Welcome to Sunrise Village At Sunrise Village we teach and live the student living model. Student Living represents an official model of governance within BYU-Idaho approved housing intended to assist students in their apartments to develop and live patterns of gospel-centered lives and to support them in their efforts to become stronger disciples of Jesus Christ. Additionally, Student Living teaches, encourages, and inspires students to take more responsibility for themselves, roommates, and neighbors in the apartment complex. Student Living sets the stage for a powerful culture to emerge within apartment life—a culture based on principles of love, shared responsibility, and mutual respect. Each semester we will select a guiding principle to teach at our opening meetings. The guiding principles of Student Living are: Love: Genuine love and concern for one another invites the spirit, fosters unity, and strengthens obedience in the apartment. Love thy Neighbor as Thyself. Love is the beginning, the middle, and the end of the pathway of discipleship. Love strengthens obedience. Serving others is a reflection of love. Love requires action. Shared responsibility: Roommates share responsibility for creating an atmosphere of righteous living and obedience in the apartment. Roommates get involved in the lives of one another and refer for help when needed. Am I My Brother’s Keeper? Roommates get involved. Roommates refer for help when needed. Roommates strengthen one another. Roommates are responsible for one another. Mutual respect: Roommates live the Golden Rule and value one another as sons and daughters of God. Mutual Respect is an Expression of Christ-like Living. Roommates value and respect one another. Respect for other shows reverence for God and His creations. Roommates live the golden rule. Respect leads to a happier apartment. Apartment Council: “Conflicts can be reduced if roommates hold weekly council meetings in addition to the weekly home evening lesson and activity. These meetings can provide training for future family and church councils as well as team building work experiences” (Kathleen Gee, “Roommates: Preparation for Marriage and Family,” BYU-Idaho Forum, July 2001). At the start of each semester we ask each apartment to meet in an apartment council. We hope this sets a pattern of regular communication and cooperation in the apartment. This is our opening meeting. Each semester we will focus on our selected Student Living Guiding Principle in addition to the following questions: What apartment actions will you perform to create regular opportunities for communication? o Answers may be: Apartment Prayer, Apartment Scripture Study, Apartment Council, Apartment Meals Living the Matthew 18 Principle: How can we apply this principle to roommate conflict? o Verse15: Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. What are some things to remember when approaching your roommates? Love, Kindness, and Understanding Spirit, willingness to forgive. Whatever you want, give it away. o Verse 16: But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. Who are excellent second witnesses? Who are bad second witnesses? Excellent: Manager, Relief Society President, Elders Quorum President, Home Evening Bad: Allies, Persons you blame and gossip with, sometimes the wrong roommate who is not interested in a resolution. o Verse 17: And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Who represents the church? Honor Office, Bishop, Housing Office, Police, and Student Health Center BYU-Idaho Apartment Living Standards BYU-Idaho Apartment Living Standards exist to preserve the integrity of the university and ensure the physical safety and spiritual well-being of each student. Whereas the BYU-Idaho Apartment Living Standards explicitly include the tenets of the Honor Code and the principles and guidelines found in For the Strength of Youth, the following sections are not intended to restate standards that students have already committed to uphold, but rather address unique conditions and standards specific to BYU-Idaho Approved Housing and single-student apartment life. Entertainment and Media: Landlords, managers, and students have a responsibility to filter and block material that is suggestive, vulgar, immoral, violent, illegal, or pornographic in any way. Internet access must specifically be filtered for Adult/Mature/Tasteless content, Gambling, Nudity, Pornography, Proxy/Anonymizer (used to bypass filters), P2P/File Sharing (used for illegal downloading), Sexuality and all other inappropriate content categories. Sunrise village provides a vacuum and bags. Trash cans, brooms, mops, are not provided. Kitchen: All-purpose cleaner, preferably a de-greaser for the stovetop and hood. A super-scrubby cleaning pad will help. Scour-Stick (pumice stone) for inside of oven. They are available at Wal-Mart in town. Bathroom: For the tub please have several magic erasers and a tough bathroom cleanser that is made for hard water and soap scum. I like Lime-a-way or products similar to it. Lime-a-way and a pumice stone works great on the interior of the toilet. Walls and Cabinetry: A magic eraser is the most effective tool for removing scuffs and grime from walls, cabinetry, and just about anything else. Please test an area before use, it can remove paint. Blinds: You will need to clean each individual slat of the blinds including the top and bottom. A microfiber cloth will help collect the dust. A damp cloth soaked in vinegar and water solution is most effective. Pluming and Clogged drains: Toilets: Each apartment is required to provide their own plunger. If your toilet is clogged and you do not have a plunger you will need to purchase one immediately. This is not something our maintenance team will attend to or provide for your use. If your plunger will not correct the problem we are happy to assist. If the lines need to be snaked, or a rooter rooter needs to be called an additional cost may be charged to you the resident. Never flush any feminine products including tampons and applicators down the toilet. Other Drains: We are happy to maintenance your other drains. Please submit a maintenance request online. How to use Fire Extinguisher: To use a fire extinguisher correctly, experts say that one should remember the acronym P.A.S.S. P: Pull the pin. A: Aim at the base of the fire. S: Squeeze the trigger. S: Sweep side to side. Fire extinguishers are serviced each year and should only be used in case of emergency. For a video tutorial please visit: http://youtu.be/lUojO1HvC8c Intramurals: If you would like to put together a team for intramural sports that consists of mostly Sunrise Village residents, Sunrise Village will sponsor your team. Internet: Century Link high speed wireless internet is available in each apartment. Please install current anti-virus software on your computer. Each apartment has a dedicated line of 7mbps. Each apartment also has its own password. This should provide you with enough speed to conduct your homework. If you are living in a modern apartment your router is located in the utility closet in the hallway. The classic apartment routers are located in the dining area. A simple power cycle can fix most connectivity issues if you detect a problem. We encourage each apartment to power cycle their modem/router each week. To do so please do the following steps: Unplug the router from the wall. Wait 30 seconds. Plug the router into the wall and wait three minutes before logging back in. If you are still unable to connect to the internet ask if anyone else in the apartment is having issues. If no one is able to connect please submit a maintenance request and use another apartment’s internet until we can get the problem corrected. Do not due the following or a $25 charge may occur: Do not at any time press the reset button. Your internet will immediately require a new password that can only be provided by management. Do not connect person routers, modems, etc… Additional items are unnecessary and prohibited. Do not move the Ethernet cords to different ports. It will damage the paint and you will be responsible to have it re-painted at $40/door. Garbage: We have three dumpsters located throughout the property. Please do not place your bags outside the dumpsters. Large items like furniture may also not be placed in the dumpster. Bikes/Scooters/Motorcycles: Scooters and Motorcycles are permitted to park in all hashed areas and do not require a permit. Bicycles are not permitted in the apartments. They do not require a permit and may be locked to the railings outside the apartment. Parking: Thirty-minute visitor parking is located in the front (south) and back (north) lots.
