8th Grade Social Studies Summer Reading
Choose two of the following books.
Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Beals
The Rifle by Gary Paulsen
The Cay by Theodore Taylor
The first week of SRC you will be required to take a test over one
of your choices. For your second choice complete the following
assignment:
Pretend you are the main character and write a journal with ten
entries. Each entry should express the character’s feelings
throughout the book. Please cite the chapter for each journal entry.
Each entry should be at least six to seven sentences. You may use
a notebook or loose leaf paper. This will be due the first Friday of
the school year. ( I do consider the “rifle” the main character in
that book.)

An American Plague by Jim Murphy
Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch
The first week of SRC you will be required to take a test over
one of these books.
You must also read any two chapters from A Young People’s
History of the United States by Howard Zinn. (please choose only
chapters from part 1 which is basically chapters from Columbus to
the Spanish American war) Once you have read your two
chapters write a 14 font double spaced one page summary on one
of the chapters. For the other chapter you may do one of the
following:
Create a poster of the main events in the chapter.
Create a poem or song describing the key events or a key
character in the chapter.
