THE DITTY BAG Lake Canyon Yacht Club Canyon Lake, Texas Copyright 2007-2008 Lake Canyon Yacht Club P. O. Box 18554, San Antonio, TX 78218-0554 Volume 40 Number 12 Commodore's Report By Wayne Peacock Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and happy holiday wishes to you all. In spite of the turmoil roiling through the economy and the stock market, we have a lot to be thankful about. The wind continues to blow and there is water, albeit not enough, in the lake. As I walked around the club the first weekend of Wurstfest, watching the many dinghy sailors prepare for competition, the many volunteers preparing food, supporting registration, and launching a hundred boats in short order, I was once again filled with pride about the amazing community we have at LCYC. Where else can you find a sailing venue as special as LCYC, or a better group of sailors committed to serving their club? We really do have a lot to be thankful for. Thanks to the leadership of Phil May and our many volunteers, LCYC hosted another outstanding Wurstfest regatta. Over 150 boats competed during the two weekends. By all accounts, the sailors who traveled to our regatta had a great time both on and off the water. They too recognize LCYC as a special place. As the year comes to a close, the Board of Governors has been completing year-end duties in preparation for the annual LCYC members meeting. Pursuant to our bylaws, a slate of five governors who will serve during 2009-2010 has been nominated and will stand for election at the annual meeting. Likewise, the 2009 Vice Commodore has been nominated. The proposed governors are: Barry Parkoff, Kelly Terrell, Carl Hawkins, Bob Weiss, and Fred Day. David Bray is the nominee for Vice Commodore. The governors are also proposing changes to the bylaws that will be presented to the membership for approval at the annual meeting. These changes include a provision to exempt Charter Members from paying Special Assessments, a provision to enable the Board of Governors to hold telephonic and electronic meetings, and a modification to the provision that governs audits. More information about these changes is available in the notice of annual meeting that was mailed to each th member on November 24 . The 2009 budget was approved at the November Board of Governors meeting. A summary of the 2009 budget from our Budget Chair Henry McGill is included in the annual meeting notice. I recognition of current economic Volume 40 Number 12 December 2008 December 2008 conditions, he budget reflects no membership growth and a prudent approach to expense management. As a result, member dues and maintenance fees will remain unchanged in 2009. However, in order to keep pace with the current and future cost of repair and maintenance of the marina facilities, slip fees and dry storage fees will be increased 12% from the 2008 amount, beginning with the January billing cycle. Members who are subject to these charges will see the increase listed in the th statement that is sent on December 25 . The increase to slip and storage fees is necessary to keep up with current and future marina expenses. In spite of these increases, the slip rates remain a relative bargain compared to other marinas, and historically, the increase in rates is still way below the rate of inflation over the last 25 years. The board of governors will hold their last meeting of the th year at 8:00am on December 13 . As always, these meetings are open to all club members. With water levels remaining at historically low levels, the slip relocation committee continues to evaluate options to relocate portions of the marina and to replace aging sections of “B” dock. More information about these efforts will be presented early in 2009. While the water is low, Docks and Grounds will extend the launch ramp deeper into the lake. We expect to close the ramp during the first 7-10 days of December to accomplish this work. Again, Merry Christmas and happy holiday wishes to you all. Wayne = 2008 WURSTFEST REGATTA By Phil May As in so many years past, this year’s 2008 Wurstfest Regatta was an overwhelming success. The racers endured light air on both Saturdays, but enjoyed fair winds on both Sundays. Attendance was excellent from racers and volunteers alike, and all were in good spirits. Over 125 outstanding volunteers cheerfully attended to the needs of over 150 racers. We received numerous compliments about our club and the members. The grounds looked beautiful thanks to our Docks and Grounds team Josef, Brian and Donny. Carolyn Cole’s superb coordination of all the logistics from A to Z cannot be understated. Thank you Carolyn and to all of our wonderful volunteers, who made this very impressive regatta such a point of pride for our club. Hundreds of hours go into the planning and execution of our Wurstfest Regatta, most of which comes from the Wurstfest chairpersons. These are the people responsible for everything from the on the water race operations to all of the food preparations and meal service. They also oversee the registration, and the safe launching and retrieval of boats. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Henry McGill, Mary Lindsey, Dave Lilley and Luzia and Wayne Weston for their tireless efforts over the past several months ensuring the success of the event. