Tips for Success When Using an Online Application Process Many companies now have applicant screening software to score your resume and decide if you fit the requirements of a job before the Human Resource Department ever sees the resume. When you use the online application process: Be aware that you may be timed when completing an application (especially when you fill out applications in kiosks at the business). Most businesses with kiosks also have an electronic application process online. If you complete the document on a personal computer, you can be prepared with an electronic master application before you log into the employers website. Make sure the master is error free. Use the copy and paste feature to save time and minimize errors. Have an electronic version of a generic cover letter that can be edited to fit several positions. You will need to use it as an introduction to your application or resume when e-mailing. Practice your typing skills. You don’t have to be very fast, but you will need to be accurate. (15-20wpm). If available, pull up the job description of the job being applied for. Print it out and highlight the skills and qualifications you have and be sure to add those to your application or resume before sending. Concentrate on key words that might be used in the auto-ranking process. Make sure these keywords are on your resume and application. If you need additional information for your resume, use occupational resources found online for ideas for key skills and abilities. (O’NET is an especially good resource http://online.onetcenter.org. Develop a list of your skills and abilities using online information. Use the list as a reference when writing resumes, preparing for job interviews, looking for a new career. There are several good resources that help you identify the skills and tasks you would perform on the www.edd/lmid/ website. Also check out the resource Work Smart (www.worksmart.ca.gov) when you visit the site. Prepare for an interview using online resources. Visit the employer’s website. Read information about the company and the job description of the job announcement carefully. Google and see what you get. Check the “going hourly rate” for this type of work. Occupational profiles available through LMID also list job descriptions, wages, job listings, licensing information, training providers, skills and tasks and anticipated job growth.
