教 育 部 奬 助 國 立 清 華 大 學 選 送 學 生 赴 國 外 頂 尖 大 學 (機 構 )研 修 學 生 成果報告書 My Splendid life in University Of Toronto 獲獎生姓名:陸韻婷 出國地點:加拿大 研 修 大 學 (機 構 ) : 多 倫 多 大 學 University of Toronto 研修系所(單位) : Faculty of arts & science 出 國 期 間 : 2007 年 9 月 至 2008 年 5 月 報 告 日 期 : 2008 年 8 月 6 日 My Splendid life in University of Toronto 942645 Tanya Lu Studying in Canada has always been my dream, yet it is definitely not an easy one. Since University of Toronto has no agreement with NTHU, and their reluctance to accept student from non-sister universities, it had been really hard for me to apply at the first place. Luckily, as a member of APEX Honor Society, I was finally able to register as a visiting student with their assistance. However, you’d be totally wrong if you think the fairy tale goes on happily every after! Everything from house-hunting to prerequisites-matching all turned out to be very troublesome and difficult. And they indeed bothered me a lot along my second year university life. Nevertheless, after my one year stay in Toronto, I’m happy to say it’s all worth it! On the very first day I arrived at U of T, I was amazed by the colorful blossoms and greenness within the huge campus. Its combination of historical and new buildings shows how long this university had stood, serving knowledge-hunger people and it’s willingness to adapt to new trend. This spirit is totally coherent with the true Canadian culture – to embrace all different culture while treasuring its own. It is because of this common spirit that makes Canada one of the most diverse culture countries and therefore my dream place to study. During my knowledge pursuing days, I’ve lunched with scholars from Poland and Spain, studied with friends from India, partied with girls from Korea and explored the city accompanied by friends from Chile and Mexico. The city of Toronto is even more beautiful for being a condensed global village. University of Toronto, being the best university in Canada and top ranks world wide, is very well equipped with all kinds of facilities, ranging from lab and classrooms to gyms and dance studios. However, it’s their Career Center that impressed me the most. The main purpose of a Career Center is to provide students every means to get well prepared for future careers. You can learn everything from job search to interview technique, and even table manner there! Information sessions like networking tips and work place etiquette are held on monthly basis. If you like, sigh up for the daily resume clinic and have the professionals read your resume before it is actually handed in. What’s more, search the career library and have an in depth understanding for your dream work. After making use of the fascinating service, I sincerely felt the gap between work and student life has been eliminated. And I’m confident to say that I’m more prepared for it now! Learning at University of Toronto is another big surprise! As one of my professors stated,” University is a place for students to self-study, given the proper guide”. Back in Taiwan, taking a course is just learning the textbook, which is already summarized by the professor, in class. All I have to do is to memorize it. It was after my first shocking class that I realized professors here only spend a small portion of time in class to illustrate the main concepts. It is my responsibility to read the text, organize it and understand it. Even if it means digging your head in piles of reference books for the whole weekend! Then what do professors do for the rest of the class? They would guide us to link what we’re learning to the realistic world. They would talk about how the theories are actually applied, or how there’s still disagreement between groups of scholars in today’s society. Learning, therefore, becomes a mean to understand the world. With their guide, I’m now always reading the latest news and trying to explain it with what I learned in class passionately. They had brought out my enthusiasm for my study and for the world. Aside from the highly praised academics and gorgeous campus, University of Toronto has a lot more to offer. Throughout my stay there, I have not only broadened my perspectives but also learned the art of making friends with people from different cultures. This wonderful year had impacted me more than I’ve ever imagined, and I’m just so grateful for all the assistance I’ve got to get me there. Thanks to NTHU and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company for the great opportunity and the scholarship. Thanks to Vicki, who helped me with the paper works. And last but not least, special thanks to professor 張焯然 and professor 黃裕烈. I could never have gotten the scholarship or the opportunity to study at U of T if it weren’t for your kindly assistance and information.
