1.0 Third CSOHNS UME retreat (Toronto)
The CSOHNS undergraduate medical education group held our 3rd bi-annual retreat in Toronto on
October 19, 2013. Previous retreats were held in 2009 (London) and 2011 (Ottawa). I would like to
formally thank Dr. Al Chiodo (U of Toronto), who did a wonderful job organizing the day, as well as
Dr. Ian Witterick who hosted the event and Dr. Patrick Gullane who supported the event as CSOHNS
president. A summary of the retreat is appended to this report.
Due to the success of these events, our group decided unanimously to hold retreats annually instead
of bi-annually. The next retreat will be hosted by Dr. Lily HP Nguyen and Dr. Marc Tewfik at McGill
University on Saturday November 8, 2014.

6.0 Congratulations to Dr. Lily HP Nguyen
Dr. Nguyen was recently awarded the Canadian Association of Medical Education Certificate of
Merit Award- this is a national award given in recognition of outstanding contributions to medical
education. To my knowledge, Dr. Nguyen is the second Otolaryngologist ever to have received this
prestigious honor (Dr. Dorion received it in 2003).
7.0 The state of UME in our Society
There is continuing and growing interest in medical education amongst our Society members. This
has resulted in an elevated profile of our specialty in medical schools across Canada. My vision for
the group is continued collaborative projects that enhance medical student education with respect
to curriculum design, assessment, eLearning, innovation, and educational scholarship.
Respectfully submitted.
Kevin Fung, MD, FRCS(C), FACS
Associate Professor – Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, Western University
