30 minutes.
“I order food online quite a bit,” May said.
“Ordering online is cool if you don’t feel like
going out or if the weather sucks.”
Grace Clemency of Paducah said she likes
ordering pizza to be delivered online because it’s
just easier for her.
“It’s easier than dealing with a person over
the phone or when you call a place that doesn’t
answer,” she said.
For a city like Paducah, with rural areas surrounding it, the online ordering options for local
businesses are few and far between.
National chains like Pizza Hut, Sears and Lowes
offer online ordering with delivery for locals.

But larger metropolitan areas and college
towns tend to rule the roost on options.
It was in Atlanta where May got hooked on
online ordering.
“I moved here (to Paducah) from Atlanta,
and there I could order groceries online and a
company would deliver them to straight to my
kitchen counter,” May said.
Larger cities frequently have one or more delivery services in business solely to take online
orders for restaurants, grocery stores and food
stands and then deliver them to an address for
an added fee.
May’s former home of Atlanta has Zifty.com
which bundled orders into catchy packages like
the dinner and movie option. Delivery workers
for Zifty would take orders for restaurants and
movie rental stores and delivery them together
to your door. The company also had a care package for the sick which included orders from
magazine and ice cream stands.
Not everyone is psyched about more Internet
and less personal contact in food ordering,
Clemency pointed out.
But May countered, “I don’t always buy food
to be social. If I’m making food a social event
I’m going to go out with friends and eat. ... otherwise, I’d rather work a little more while my food
comes to me.”
One gaping problem with online services
in Paducah exists, which even May can’t get
around.
“Now if only I could find a way online to take
my trash out, then I’d be set.”

Technology makes creating holiday cards a snap

Technology might have killed the art of
letter writing, but it has improved another
time-honored form of communication: holiday cards.
Thanks to digital cameras, computers and
online photo-sharing sites, it’s easier than
ever to create custom holiday cards with
your photos without the need to get out the
glue stick or leave the house.
The methods described in this column
assume that you are able to transfer photos
from your digital camera to your computer.
If you need help with that, consult your
camera’s owner’s manual. If you don’t have a
computer or digital camera, you can bring a
hard copy of a photo to stores such as Target,
Walmart, CVS and Walgreens and use a kiosk to design holiday cards.
There are dozens of online photo services
such as Snapfish.com, Shutterfly.com, Flickr.
com or KodakGallery.com that allow you to
upload a photo and use it to design a holiday
card. If you already use one of these services
to post or share your photos, your best bet
may be to use that same service so you don’t
have to create a new account or learn a new
interface.
If you haven’t declared your allegiance to
a photo-sharing service yet, here are some
tips:
■ Mac users: If you already store photos in
iPhoto, you can easily design and purchase
holiday cards right inside the iPhoto interface. Although the prices are a little more
expensive than other services, you save time
by not having to upload photos, and it’s faster
than using a Web-based photo site. To use it,
simply highlight the photo you want to use
and click on “Card.” You can then choose a
template, which is super easy because iPhoto
automatically shows you how your photo will
look in different templates.
Once you’ve added your title, greeting and
finished designing your card, you can use
your one-click Apple ID (the same one you
use to buy songs on iTunes), to purchase the
cards. All of the cards you design are saved
as “Projects” in iPhoto, so you can modify
them whenever you want and even save them
as PDFs.
Apple often runs offers of 20 percent off all
iPhoto printing services, so you may want to
keep an eye out for that.
■ Pricing and availability: If price is a
concern, shop around through the different
services to see who is offering the best deals.

