CALMAT University BUS 523 Strategic Management SYLLABUS Saturday 3:00-5:30PM Sep 13; Oct 4, 25; Nov 1, 15; and Dec 6, 13, 20, 2013 Credits units: 3 INSTRUCTOR: Dr. George Guim georgeguim@aol.com (415) 963-2956 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Course discusses the basic concepts and tools for strategic management. The course focuses on the analysis, design, and implementation of competitive strategies from the perspective of a business unit and of a corporation as a whole, and from a domestic and global perspectives. The course also covers ethical and social responsibility issues in strategic management. Practical applications include a project that uses field observations of a local business store to do an analysis using the conceptual framework discussed in class. TEXTBOOK: Essentials of Strategic Management (5th ed.) by Hunger and Wheelen. Prentice Hall 978-81203-4861-5. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Do environmental scanning, industry analysis, and internal (organizational) scanning. 2. Formulate strategies using situational (SWOT) analysis from corporate and functional perspectives. 3. Design corporate strategies under domestic and global situations, including growth and diversification strategies. 4. Understand ethical and social responsibility issues in relation to employees, management, customers, shareholders, overseers, and the community at large. 5. Develop strategies to address organizational structure, cultural change, and leadership for the implementation, and management of chosen strategies. INSTRUCTIONAL FORMAT: 1. Regular lectures on textbook chapters. 2. Discussion of written reports (case study) 3. In-class video viewing. 4. In-class final exam. 1 STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY. Students must: 1. Read the assigned textbook chapters BEFORE coming to class. 2. Watch the assigned videos, and be prepared to discuss them in class. 3. Be prepared to do final exams write a self-reflection. 4. Complete field research work on a chosen topic. 5. Professionally present and discuss (using Power Point) case study in class. EVALUATION METHODS: Points 1 2 3 4 Attendance Class Participation Case Study: Paper/ Presentation Final Exam 100 100 100 Total 400 100 COURSE GRADING SCALE: The sum of all points obtained from attendance, participation, the case study, and final exam will be computed as percent of total (400 points) and assigned a letter grade as follows: B+ = 86-90 C+ = 71-75 D+ = 56-60 A = 96-100 B = 81-85 C = 66-70 D = 51-55 F = 0-45 ABCD- = 91-95 = 76-80 = 61-65 = 46-50 ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classes and participate actively in every class session. At a minimum, students must attend 80% of class time, or s/he may not receive a passing grade for the course. Should a student have extenuating circumstances, s/he should contact the instructor as soon as possible and discuss the circumstances.