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Rick Reyes, Bob Wickman, Ray Leubner, and David Bray for their sharp eyes on safety at the ramps. David did double duty as Docks and Grounds Chair and assisting me where needed, and he was needed all over. All of the Board Volume 40 Number 12 December 2008 Members were there pitching in, as well as many of the Board nominees for 2009. We appreciate the generous donations from our sponsors Coral Reef Sportswear, Adelante Tortillas, Maricopa River Resort, The Cover Girl, Elite Skin Care, The Westin at La Contara, Kiolbasa Sausage, Tri County Distributing, as well as several club members who donated anonymously. Ken Taylor with Regatta Networks made the scoring possible, with Ron Wilson at the keyboard. To the over 100 volunteers I haven’t mention, thank you so much. You all made this great event a smashing success. = WURSTFEST GALLEY REPORT By Sandra Lindsey Klopft Schlag Wer es Gibt? Wurstfest Wurstfest wer? Wurstfest Regatta ist unser Name und Speise ist unser Spiel. Only in Texas would you have 98 lbs of chili, cornbread, 1200+ breakfast tacos, 16 lbs of breakfast sausage, 95 dozen eggs, 960 links of Kiolbasa sausage, tamales, 11 gallons of sauerkraut, 150 lbs of potatoes, 21 gallons of green beans, 4 German chocolate cakes, 180 apple turnovers, 14 apple strudels, 10 gallons of tropical fruit, and a boat load of banana in two 48 hour periods. Wurstfest sailors really know how to eat. No matter how what the outcome of their race, all racers had a great time eating. Mary Lindsey knows how to run a kitchen that would make the White House chiefs envious. Everything looks so easy do to her planning and excellent help. It should be no surprise that many people come back year after year to help. The following people should be thanked for helping the two weekends of Wurstfest Regatta. Linda Arnold, Marvin Arnold, Wade Arledge, Rose Balent Clarence Barter, Lola Barter, Judi Berridge, Mary Bourgeois, David Bray, Maggie Bray, Chris Christian, VanEtte Christian, Rick Cioppa, Anu Day, Meera Day, Fred Day, Carl Hawkins, Patsy Henderickson, Rowland Hill, Mary Holmes, Kenneth Kardys, Pat Ketchum, David Kirk, Haney Kirk, Hans Kohler, David Lilley, Chris Lilley, Michelle Lilley, Lloyd Lindsey, Mary Lindsey, Michael Lindsey, Sandra Lindsey, Sarah Lindsey, Nancy May, Phil May, Clo McGill, Margaret McGill, Millie McVey, Hanz Micklitz, Marila Middleton, Ginny Peacock, Sue Radley, Jim Ritchie, Les Robertson, Janet Robertson, Barbara Rudduck, Maureen Simmons, Rick Sorkness, Aaron Stuckey, Evelyn Stuckey, Vic Stuckey, Terry Tomko, Joan Webb, Christian Weston, Luzia Weston, Wayne Weston, and Joan Wilson. The sausage is sold at major grocery stores in the San Antonio, New Braunfels area. Adelita Tamale and Tortilla Factory is located at 1130 Fresno St. in San Antonio. Be sure to let these great sponsors know how much you enjoyed having their products at our Wurstfest Regatta. So yes, Wurstfest Regatta is our name and food is our game. = Activities Chairman Report As some of you may already know, the duties of Activities Chairman have been divided into two jobs. Pat Ketchum will be responsible for the social events while Luzia Weston will be taking care of the racers. I hope that this will work out to benefit everyone, and I believe that they are both well suited for their positions. As much as I will miss grocery shopping, food planning, and cooking for all of you, I think I will just have to use all that extra time perfecting my sailing skills. So if anyone has any questions, you can find me on the water. = The Cruising Crowd By Wayne & Luzia Weston By Michelle Lilley I can’t believe another year has past. It seems to have gone by so quickly. I guess we were just having too much fun. I have enjoyed these past two years as Activities Chairman. I have learned so much about this club, and I have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people. I have to say that the greatest perk in this job is all of the great friends I have made. I know for a fact that I would not have had the opportunity to get to know so many of our club members and their families if it had not been for volunteering for this position. I hope I can be an example to others who may be thinking about volunteering but are a little afraid or intimidated. In return for giving a little of your time, you can gain some friendships that could last a lifetime, not to mention a sense of pride in the club. It is well known that the list of volunteers is endless, and it would be impossible to name them all. They are the ones that work behind the scenes, and not just in the kitchen. They are the ones peeling potatoes and cooking sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs; and lets not forget frying fish and hushpuppies. We should also recognize those out on the water in committee boats and chase boats, those that raise the race flags, blow the horns, and set the marks. The list can go on and on. I would have never realized the time and energy it takes to make LCYC possible. We appreciate all of you who have given of yourselves to make this club the fun family friendly place that