Includes supervision of support personnel, interprofessional evaluation and treatment, and administrative tasks. Six week full-time experience under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES: In addition to the final evaluation based on the 24 criterion on the APTA Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI) the students at the completion of the course the will be able to: 1. Conduct safe and comprehensive patient management in diverse cases, under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. 2. Communicate effectively with patients/clients, family members, caregivers, other health professionals, and payers. 3. Collaborate effectively with other health professionals to evaluate/treat clients and accomplish discharge plans. 4. 5. 6. 7. Utilize effective time management to accomplish clinical tasks. Create wellness/prevention plans which exhibit cultural competence. Delegate tasks and supervise support personnel. Present a professional in-service to the clinical facility staff. COURSE METHODS: Discussion Problem Solving Inservice and Journal Club assignments Weekly Planning Forms Final evaluation by CI and self ASSIGNMENTS: Students will need to present to the facility staff an in-service, which will elaborate on a given pathology, treatment or other PT related topic. Students should research the topic, outlining its course and clinical manifestation as well as impact on the delivery of physical therapy services. Next, students should plan a realistic treatment program taking into account the above information as well as any current recommendations based on a literature review. Hand into DCE the outline or handouts, a sign in sheet, and evaluation from participants. Students are also required to hold one journal club meeting. The student is to ask the staff for a topic. Search for articles, critique each article, and make articles available to staff prior to the meeting. Then lead a discussion around the articles (no more than 5 articles, but at least 2). Hand into DCE a sign in sheet, articles and evaluation from participants. These assignments will need to be received by the DCE no later than the Monday after the completion of the clinical. Other projects assigned by either DCE or CI are due by the Monday following the affiliation unless otherwise instructed. GRADING POLICY: The grade for the course will be given by the DCE. The grade will be derived from the APTA CPI that is done by the Clinical Instructor, midterm site visit/phone conference by the DCE/Faculty and the assignments (in-service and journal club). A satisfactory level must be obtained on the CPI and assignments to get a Satisfactory in the course. GRADING SCALE: This course is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory **If a student receives an Unsatisfactory on any clinical affiliation they are required to repeat the experience (class) at a different clinical facility but of the same type (i.e. Acute, Outpatient Orthopedics, etc.) An unsatisfactory grade is equivalent to an “F”, and will be dealt with in accordance with the discipline policy. ANTICIPATED CLINICAL AFFILIATION SCHEDULE: I. Orientation to facility, staff and supportive personnel. II. Review student data form with CI to determine individual goals and objectives. III. Established based on individual learning style, area of strengths and weakness a plan to accomplish the above behavioral objectives. IV. Participate in direct patient care under a licensed physical therapist 40 hours/week for 6 weeks, with site visit/phone visit at midterm by the ACCE or a faculty member. V. Complete weekly planning forms with CI VI. Complete required final evaluation materials, including inservice and journal club meeting paperwork and CI/facility evaluation. VII. Review evaluation with CI during final week of clinical experience. CLASS ATTENDANCE, PARTICIPATION AND MAKE UP POLICY: Students are expected to attend 240 hours of clinical education experience. Students are required to contact the clinical coordinator/instructor prior to any absence. Students are permitted one excused absence; any absence greater than one day must be made up by the student at a time agreeable with the clinical site. It is the responsibility of the student for knowing and meeting all requirements including evaluations, assignments and clinical participation. ACCOMODATION: Any student with a disability must provide the ACCE with written proof of the disability no later than the first week of the clinical affiliation. The information given to the ACCE will be kept confidential. If the student wishes for the clinical instructor(s) and CCCE to be aware of the disability, the student must inform the site within the first week. The student should then ask for the accommodations necessary. It is then the decision of the clinic whether they can or cannot grant the reasonable accommodation request. If the clinic is unable to grant the request the ACCE should be notified and a decision will be made regarding a change in clinical site.
