Tipton High School – Math Department FST Rationale The purpose of the Functions, Statistics and Trigonometry (FST) course is to reinforce the concepts introduced in Algebra II. Students passing this course will have the necessary skills to be successful in a college level algebra course. It may also be taken to improve the mathematics skills tested on the ACT or other post‐secondary entrance exams. Description FST is a one semester course taken for a weighted half a credit in mathematics from Tipton High School. This course is a continuation of topics in Algebra II including such topics as linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, trigonometry, systems, exponential and logarithmic functions. This course is designed specifically to prepare students for College Algebra. Prerequisite: Algebra II Objectives 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The student will perform basic arithmetic operations on all types of real and non‐real numbers without a calculator. The student will be able to solve and graph multiple step linear and nonlinear equations. The student will be able to graph various linear and nonlinear functions. The student will become proficient in the use of a graphing calculator. The student will be able to solve quadratic, trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential equations as well as find approximate solutions to equations without exact solutions. 6. The student will be able to solve problems involving sequences and series. Grading This course will follow the Tipton High School Grading Scale. Grade Structure Homework: 30% of the grade There will be a homework assignment at the end of every class. Late homework is docked 50% and rounded down. If it is more than one class period late the student will receive a zero. Quizzes: 10% of the grade Announced and unannounced “pop” quizzes will be given throughout each chapter to check for comprehension. Tests: 60% of the grade There will be a test given at the end of each chapter. Occasionally, there may be two tests given for some of the more difficult chapters. These two test grades may be averaged together so that they hold the weight of one test. Tipton High School – Math Department FST There will be a final at the end of each semester. Each of these will be cumulative for what we have done that semester or for that year. Each will make up approximately 10% of the final grade. Academic Honesty If a student is caught cheating on a quiz, a test, or a homework assignment he or she will receive a zero on that assignment. There will be no copying of any material in this classroom. Absences If a student is absent for any reason it is THE STUDENT’S responsibility to get the class work missed for that period and to turn it in on time. If you miss the day of a test, you will take the test the very next time you return to class. If a quiz or a test is given on the day you return to class, you are expected to complete the work. No credit will be given for unexcused absences. Classroom Rules 1. 2. 3. 4. Each student will be prepared for class. You will need a pencil, paper, textbook, and a calculator every class period. There will be no sleeping, eating or drinking in class. Each student will respect their peers and the teacher. Do not throw anything. Instructor: Karen Gentges Email: kgentges@tipton.k12.mo.us