it is. I thank you all for your words of encouragement and appreciation you have shown me throughout these last two years. I am especially grateful to my husband who was a tremendous help in meal planning, food prep, clean up and emotional support. And last but certainly never least, I want Mary Lindsey to know how truly grateful I am for the time she spent these last two years helping me and David. Not only did she help with the food prep and clean up, etc., but she was so patient with me from the beginning. She really broke me in and showed be the ropes. I just want everyone to know and appreciate what a tremendous asset she is to this club. I sure appreciate her energy and ambition. Wurstfest is over, and we all had a great time. We hope that everyone enjoyed themselves and had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Luzia and I will be hosting the th Cruising Crowd Christmas Party on December 20 at 6:00pm in the clubhouse. We will be preparing AppleBeef-Roast and Paprika Chicken along with homemade Mulled Wine. We would appreciate if you bring appetizers, veggies, salads, rolls, mashed potatoes and deserts. Please call Luzia at 210-316-7918, RSVP, and let her know what you will bring. Also, don’t forget to bring your white elephant gifts for the exchange (max $10.00). Be ready for a lot of fun, good food, and fellowship with fellow sailors. Mark your calendars and plan to attend upcoming Cruising Crowd events: December 20, Cruising Crowd Christmas Party January, Bunco We are still looking for hosts for some of our upcoming events. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to host an event. Luzia and I have really enjoyed coordinating the Cruising Crowd events the last two years and look forward to more wonderful events in the upcoming years. We have been asked to work in another capacity in the club, and someone else will be taking over the Cruising Crowd in January. I hope that you volunteer to host events and participate in as many as possible. Thank you once again for attending and volunteering the last two years. Let’s make 2009 the best year yet. If you have questions about upcoming events, would like to volunteer to host an event, or have suggestions for future Cruising Crowd events, call or e-mail Wayne or Luzia Weston (210-325-6598 or 210-316-7918) wtweston@satx.rr.com. We’ll see you cruising around the lake. Wayne & Luzia Weston = Volume 40 Number 12 December 2008 The Ditty Bag - Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas Copyright 2007-2008 Lake Canyon Yacht Club - P. O. Box 18554, San Antonio, TX 78218-0554 Page 3 of 7 Race Chairman Chairman Report By Bubba Horner In the November Ditty Bag, I stated that for the upcoming Winter Series and throughout 2009, we will have keelboat races on the second Saturday after the board meeting, and the boardboat races will be sailed on the third Sunday of each month. After more consultations with participants and volunteers who run the races, I have decided to rescind that decision and stay with the original schedule. Therefore, both the Keelboat and Boardboat series will be race as currently scheduled, on the second weekend of the month. I want to encourage our women to participate in Sunfish racing. We will score them separate from the men's races. All we need is 3 gals. I can think of that least 4 that has told me they would sail in a women's series; Kellie Terrell, Catherine Parten, Dee Minerva, and Michelle Lilley. Also again this year, we will have a Winter Series for the boardboats. Last year was first time, and it was a huge success. We had ideal winds and very mild weather, as far as temperature was concerned. I always thought the Spring Series was the toughest. The winds are strong and the water is cold until mid-May. Finally, we will welcome any Portsmouth boat to race. If can get 3 or more, we will score you separately as your own fleet. Let us get out on the water and learn how to really handle and take control of your boat. = Note: The Canyon Lake’s level is down to 898.65 feet and still dropping. Daily and yearly graphs of the lake’s level are available on www.LCYC.net Docks and Grounds By David Bray November is just about over. It is the busiest month of the year for the club. Wurstfest was great, with only slightly fewer boats than last year. The lake level has fallen to the point of us being able to do some ramp work. We are planning on replacing the first steel ramp on each side with concrete and put the plates further out. This will take the hump out of the left side of the ramp. st Work will begin on December 1 , and it should take about a week. The ramp will be closed for this time period, but back in operation for the Winter Series. Since this is the last article of the year, I want to say what a pleasure I have had and how much I have enjoyed working with Josef, Brian and Donny. We have never had a better team and they do an excellent job on every project and keeping the grounds looking wonderful. = Volume 40 Number 12 December 2008 Lake Canyon Yacht Club Annual Meeting & Dinner Dance Join your fellow club members in our end-of-the-year Christmas gala held in the beautifully decorated Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club Ballroom.
