READ THIS FIRST LATIN INTRODUCTION Although there are many very good reasons to include Latin in a child's education, pragmatic reasons like enriching vocabulary and deepening the understanding of English grammar among them, the best reason for introducing this language to a young mind is that it is intrinsically interesting. It is a language with familiar words from an ambitious society, but it is quite different from our language in structure. English depends primarily on word order, with endings or inflections taking a second place, for communicating thought. Latin communicates thoughts by adding endings to words, so the word order in a sentence is less important. There are quite a few word endings to learn, too. If you take a look at the back of a Wheelock's Latin text, you will discover that a noun has 10 different endings and that there are five families of nouns—50 different endings. There are four families of verbs and nearly 240 different endings for each family (240 x 4 = 960!). Yet children are mastering this material regularly. Yours will be no different. The study of this particular language with all its inflections trains a child's brain to observe, to compare, and then to generalize. It teaches them to pay attention to the details of a sentence to gain understanding. A fifth grade student of mine had read the fable of the crow and the urn in a Latin reader. A few weeks later he brought a large K’NEX sculpture to school and informed me that it was like Latin. The long and shapely pieces are the words and the tiny connecting pieces are the endings that hold the shape together. In the end, he had made a sculpture of a crow in flight. The work was intricate and careful, and it took him a long time to complete. He was rewarded with the likeness of a crow, but he communicated to me that he understood that all the endings and vocabulary also brought the reward of understanding a culture, and a way of thinking different from our own. The course we present with Latin for Children and then the Wheelock’s and Cambridge Latin Course are systematic and child friendly (very parent friendly, too). The work is interesting and the stories are compelling. It is important that you keep up with your child's mastery. Many of the assignments will ask you to work together. Keep in mind that mastering this language is difficult, but not impossible. If you find that the pace is too fast, slow down. Some children learn quickly and have a knack for language; some don't, but if you believe that it is the correct course for your child's education, persevere. The rewards are astonishing. The Roman greeting is a doorway into a society which existed long ago, a warrior race who built roads to last 80–100 years. These roads along with other buildings and artwork have become lasting memorials of the Romans’ brilliant engineering, usefully surviving not 80–100 years, but 2000 years! Let’s meet the Romans through their language. Although Latin is not spoken as a national tongue, it has been carefully preserved and studied for more than 2000 years. In the study of Latin you will not only learn what the Romans thought, but you will also learn how they thought. If you are persistent and diligent (learning any foreign language at times can be demanding, but press on), you could “meet” Caesar as he reported on his conquests. Cicero may persuade you in an argument. You could be entertained and deeply moved by the poetry of Virgil. Perhaps even Augustine himself will challenge and deepen your faith. “Valete.” Be strong. Be well. Prevail! HOOK: Allow the children to deconstruct either the puzzle or kit, paying attention to each piece. Comment on its shape, color, and where it had been originally placed. Then have them carefully reconstruct the puzzle. Explain that learning Latin is a lot like this. Say to the children: "Learning Latin L A T IN | 3 LATIN | Level 1 LESSON 1 will be a lot like working a puzzle. You will look carefully at words, examine each part of them, and then you will rebuild a thought with the words in sentences, paragraphs and stories." 2. Watch the Intro on Primer A DVD 1, and then watch Chapter 1. ALERT: At first it may be easier to watch the DVD for the pronunciation of the vocabulary, since you can see a person actually saying the sounds. Have the children be as precise as possible when saying a word, because they will then "feel" the word as well as see it and hear it, using three senses to "get it into their brains." The teacher's pace on the DVD and CD may seem fast. However, it is a good thing to learn right away to keep moving with the pronunciation in both chants and vocabulary. 3. Have the children read along in the Latin for Children Primer A, Chapter 1 page 1 as they watch the DVD. This will take about 40 minutes. Note: Salvete, pueri (poo-air-ee), if you are working with boys. Salvete, liberi (lee-bair-ee), if you are working with both boys and girls. How fast can they work the puzzle today? 1. Have the children review the vocabulary and chants with the DVD or CD and then try them on their own. 2. Review the answers on page 4 in Latin for Children Primer A, A. TRANSLATION. Say to the children, "When we translate a Latin verb, we say it from left to right, 1. a-mo, but we read it from right to left." Next point to the -o and say, "I", then to the am- and say, "love." Have the children do the same thing with the other verbs: 2 intro, I enter; 3. do, I give; 4. laboro, I work; and 9. narro, I tell. Check the spelling in B. CHANT. Say, "Spelling counts when learning any foreign language!" ALERT: Since Latin is a language that is read and interpreted with the endings on its words, the children must learn to recognize the ending first. At the moment, they will learn to see the -o, which is why we translate the first principle part, "amo, I love." An -o on a noun means something else. Nouns will be covered in subsequent chapters. For now, just learn the meaning of the nouns. 