TM DCE Manager 3.1.1 NetView for AIX Installation Instructions Document Number 7800-A2-GN12-00 April 1997 Document Purpose and Intended Audience The DCE Manager is a collection of utilities that runs as part of the NetView for the AIX network management system. The DCE Manager enables you to manage the following devices: ACCULINK 3100 Series ACCULINK 3300 Series 5100 Series Model 7610 FrameMaster, Model 9028 9160 Series Frame Relay Access Unit, Model 9621 ACCULINK Access Controller (AAC) Front Load and Full Expansion DACS LSIU These instructions describe how to install and use NetView for AIX. It assumes that you are familiar with: Features and functions of the supported devices listed above. Features and functions of NetView for AIX. Administration of IBM RS/6000 workstations, including networking administration. The documents listed at the end of this document will help you become familiar with these topics. 7800-A2-GN12-00 April 1997 1 Documentation Conventions The following conventions are used throughout this document. Typeface This typeface indicates a NetView for AIX menu selection. The arrow (→) indicates a sub-menu item, as in Administer→DCE Manager→Device Display. This typeface indicates a command that you enter via the keyboard. This typeface indicates a filename or pathname. It also indicates a field name or value in a display. Variable Information in Tables Variable information appears within angle brackets, as in <model number>. Devices Managed by the DCE Manager The DCE Manager manages the devices shown in Table 1. Figure 1 illustrates the operating environment of the DCE Manager. DCE Manager Network Environment 7800-A2-GN12-00 April 1997 3 Requirements for Running the DCE Manager Hardware Requirements The DCE Manager runs on AIX workstations with the following requirements: 64 MB of RAM minimum 196 MB of swap space 100 MB of free hard disk space NOTE: For standalone systems, where Oracle is to be installed on the same workstation, an additional 300 MB of disk space is required. Software Requirements The DCE Manager requires the following software: AIX, Release 4.1.4 or higher. NetView Release 4. Oracle RDBMS Server, Release 7.2.2.3 or higher (with SQLnet 2.1 or higher). Tooltalk, which is a standard part of CDE toolset on AIX 4.1.4. Oracle Operating Environment Oracle can be running on the same system as the DCE Manager or on a remote system provided that Oracle is accessible from the system on which the DCE Manager is running. See Oracle Preparation on page 6 for a description of what you need to do prior to installation of the DCE Manager. Network and NetView Requirements Devices must be connected to the management system running NetView for AIX via a TCP/IP network. There is no limitation on the physical medium that connects the devices and the management system provided that the TCP/IP software package supports it. See Configuring Devices in Chapter 6 and Appendix A, SNMP Management Connectivity Examples, in the DCE Manager for HP OpenView User’s Guide for information on network connection. Refer to the individual device manuals. 4 April 1997 7800-A2-GN12-00 Device Requirements You are responsible for ensuring that the devices are properly configured and connected to the management system running NetView for AIX. Refer to the individual device manuals listed in Product-Related Documents at the end of this document. See Appendix A, SNMP Management Connectivity Examples, in the DCE Manager for HP OpenView User’s Guide for examples of managementspecific device configuration. Contents of the Package The product package contains these components: DCE Manager for NetView for AIX Release 3.1.1 on CD-ROM. DCE Manager for HP OpenView User’s Guide. Software license agreement. The software license is an important document that contains the product serial number needed for the operation of the DCE Manager. This serial number is requested also when you place a call for support. Please retain this license for future reference. DCE Manager Release Notes, in /usr/OV/ReleaseNotes/attGEM/attGEMr1.rn — DCE Manager Release Notes may be included with the CD-ROM installation of DCE /AIX4/ReleaseNotes or DCE Manager Release Notes may be installed at any time after DCE /AIX4/ReleaseNotes is installed. — If DCE Manager Release Notes is to be installed, it must be done after the installation of DCE Manager 3.1.1. If you would like to browse the MIBs using the NetView for AIX, use the NetView for AIX menu selection Options→Load/Unload MIBs: SNMP to first load the MIBs (listed in Table 2) and then use Misc→SNMP MIB Browser to browse the MIBs. Oracle Preparation Request that your Oracle administrator set up a login on the Oracle database using the name of the system on which you intend to install the DCE Manager. Obtain from your Oracle administrator the information requested in the prompt table of Step 5 in the following procedure. 