Objective:Theobjectiveofthiscourseistointroduceyoutothechemistryoflifeandprovideabasisfor
furtherstudiesinbiologicalsciences.Thecoursematerialincludesthestructureandfunctionofbiological

notes.Eachlecturewillbeeasierforyoutounderstandifthesectionwearediscussingisreadpriortoclass.
Youwillberesponsibleforallannouncementsmadeinclass.Arriveontimeandavoidleavingearly.Turnoff
cellphones.Intheeventofweatherrelatedcancellationofclasses,theschedulewillpickupthesequenceof
lecturesasclassesresume.Ifwehavecoveredallmaterialforanexam,theexamwillbegivenonthefirstday

Review/Help Sessions: Each Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 5:50 PM in Rm C127. The first of these sessions
will be begin on August 14, and the last on November 20. These sessions will be used to review material, answer
questions, and go over the assigned problem sets.
Grading: Therewillbe4‐50minuteexamsgiventhroughoutthesemester. Exam IV will cover only the last
section of material. The four exams will be equally weighted.Make‐upexamswillcomefromanexambankand
maynotreflectthematerialemphasizedinlecture.AWRITTENEXCUSEisREQUIREDforallmakeupexams.
ExamswillNOTbegivenearly.Ifyoubelievetherehavebeengradingerrorsonyourexamsyouhaveone
weekfromthedatetheexamsarereturnedtocontactusforgradechanges.Nogradeswillbechangedafter
thisdate.ThefinalGradingScalefromFall2009wasasfollows:A93to100,A‐90to92,B+86to89,B83to
85,B‐80to82,C+76to79,C65to75,D50to64andFbelow50.Thefinalgradingscalemaydiffer.
Labor Day: September 2. Fall Break: November 1. Thanksgiving: November 25-29.

*The University shall operate a Friday class schedule on Tuesday, Dec. 3. This is done to equalize the class minutes
between MWF and Tu-Th classes and to provide an equal number of class meetings for courses which may meet
only once per week.
