Beowulf By: Megan Klish The mead hall was where everyone gets Together and drinks wine and eats. (Lines 710) Grendel is a powerful monster that lives in the dark. (Lines 1-3) Grendel was born of Cain. God punished Cain after the death of Abel, ”those monsters Born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God, Punished forever for the crime of Abel’s death.” (Lines 20-23). His offspring was banished be God. Herot was a place that made everyone happy until Grendel came along. “Till the monster stirred, that demon, that fiend, Grendel, who haunted the moors, the wild Marshes, and made his home in a hell Not hell but earth.” (Lines 16-19) He destroyed Herot. Beowulf a hero heard what was going on in the town He now has his men and they go to the king to help him. (Lines116-118) During one night Grendel went to the mead hall and destroyed it. “Snatched up thirty men, smashed them unknowing in their beds, and ran out with their bodies, the blood dripping behind him, back to his lair, delighted with his night’s slaughter.” (Lines 37-40) That night everyone was surprised that Grendel showed up in the mead hall and killed a lot of men. When Beowulf was ready to choose the men’s he wants to bring, he chooses the good ones. “Chose the mightiest men he could find, the bravest and best of the Geats, fourteen in all, and led them down to their boat.” (Lines 120-121) He trusted his men and knew what him and his men were going to do. Hrothgar was really upset about loosing all of his men and knew he had to do something quickly before it got out of hand. He wanted a hero that could save him and his people from the monster. (Lines 82-90) King Hrothgar warned Beowulf about Grendel and what he has done. “And then, in the morning, this mead-hall glittering with new light would be drenched with blood, the benches Stained red, the floors, all wet from that fiend’s” (Lines 218-220) He tells Beowulf about Grendel and what he has done in the past. Grendel was ready to kill; Beowulf and his men were already there. Grendel entered the Herot and saw all of Beowulf’s men there. He was delighted to see how many of the men he was going to kill by morning. (Lines 409-415) While everyone was in the Herot, Unferth came behind him and tried to insult him about a race with Brecca. “Boastful fool who fought a swimming match with Brecca, both of you daring and young and proud, exploring the deepest seas, risking your lives for no reason but the danger.” (Lines 240-244) He was trying to make Beowulf look weak. Beowulf wanted to defeat Grendel. He wanted to focus on winning because he wanted to keep his people safe. (Lines 365-370) Beowulf got a hold of Grendel and wanted to kill him. “But his power had gone. He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke.” (Lines 496-499) Beowulf killed him and ripped his arm off of him and found his weakness and used it on him. Grendel had the opportunity to escape and did. “Grendel escaped, but wounded as he was could flee to his den, his miserable hole at the bottom of the marsh, only to die, to wait for the end of all his days. (Lines 500504) Grendel escaped after Beowulf ripped off his arm. Beowulf has done his duty and finished the work that he had to do when he came to Denmark. He was called hero after he killed Grendel. (Lines 559500) The lake Grendel went into after Beowulf ripped his arm off was boiling from his evil and his veins. The water was red from the blood of his arm dripping down from his arm. (Lines 528-529) Grendel’s mother wanted to hurt Beowulf. “Tried to work her fingers through the tight ring-woven mail on his breast, but tore and scratched in vain, Then she carried him, armor and sword and all to her home.” (Lines 580-583) She took Beowulf to her home to hurt. The Dragon is mad because someone stole his jeweled cup from his collection of gold. (Lines Summary before section 14) When Beowulf finally had a chance to kill the Dragon, when he stuck the sword in him the sword broke. “Drew blood, but cracked and failed him before it went deep enough, helped him less than he needed.” (Lines 728-730) Since the sword is broke the Dragon has a better chance in killing Beowulf. Grendel’s mother has a spell on herself that she cannot be killed or wounded with any weapons or blades. Now it’s hard for Beowulf to kill her. (Lines 598-601)