6 April 1997 7800-A2-GN12-00 Installation Procedure To install the DCE Manager, follow the steps below. (Refer to your NetView for AIX documentation for detailed descriptions of NetView for AIX commands.) " Procedure 1. Ensure that the system on which you are installing the DCE Manager meets the requirements described in Requirements for Running the DCE Manager on page 4. Also, ensure that you have configured Oracle as described in Oracle Preparation. 2. Log in as root on the system on which you want to install the DCE Manager. 3. Type: PATH=/usr/bin:$PATH:/opt/OV/bin export PATH 4. Mount the CD-ROM drive using the example that pertains to your workstation. For AIX systems, type: mkdir /tmp/cdrom /etc/mount -r -v cdrfs /dev/cd0 /tmp/cdrom 5. To install on AIX systems, type: cd /tmp/cdrom/DCE/AIX4 ./DCEinstall Answer the prompts presented to you during installation: Prompt Description Do you want to remove the existing product DCE Manager? (y/n): If DCE Manager already exists, the first two prompts will be displayed. Do you want to delete DCE Database? (y/n): If you answer ‘n’, installation is automatically stopped. Do you want to install DCE version 3.1.1? (y/n): If you are permanently removing DCE Manager or installing a different version of DCE Manager, answer ‘y’. If you want to reuse existing database, answer ‘n’. Answer ‘y’ if you want to install DCE Manager. Answer ‘n’ if you want to abort the installation process. Do you want to create DCE database now? (y/n): Answer ‘y’ if this is the first time you are installing the DCE Manager. If you have a pre-existing version of the DCE Manager, you may want to answer ‘n’ to keep the database, which contains device configuration information, to avoid a delay in reconstructing the database of a large network. In general, you should answer ‘y’ to create a new database. 7800-A2-GN12-00 April 1997 7 Prompt Description Oracle bin path (default=/home/oracle/bin or previously configured path) File path to Oracle bin directory. TWO-TASK (default=gem1 or previously configured variable) Environmental variable related to a client/server operation. TNS_ADMIN (default=/home/oracle/network/admin or previously configured variable) Environmental variable that identifies the Oracle network administration directory. 6. Check the smit.log files for error descriptions if any error messages were displayed during the installation process. 7. Type: cd / 8. To unmount the CD-ROM, type: /etc/umount /tmp/cdrom 9. Exit from root. 10. Reboot your machine. The DCE Manager is integrated into NetView for AIX, so that when you run NetView for AIX, the DCE Manager functions are available. DCE Manager Processes To ensure the proper operation of the DCE Manager, check that the processes listed below are running by typing in a shell window /usr/OV/bin/ovstatus. object manager name: attGEMlistener state: RUNNING PID: 1425 last message: Initialization complete. exit status: – object manager name: attGEMgtp state: RUNNING PID: 1432 last message: Initialization complete. exit status: – object manager name: attGEMparser state: RUNNING PID: 1433 last message: Initialization complete. – exit status: 8 April 1997 7800-A2-GN12-00 Determining Your Version of NetView for AIX To determine the version of NetView for AIX, type the following in a shell window: /usr/bin/lslpp -cgh nv6000.base.obj The output on AIX systems will resemble this display: usr/lib/objrepos:nv6000.base.obj:4.1.1.0::COMMIT:COMPLETE :10/31/96:09;36;12 The third colon-separated field (in this case 4.1.1.0) indicates the version of NetView for AIX. Removing the DCE Manager To remove the DCE Manager, follow these steps: " Procedure 1. Read the release notes: /usr/OV/ReleaseNotes/attGEM/attGEMr1.rn. 2. Log in as root on the system on which you want to remove the DCE Manager. 3. Type in a shell window: PATH = $PATH:/usr/OV/bin:/etc:/usr/etc export PATH 4. Stop NetView for AIX processes if they are running. Type: ovstop 5. Type: attGEMremove If you have a pre-existing version of the DCE Manager database, you are asked if you want to remove the DCE Manager database. You may want to keep the database, which contains device configuration information, to avoid a delay in reconstructing the database of a large network. In general, you should remove the existing database. 6. Restart the NetView for AIX processes, if you stopped them in Step 4.