Your neighbors would have to be downloading fiends for you to see a drastic
difference.
Theoretically, cable modems are considered faster because their bandwidth
limits are higher than those of DSL.

that can be downloaded from a Web site
But, people using cable modems never reach those maximum bandwidths
because all cable modem users share
the Internet connection to a degree.
Again, it just depends on whether your
neighbors are downloading content
nonstop and clogging up the line.
So, Brian, judge your location and
neighbors and make a decision. I’ve
tried calling phone and cable companies to get them to tell me the average
mb/s (megabytes per second, rate of
downloading speed for the Internet)
with mixed results. Some employees
want to help but don’t know what
they’re talking about and others refuse to say a speed on the record to a
journalist for fear of saying something
wrong.
But to a customer they act differently.
Also, keep in mind Brian that there
are a slew of other issues to consider
(installation, monthly fees, security).

This review also points out that
while cable modems are available to
some 55 million cable subscribers in
the U.S., DSL access is getting to about
50 million Americans.
Instillation problems and horror stories about complications used to plague
DSL but now prices and quality are
comparable between the two.
They are both good options. Good

Gadget survey finds many bugs can’t be repaired

NEW YORK — Gadget
makers love to sell us on all
the things their devices can
do, whether it’s letting us chat
with distant friends at any
time or watch movies on our
commute. But can anyone fix
this stuff when it breaks?
That’s a question raised by
the Pew Internet & American
Life Project, which discovered in a survey released
Sunday that 15 percent of
people who had some piece
of technology break down in
the previous year were never
able to get it repaired.
The figure was even
higher for certain products.
Almost a quarter of cell
phone users said they never
managed to get their device
fixed. And among those who
did resolve an issue, a higher
percentage either corrected
the problem themselves or
sought help from friends or
relatives rather than call
customer service.
“That 15 percent of technology users are sort of
throwing up their hands
was surprising for us,” said
John Horrigan, the author
of the study. “You’re talking
about close to one in four cell
phone users and one in five
computer users saying, ‘Hey
I can’t cope with this any longer, I’m done.”’
The survey covered com-
puters, Internet service,
music players, cell phones
and their higher-end siblings
known as “smart” phones.
And while the results are
no conclusive verdict on the
state of customer care in the
digital age, analysts say the
figures indicate the growing
complexity of technology.
Zachary McGeary, an
analyst with Jupiter Research, noted that gadgetry
now involves an “increasingly integrated ecosystem
of devices.” In other words,
it isn’t enough anymore for
cell phones and computers
to simply work on their own.
They also have to get along
with each other, and swap
video and pictures.
As providing technical
support becomes more complicated, some companies
have started tapping online
communities to offer help,
taking advantage of techsavvy customers who enjoy
trading tips online. This
method can be best for solving problems that involve
multiple devices made by
different companies, said
Lyle Fong, chief executive of
Lithium Technologies Inc.,
which sets up such customer
forums for businesses.
However, for all the talk
about online communities,
the Pew survey showed only
about 2 percent of people
solved their technology problem online.
About 38 percent of respondents called customer
service, 28 percent fixed the
problem themselves and 15
percent got help from friends
or relatives.
The rest — about 15 percent — gave up.
Horrigan said that reflected a common thread in the
survey: that most people still
don’t understand the technology they use in their daily
lives. For instance, about half
of adults who use cell phones
or the Internet usually needed someone to show them
how to use it or set it up.
Once they were up
and running, not all was
fine: Nearly 40 percent of
computer users said their
machine stopped working
properly at some point in
the past year. Almost 30
percent of cell phone users
said the same.
Horrigan argues these statistics should sway technology providers to focus harder
on making their products
more user-friendly.

Dear Annie: What do you do
when it is not your teenager’s
friend who is the bad influence
but the friend’s mother? “Betty” tells my daughter, “Chloe,”
that if she wants to go out with
someone we disapprove of to
tell us she is sleeping over at
Betty’s house and she’ll cover
for her. When we won’t buy
Chloe inappropriate clothing,
Betty encourages her to wear
her daughter’s clothes and then
change back after school so we
don’t find out.
It’s hard enough for kids to
withstand peer pressure, but
when an adult, who should
know better, acts this way, it’s
infuriating. Betty claims she is
just trying to be Chloe’s friend
but my child does not need a
middle-aged friend who ought
to stop acting like an irresponsible teenager. What can we do?