3. Have the children review the highlighted concepts on the Chapter 1 GRAMMAR pages. Then have them do C. GRAMMAR and D. DERIVATIVES together. Assist them if they are confused by what they have read. 4. Have the children learn the names of a verb's principle parts on page 3 of Primer A. Then read and complete the Chapter 1 DERIVATIVE WORKSHEET together. ASSIGNMENT Have the children continue to work in the Activity Book, Chapter 1. Remember, the ancient Romans learned all the forms from their parents and daily contact with other people, since it was their language. In other words, the Roman children grew up speaking it. Sometimes the chanting may feel artificial and get tedious, but it is a time-tested method of mastery. 2. Once the case names have been mastered, it is time to begin basic instruction in declension, the listing of nouns with all their endings. Say, "Do you remember how to conjugate a verb?" Wait for an answer. If you need to, remind the children about the 2nd principle part and about crossing off the -re to find its stem (Chapter 2, Conjugating a Verb) and then attaching the present tense endings. Say, "Nouns do something very similar. A noun's stem (other Latin grammars sometimes call this a base) is found in the genitive singular form. All the letters in this form in front of the genitive singular ending, -ae, are the noun's stem or base. Let's see if we can spy the stem of the nouns in this week's vocabulary. Let's look at the vocabulary page of Chapter 4. Highlight (or underline) each noun's stem." It is very important to direct the children to the genitive singular, even though the stem is clearly visible in the nominative singular of these nouns. Other declensions, which will be taught in the future, are not as regular as 1st-declension nouns. Recognizing the stem in the genitive singular is a very good habit to develop starting now. See if the children can think of any derivatives on their own; then, if necessary, have them look up those words to see if they are derivatives. Here are some guidelines for identifying an English derivative: 1) it must look similar in spelling to the Latin root word; and 2) it must have a related meaning to the suspected Latin root. As the editors updated the primers, they believed that this new quote from Cicero is more appropriate for these chapters. It is recommended that you use the written quote in Chapter 7, instead of the one appearing on the DVD. REVIEW 1. Ask, "What is a noun?" A noun is a word that names a person, place or thing. 2. Ask, "What are the five cases in Latin?" The five cases in Latin are nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, and ablative. If the children answer the question above with the cases out of order, it is OK. Then remind them that it is important to put them in the correct order, and help them do that. You might prompt them with the mnemonic Never Give Davus Any Apples. INSTRUCTION 1. Watch Chapter 6 on the DVD. 2. Have the children repeat the New Chant: Ludus—2nd-Declension Noun and the vocabulary with the DVD, with their books open to the Memory Page of Chapter 6. Have the children watch the DVD and recite this week's new chant and vocabulary with it. 2. Have the children recite the new chapter maxim, cum tacent, clamant. INSTRUCTION 1. Have the children open their books to the vocabulary list on the Memory Page of Chapter 6. Ask them to look at the nominative singulars of the nouns on this list. Ask, "With what two letters do most of these nominatives end?" -us, but three of them end with the letter -r. 2. Now say, "Look at the genitive singulars. With what letter do they end?" -i 3. Just as the genitive singular of every 1st-declension noun is -ae, every 2nd declension noun has the genitive singular, -i. A way to think about the two declensions is this. Nouns exist in families. Nominative is from the Latin root nomen, which means name. Genitive is from the Latin root genitum, which means having been born or begotten. If nouns have a genitive singular of -ae, they are begotten in one family. If nouns have a genitive singular of -i, they are begotten in another family. When we make friends, we usually learn the friend's first name and the friend's family name, e.g., John Smith. If John has a sister Jane, her last name is Smith, too, because they are in the same family. You can tell they are from the same family by their last name. So when we meet nouns in Latin, we meet their nominative (name) and their genitive (family name). L A T IN | 43 LATIN | Level 1 LESSON 27 4. Have the children find the stem of each noun in this vocabulary by looking at the letters in front of the -i of the genitive singulars. Have them underline or highlight them. Answer key: puer, pueri; vir, viri; germanus, germani; ludus, ludi; filius, filii; magister, magistri; discipulus, discipuli; famulus, famuli; servus, servi; amicus, amici Note: Notice that the stem of magister is magistr-. Have the children repeat the 2nd-Declension Neuter Noun Endings chant, the Case and Jobs chant, and the vocabulary with the DVD, with their books open to the Memory Page of Chapter 9. INSTRUCTION Say, "Neuter nouns are recognized by the genitive singular (-i) as being in the 2nd declension, just like masculine nouns in 2nd declension. The difference between the two is simply that neuter nouns have a nominative singular which ends in -um and masculine nouns, in -us (or -er, or -ir); and neuter nouns follow the Neuter Rule. What is the Neuter Rule?” For all neuter nouns, the nominative and accusative case forms are exactly the same, and the nominative and accusative plural forms always end in short –a. Say, "An interesting thing about Latin adjectives is that they usually follow the nouns they modify in Latin literature, unless they answer a question of size (How big?) or number (How many?). These adjectives will appear before the nouns they modify. In English, we say the good man. The adjective is in front of the noun. In Latin, you will often see this adjective behind the noun, e.g., vir bonus, literally meaning man good. Whether the adjective precedes or follows the noun it modifies, it is always translated before the noun. Let's look back at the adjectives in Chapter 11. Do any of these adjectives answer the questions about size or number?” magnus, magna, magnum and parvus, parva, parvum. 