SPANISH 1 (512) SYLLABUS ¡BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL! 2011-2012 Señora Arguelles COURSE DESCRIPTION: This beginning Spanish course centers on the progressive and integrated learning of language, culture, and communication. Class activities are grouped around these three areas and are enhanced by authentic documents, videotapes, CD’s, DVD’s, computer software, and a variety of enrichment activities. EXPECTATIONS FROM STUDENTS: After successfully completing this course, the student is expected to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of minimal functional Spanish. 2. Communicate basic needs in the target language. 3. Demonstrate reading comprehension and written phrases within the scope of Spanish studied. 4. Begin to demonstrate cultural empathy. CREDITS: One credit LEVEL: 9, 10, 11, 12 PREREQUISITES: None AREAS OF STUDY: Oral-aural skill development, grammatical structures, cultural studies, reading comprehension, and writing development of the Spanish language are the areas of concentration for Level 1. CLASS REQUIREMENTS: 1. Prerequisite: None 2. Classroom Supplies: Pencil, textbook, workbook, paper, folder and spiral. COURSE WORK: 1. Oral participation 2. Homework Assignments: It is the student’s responsibility to complete homework 1 3. 4. 5. assignments given by the teacher. Failure to do so will result in a lowering of the grade. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given on a regular basis to check knowledge of specific material. Unit Tests: These standardized tests, which accompany the textbook, will be administered upon the completion of each unit. Examination and Special Projects: There will be a final exam given at the end of each semester. Projects, as required by the teacher, may be incorporated throughout the year. ATTENDANCE: Due to the nature of foreign language learning, daily attendance is essential for success. Excused absences: As per student handbook. In-class points may be forfeited if absent from class. It is the student’s responsibility to see the teacher about make-up work on the day he/she returns to class. The guidance department should be contacted for extended absences. If the student knows in advance of an absence from class because of a field trip, athletic event, etc., the student is expected to make arrangements with the teacher before the day of the absence. If a test is scheduled for the day of the absence, the test is to be taken prior to the absence unless otherwise arranged with the teacher. The student is responsible for make-up work as per teacher instruction. Unexcused absences: No credit will be given for the work missed. ***In my classroom directly to the right when you walk in, the grades are posted weekly, daily homework is written on a calendar, and there are files for extra worksheets. Please use these resources first when you are absent. TARDIES: The student is expected to be in his/her seat when the bell rings. Failure to do so will result in a tardy. Tardiness will be penalized as per student handbook stated procedures. The total points will determine grades for each nine weeks. The following will be the overall grading distribution: A = 90% - 100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% E = 0% - 59% 2
