Requirements for Running the DCE Manager
Hardware Requirements
The DCE Manager runs on AIX workstations with the following requirements:
64 MB of RAM minimum
196 MB of swap space
100 MB of free hard disk space
NOTE:
For standalone systems, where Oracle is to be installed on the same
workstation, an additional 300 MB of disk space is required.
Software Requirements
The DCE Manager requires the following software:
AIX, Release 4.1.4 or higher.
NetView Release 4.
Oracle RDBMS Server, Release 7.2.2.3 or higher (with SQLnet 2.1 or
higher).
Tooltalk, which is a standard part of CDE toolset on AIX 4.1.4.
Oracle Operating Environment
Oracle can be running on the same system as the DCE Manager or on a remote
system provided that Oracle is accessible from the system on which the DCE
Manager is running.
See Oracle Preparation on page 6 for a description of what you need to do prior
to installation of the DCE Manager.
Network and NetView Requirements
Devices must be connected to the management system running NetView for AIX
via a TCP/IP network. There is no limitation on the physical medium that
connects the devices and the management system provided that the TCP/IP
software package supports it. See Configuring Devices in Chapter 6 and
Appendix A, SNMP Management Connectivity Examples, in the DCE Manager
for HP OpenView User’s Guide for information on network connection. Refer to
the individual device manuals.

Device Requirements
You are responsible for ensuring that the devices are properly configured and
connected to the management system running NetView for AIX. Refer to the
individual device manuals listed in Product-Related Documents at the end of this
document. See Appendix A, SNMP Management Connectivity Examples, in the
DCE Manager for HP OpenView User’s Guide for examples of managementspecific device configuration.
Contents of the Package
The product package contains these components:
DCE Manager for NetView for AIX Release 3.1.1 on CD-ROM.
DCE Manager for HP OpenView User’s Guide.
Software license agreement. The software license is an important document
that contains the product serial number needed for the operation of the DCE
Manager. This serial number is requested also when you place a call for
support. Please retain this license for future reference.
DCE Manager Release Notes, in /usr/OV/ReleaseNotes/attGEM/attGEMr1.rn
— DCE Manager Release Notes may be included with the CD-ROM
installation of DCE /AIX4/ReleaseNotes or DCE Manager Release Notes
may be installed at any time after DCE /AIX4/ReleaseNotes is installed.
— If DCE Manager Release Notes is to be installed, it must be done after
the installation of DCE Manager 3.1.1.
Management Information Base Files (MIBs)
The DCE Manager uses internal copies of the MIBs listed below for device
management.
7800-A2-GN12-00
MIB II (RFC 1213)
MIB-II Generic Interface Extensions (RFC 1229)
RS-232-Like MIB (RFC 1659)

The installation process copies browsable versions of these MIBs to your hard
disk. If you would like to browse the MIBs using the NetView for AIX, use the
NetView for AIX menu selection Options→Load/Unload MIBs: SNMP to first load
the MIBs (listed in Table 2) and then use Misc→SNMP MIB Browser to browse
the MIBs.

Installing the DCE Manager
To install the product from the distribution media to your management system’s
hard disk, follow the procedures described in the sections below.
Oracle Preparation
Request that your Oracle administrator set up a login on the Oracle database
using the name of the system on which you intend to install the DCE Manager.
Obtain from your Oracle administrator the information requested in the prompt
table of Step 5 in the following procedure.

Installation Procedure
To install the DCE Manager, follow the steps below. (Refer to your NetView for
AIX documentation for detailed descriptions of NetView for AIX commands.)
" Procedure
1. Ensure that the system on which you are installing the DCE Manager meets
the requirements described in Requirements for Running the DCE Manager
on page 4. Also, ensure that you have configured Oracle as described in
Oracle Preparation.
2. Log in as root on the system on which you want to install the DCE Manager.
3. Type:
PATH=/usr/bin:$PATH:/opt/OV/bin
export PATH
4. Mount the CD-ROM drive using the example that pertains to your
workstation.
For AIX systems, type:
mkdir /tmp/cdrom
/etc/mount -r -v cdrfs /dev/cd0 /tmp/cdrom
5. To install on AIX systems, type:
cd /tmp/cdrom/DCE/AIX4
./DCEinstall
Answer the prompts presented to you during installation:
Prompt
Description
Do you want to remove the existing
product DCE Manager? (y/n):
If DCE Manager already exists, the first
two prompts will be displayed.
Do you want to delete DCE Database?
(y/n):
If you answer ‘n’, installation is
automatically stopped.
Do you want to install DCE version 3.1.1?
(y/n):
If you are permanently removing DCE
Manager or installing a different
version of DCE Manager, answer ‘y’. If
you want to reuse existing database,
answer ‘n’.
Answer ‘y’ if you want to install DCE
Manager. Answer ‘n’ if you want to
abort the installation process.
Do you want to create DCE database
now? (y/n):
Answer ‘y’ if this is the first time you
are installing the DCE Manager.
If you have a pre-existing version of
the DCE Manager, you may want to
answer ‘n’ to keep the database, which
contains device configuration
information, to avoid a delay in
reconstructing the database of a large
network. In general, you should
answer ‘y’ to create a new database.

Prompt
Description
Oracle bin path (default=/home/oracle/bin
or previously configured path)
File path to Oracle bin directory.
Oracle home path (default=/home/oracle or File path to Oracle home directory.
previously configured path)
ORACLE_SID (default=gem1 or previously Environmental variable that identifies
configured variable)
the source identifier of Oracle
database.
TWO-TASK (default=gem1 or previously
configured variable)
Environmental variable related to a
client/server operation.
TNS_ADMIN
(default=/home/oracle/network/admin or
previously configured variable)
Environmental variable that identifies
the Oracle network administration
directory.
6. Check the smit.log files for error descriptions if any error messages were
displayed during the installation process.
7. Type: cd /
8. To unmount the CD-ROM, type:
/etc/umount /tmp/cdrom
9. Exit from root.
10. Reboot your machine.
The DCE Manager is integrated into NetView for AIX, so that when you run
NetView for AIX, the DCE Manager functions are available.
DCE Manager Processes
To ensure the proper operation of the DCE Manager, check that the processes
listed below are running by typing in a shell window /usr/OV/bin/ovstatus.

Determining Your Version of NetView for AIX
To determine the version of NetView for AIX, type the following in a shell window:
/usr/bin/lslpp -cgh nv6000.base.obj
The output on AIX systems will resemble this display:
usr/lib/objrepos:nv6000.base.obj:4.1.1.0::COMMIT:COMPLETE
:10/31/96:09;36;12
The third colon-separated field (in this case 4.1.1.0) indicates the version of
NetView for AIX.
Removing the DCE Manager
To remove the DCE Manager, follow these steps:
" Procedure
1. Read the release notes: /usr/OV/ReleaseNotes/attGEM/attGEMr1.rn.
2. Log in as root on the system on which you want to remove the DCE
Manager.
3. Type in a shell window:
PATH = $PATH:/usr/OV/bin:/etc:/usr/etc
export PATH
4. Stop NetView for AIX processes if they are running. Type:
ovstop
5. Type:
attGEMremove
If you have a pre-existing version of the DCE Manager database, you are
asked if you want to remove the DCE Manager database. You may want to
keep the database, which contains device configuration information, to avoid
a delay in reconstructing the database of a large network. In general, you
should remove the existing database.
6. Restart the NetView for AIX processes, if you stopped them in Step 4. Type:
ovstart