2. "You can then expect to see adjectives describing size or number in front of the nouns they modify, e.g., parvum oppidum (a small town) or magnus lupus (a large wolf). This may not always be the case, but it happens most of the time. How about in Chapter 12? Do any adjectives answer the questions of size or number?" There are none. Point out that the reading is on page 11 and new vocabulary and transalation helps are on page 12. Also point out that there are some easy questions to answer once they have read the story. 4. Have children say the words in the glossary to become familiar with them before they read the reading. Then have them look at the word for book, liber, libri, m. Ask, "In which declension is this word? How do you know?" It is in the 2nd declension because of its genitive singular, -i. ALERT: Since our program is now adding translation and reading, we will not be assigning the Chapter DERIVATIVE WORKSHEETS in the remaining lessons. However, they are beneficial, and you may include them if you wish as an enhancement or enrichment. Note: scribo, scribere, "... same personal endings..."-Personal ending is another name for present tense (or verb) ending, which is the name these endings are given in Latin for Children. Personal refers to the personal pronoun it represents. Therefore, you can expect to see -o, -s, -t, etc., on 3rd-conjugation verbs, and they will mean the same thing, I, you, he/she/it, etc. L AT IN | 119 LATIN | Level 1 LESSON 71 5. "Which person is that?" 1st person, singular 3. "What about the letter -t?” It means he, she, or it.. It is the 3rd person, singular. INSTRUCTION 1. Have children review the new vocabulary either with the DVD or without it. 2. Open Libellus de Historia, Latin History Reader A to Caput I. Read the first sentence out loud carefully, and have the children repeat after you. (Remember, it is not a big problem to do it "wrong.”) 3. Say, "Do you think we can read these Latin words? How do think this is translated?" Then give the children a few seconds to figure out the sentence. This first sentence is fairly straightforward since the word order is common in both English and in Latin. ALERT: The following simple rules will assist you with translating these and other sentences in Latin: 1. Read the entire sentence out loud in Latin. L AT IN | 122 LATIN | Level 1 LESSON 73 2. Look for familiar vocabulary and endings. 3. Many times the verb ending (Primer A, Chapter 2) will be the subject (SP) of the sentence. 4. If the verb ends with - t or -nt, there may be a noun in the nominative case that is the subject (SN). 5. If there is a noun and it is not in the nominative case (i.e., it has a nominative case ending), it will not be the subject (SN), even if it is the first word of the sentence or even if it begins with a capital letter. 4. Now ask, "Do you know which sentence pattern this is?" Pattern B. Pattern B is a pattern of "b"eing, etc. 5. “Now let's try sentence 2.” Read the sentence, and have the children repeat after you. Ask, "What kind of word is amat?" It is a verb. 6. Have the children translate the form. loves, he/she/it or he/she/it loves 7. Ask which subject pronoun agrees with Vitruvius Pollio. He, because Vitruvius Pollio was a man 8. Have the children look at the next two words, architecturam Graecam. Ask, "Could Graecam be the subject of this sentence? It begins with a capital letter." No. It ends with -am, which is the singular accusative case ending. ( It does not have a nominative case ending.) 9. The accusative case will be studied further in chapter 20. Architecturam Graecam is the direct object (DO) of amat. Ask the children to translate the sentence. He loves Greek architecture. 10. Ask, "Where is the subject (SN or SP)? It is in the end of the verb, -t. 11. Allow the children to complete the next two sentences on their own. Be ready to assist them. Abl/P/F I am baptizing with water, but he will baptize with fire. How can a noun be an adverb? It can't in English, can it? It can in Latin. In fact, any noun can be used as an adverb. In Latin the ablative case often functions without a preposition when it is used to answer the questions, "how?" and "when?" These are two questions an adverb answers about a verb. My students laugh, when I tell them the literal translation for aquā above could be "waterly" which is understood better with a preposition like "by" or "with". This use of the ablative is called the "ablative of means". To turn nouns into adverbs is not too strange, though, because in English we turn nouns regarding time into adverbs: hour--hourly, day--daily, time--timely, etc. L AT IN | 196 LATIN | Level 1 LESSON 113 Responde Latine 1. There is no new vocabulary or a quiz at the end of this week, but there is a new reading in Libellus de Historia. Have children work carefully through the pages from memory first, but then allow them to look up anything they don't quite remember. Then spend a little time reviewing that particular lesson. 1. Have children watch Chapter 26 on the DVD. 2. Have children work on the first page of Chapter 26 in Primer A. HOOK: Since this is a review to assist in the mastery of these prepositions, have children play a mimed quickness game. Say circa, and have the children run around or circle their chairs. Say iuxta, and have the children stand next to their chairs or each other. Set this mime play up with each preposition so that the children relate a specific position or movement to a specific preposition. Since some of the prepositions essentially mean the same thing, have the children offer suggestions for a shape or formation. Keep a couple of standard rules of play in mind: 1. Look where you are going. 2. Keep your hands to yourself (unless the position has a hands-on placement). 3. Listen carefully to the teacher, because the teacher is always right. 4. Do not get too accustomed to it, but allow the pattern to train the children's eyes to see a word to the end.
