Catholic Central High School Course: Algebra 1A Department: Mathematics Length: 1 year Credit: 1 Prerequisite: High School Placement Test Textbook: Haenish; Algebra; AGS Publishing Course Goals and Objectives: Algebra 1A covers the same topics and concepts that are in the Algebra 1 course. The primary difference between the two courses is the level of difficulty of the problems. Algebra 1 problems are more difficult than those assigned in Algebra 1A. After successful completion of Algebra 1A students have the opportunity to select Geometry as the second year course instead of Geometry A. Course Description: First Semester: Operations with integers and rational numbers Order of Operations Evaluating Expressions Solving Linear Equations Graphing Linear Inequalities Application/Story Problems with Equations, Proportions and Percents, Exponent Properties and Polynomials Second Semester: Multiplying Polynomials Dividing Polynomials Factoring (binomials, trinomials) Factoring by Grouping Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring Operations with Rational Expressions (add, subtract, multiply, divide) Solving Rational Equations Solving Systems of Equations Graphing Systems of Inequalities Operations with Irrational Numbers (simplify, add/subtract, multiply, divide, and rationalize denominators) Quadratic Formula Solving Quadratic Equations Using Quadratic Formula Course Assignments: Homework is assigned nightly and checked the next day. Tests and quizzes are given periodically throughout the quarter. There is a comprehensive semester examination given at the end of each semester.
